8 Biggest Reveals In The Epic New Trailer For THOR: RAGNAROK
Marvel surprised us all today with the release of the incredible first teaser trailer for Thor: Ragnarok, but what exactly does it tell us about the movie? Here are the eight biggest reveals...
The debut of the new trailer for Thor: Ragnarok came completely out of nowhere, but James Gunn wasn't lying when he said it was one of Marvel's best. It's been clear from the second the movie's logo was revealed that it would be different to any other release to come from the studio, while the first official images pointed to an aesthetic which was completely unique for a superhero adaptation.
That's something this teaser made clear, but it happens to be packed full of huge plot spoilers too. It may only provide a very brief look at what's to come, though Marvel has revealed a lot here.
Is that a good thing or bad thing? Well, it's not like the studio has spelled out the entire plot and there's more than enough here to leave us with even more big questions. What you'll find below, though, is an in-depth look at the biggest reveals and what they mean for the threequel along with all the ways these set up both Thor's future and what's to come in the Marvel Cinematic Universe...
8. Hela Vs. The Valkyries
We've been wondering for a while now why Valkyrie would be wasting her time working for someone like The Grandmaster, but this teaser for Thor: Ragnarok makes it clear that an event in the past may have been what led her there. In what appears to be a flashback, we see Hela battling The Valkyries in a clash which likely ends with the villain being banished to Hel and them wiped out after they were sent after her at Odin's behest.
This Valkyrie going into hiding or punishing herself for that makes sense then, as does why she may be reluctant to help the God of Thunder when he wids up in that gladiatorial arena. Once she learns Hela is loose, though, it could be that we'll get a redemption story of sorts for the former hero if she joins Thor as he looks to retake Asgard from the villain.
7. Whose Side Is Loki On?
Set photos have confirmed that Loki will join Thor on Earth when he seeks out Doctor Strange for help in finding Odin, and that obviously means the God of Thunder is going to learn the truth about who is sitting on Asgard's throne. When that will take place in the movie is hard to say and this trailer only serves to complicate matters.
However, we do see the God of Mischief seemingly battling Asgardians alongside Hela's minions, while you may have also noticed him watching Thor battle The Hulk in The Grandmaster's arena. It's possible of course that he's just biding his time until he can free his brother, but equally likely that he's allied himself with Hela as he realises that this is one battle the now unworthy God of Thunder can't win. Little does he know, eh?
6. Skurge Strikes
In a blink and you'll miss it moment, Skurge can be seen here wielding a weapon which definitely looks like it hails from Earth. While he's best known for using an axe, Marvel may have shown us a moment which drops a pretty major spoiler for what's to come in Thor: Ragnarok. Now, before you get too upset about this apparent change to the source material, bear in mind that the character has frequently used human weaponry in the comic books and that they played a role in one key moment of his history in particular.
Eventually turning on Hela, he saves Thor's life and uses two rifles to hold off her forces before eventually being overrun and killed by them. It could be that we're getting a glimpse of this here, though it's also possible that Taika Waititi is just paying homage to his comic book roots with this specific choice of weapon.
5. Trapped In Hel
We catch only what appears to be a handful of glimpses of Hel in this Thor: Ragnarok trailer, but the one which kicks off the trailer may very well be the most interesting. It looks like the Unworthy Thor escapes Sakaar but winds up here and the fact he's in chains obviously isn't good. However, this fiery take on Hela's home is interesting for a whole other reason and that's because concept art shown at Comic-Con last year revealed that Surtur will be in the movie.
I'd be willing to bet that the God of Thunder has been left here to be devoured or destroyed by that fan-favourite villain, but what will follow is no doubt going to be an epic battle! Either way, Hel is going to be different to any location we've seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so here's hoping it plays a big role here.
4. Asgard In Ruins
After dealing with Thor, Hela clearly sets her sights on the rest of Asgard and it appears as if we can expect her unleashed powers to pretty much wipe out the God of Thunder's home. That signals her being one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most powerful villains to date and could be something which sets the stage for Avengers: Infinity War.
After all, speculation points to Thanos coming to Asgard and aligning himself with Hela (the MCU's version of Death) and it will be a lot easier to do so if she still controls this realm once the movie comes to a close. After all, there's nothing to say that Thor can't stop her plan but fail in finishing her off for good, especially if Thor: Ragnarok leads almost directly into that highly anticipated ensemble. Whatever the answer may be, things look bleak for Asgard!
3. Heimdall On The Run
As I mentioned, it seems at least some survive this attack and among them is Idris Elba's Heimdall. He was more than likely able to escape due to standing guard on the Rainbow Bridge, but it doesn't look like he's faring too well as he's far from his normal composed self. He is at least kicking ass, something which will hopefully mean he's not going to meet his maker anytime soon despite that vision Thor had in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Alas, if fan theories are accurate in regards to him being the Soul Gem, it could be that the attack from Thanos is where we'll see him die, something which would make sense and gives Thor a compelling reason to join the battle against the Mad Titan in Avengers: Infinity War outside of the fact that he's a member of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
2. Mjolnir Destroyed
We've heard about this scene, but seeing it is something else entirely! It's been made clear that Mjolnir is one of the most powerful weapons in existence, so the fact Hela is able to stop the hammer in its tracks and then detroy it almost effortlessly make it clear immediately that she's someone to be feared! It's this which is obviously going to lead to Thor being banished to Sakaar, and while we know he'll be getting some new swords while there, what could be next for the hero?
Well, Mjolnir has been detroyed and restored a fair few times in the comic books, but unless Odin is restored to power by the time all is said and done (and I don't think that will be the case), I think we may very well head into Avengers: Infinity War seeing Thor without Mjolnir. Here's hoping he gets it back in time for Captain America to wield it, though!
1. Hulk Smash
In arguably the trailer's coolest moment, we get to see The Incredible Hulk unleashed on Thor much to the God of Thunder's delight. However, things quickly go wrong when the Jade Giant takes aim at his fellow Avenger, but it's clear that there's some stuff missing between the two scenes in this sneak peek. What happens next is anyone's guess, but there may be a very good reason why The Hulk feels like he has to battle Thor.
Something which is also sure to delight fans is the fact Thor is finally wearing his helmet, something which has been missing pretty much from the first few minutes of Thor way back in 2011! It looks like it has a practical use here and is hopefully a permanent addition to the hero's wardrobe. You also have to wonder how Loki feels about seeing him again...
