THUNDERBOLTS*: First Set Video May Have Greater Significance Than It Initially Appears - Possible SPOILERS

Yesterday, Thunderbolts* star Florence Pugh shared a lengthy video from the set of the Marvel Studios movie, but a new rumour suggests what we see in the background could be more important than realised.

Thunderbolts* star Florence Pugh took to social media yesterday to share a video from the set of the long-delayed Marvel Studios movie.

In that, the Black Widow and Hawkeye star showed us a set which looked a little prison-like. Scooper Daniel Richtman has now chimed in, claiming that the cast is filming in the vault where the Thunderbolts discover The Sentry.

It's previously been reported that the Golden Guardian is being kept in captivity, though we can't help but wonder what that means for his origin story in the MCU and, even more interestingly, what Valentina Allegra de Fontaine intends to do with him.

Richtman also claims that Bucky Barnes won't be part of the team at the beginning of the movie, tying into recent reports that Sebastian Stan may only have a supporting role in Thunderbolts*.

Of course, that wasn't the only big reveal in Pugh's set video. As we first reported last night, Thunderbolts is now titled Thunderbolts*, and we don't anticipate learning about the significance of the asterisk until the trailer drops.

It's feasible, for example, that the movie will come with a disclaimer that not all of these characters will make it out alive. Given the popularity of many of them, Marvel Studios runs the risk of upsetting a heap of fans if this is where we say goodbye to the likes of Bucky and Red Guardian.

Should they have instead introduced a comic-accurate team - with characters like Songbird and Mach IV - and killed most of 'em, Suicide Squad-style? It's one alternative, but there's so much we don't know about Thunderbolts*, that it would be wrong to make any sweeping judgments.

Something we can say is that all signs point to the stakes being incredibly high in the movie. Still, what, if any, impact it will have on the wider Multiverse Saga is unlikely to be revealed until we sit down in theaters to watch this team's big screen debut next year.

Thunderbolts*' confirmed cast members include Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Florence Pugh as Yelena Boleva, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster.

Recently, Geraldine Viswanathan replaced Ayo Edebiri in an undisclosed role, while Lewis Pullman has taken over as The Sentry following Steve Yeun's shock departure from the movie. Both he and Edebiri are said to have left due to scheduling issues.

Written by Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin, and Joanna Calo, and directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* is currently set to be released in theaters on May 2, 2025.

Well hopefully it's better than Suicide Squad

@Battinson - The second SS movie wasn't that bad...it's rewatchable...the first was awful though.

@Battinson - it’ll definitely be better than the Suicide Squad. Marvels using the 2/3’s of The Flash’s plot and they’ll just improve on it.

I don’t think anyone will really care if any of these characters die. Only Winter Soldier but he’s been around for so long it’s probably time. People certainly don’t care about Red Guardian like this article implies lol.

@JFerguson - nobody cares. I had no emotional attachment to any of the characters in Heat going in. Coming out its my favorite movie of all time.

I think if there are Thunderbolts characters dying, there's a major chance one of them will be Red Guardian. He's the father figure for Yelena and since her character seems to be the lead of the film it will add an emotional resonance to her story. Of course, I wouldn't mind sacrificing Taskmaster, the character was poorly serviced in Black Widow, and I don't the writers of that film did anything to endear her to the audience.

@String - I don’t think the answer is killing her off though

You could still develop Taskmaster and maybe have someone like Bucky whose been brainwashed and used a weapon help her to deal with her past & trauma like others have him.

Yeah. I can only imagine the thousands upon thousands of MCU fans that will need to be talked off the ledge in the event of the iconic and legendary Red Guardian's death. 🫤

"Richtman also claims that Bucky Barnes won't be part of the team at the beginning of the movie"

I'm glad to read that, because if I'm to believe what this scooper said weeks ago about Bucky not being in the movie much this is the better explanation (the other one being that he dies)

Nobody cares about the movie.
The asterisk means that the movie has a different title than Thunderbolts or at least a subtitle.

Makes sense…

I already felt we would have Val send the team on a mission to retrieve a “package” only for them to go there and find out it’s this person who maybe mentally unstable and hold a great yet dark power within.

Anyway , looking forward to the film!’

Then I expect the actual line in the movie to be "what are we, some kind of thunderbolts asterisk?"

Set this all at night, make it gritty. Espionage, breakouts, fighting, on the run, mayhem, and leave out the bright colors and daytime shots and levity for the most part.

I only really care about 2 characters here.

1) Bucky Winter Soldier hopefully after Secret Wars Captain America. Do NOT kill him!

2) Sentry. He could a great MCU character for years. Don't make him a sh!tty one and done MCU villain like Malekith, Whiplash, Gorr, etc, etc.

@DocSpock - I love the comic book version of Sentry, when he was part of The Dark Avengers and World War Hulk but look what they've done to him now.

I hope this isn't Disney Marvels plans for the character.

@marvel72 -

Yeah. I hope Marvel doesn't try to figure out having Sentry check boxes & make him a gay pedo left-handed either antifa terrorist or hard right KKK like character.

@marvel72 - a kind of Shazam family? I don't have any connection to him in the comics, so I honestly wouldn't mind that change.

The Red Guardian can die, the Black Widow movie made that character pointless by wasting what should have been the Russian version of Captain America and turned him into a joke.

As for Bucky a lot of fans will miss him if he goes, I miss the Bucky from The Winter Soldier and Civil War but what Bucky became during The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, well I wouldn't miss that take on the character.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/28/2024, 6:04 PM
@marvel72 - the character he became in FATWS is a character that shouldn't appear anymore. And I don't mean that in a bad way. They left him in a place where he reconciled his past and was ready to retire

SummersEssex - 3/28/2024, 6:03 PM
I don't see them making this like Suicide Squad by killing off a bunch of them.

Make Sentry a One and Done. He serves no purpose beyond this film.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/28/2024, 6:06 PM
Well, neither of those things come as a surprise. Feels like they might as well be well-educated guesses. Not the first time speculation got it right.

Anyway, I'm not too bothered about the title. Doubt it's gonna be a disclaimer for characters dying though, as it's about time Marvel starts raising such stakes.

Not having Zemo in this is a huge missed opportunity. He was great in The Falcon and Winter Soldier, best part of the show. He’s played really well by the actor and there’s a lot of potential there for the character. Really he’s the only one I would’ve been excited to see in this.
