Transformers has not had a great relationship when it comes to female characters. More specifically, director Michael Bay has been met with endless criticism regarding feminine visuals. Transformers: The Last Knight attempted to fix the problem within the franchise with Isabela Moner’s young heroine, but the individual’s purpose in the film lacked logic and purpose.
In the upcoming Transformers spinoff, Bumblebee, Paramount Pictures and Hasbro have set their sights on fixing this problem. While the studio was breaking ground on where the series could go next, none other than Steven Spielberg introduced the concept for a fearless female lead paired with the loveable Autobot.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura talked about Spielberg's involvement, as well as Hailee Steinfeld's performance in the film.
Steven had always had an idea that a young girl and Bumblebee would be a great combination, so we headed in that direction. I’m just amazed at how talented she is. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an actor never miss a beat for the entire shoot. It was crazy. We ended up ahead of schedule because she was just so on it all the time.
Though Shia LaBeouf did a fantastic job interacting with the robots in disguise, Wahlberg left something to be desired. From the producer's excitement it seems that Steinfeld may even top both veteran actors. Director Travis Knight, fans are rooting for you to make this one work.
