RICK AND MORTY Will Fulfil 70-Episode Order From Adult Swim Despite Ongoing Justin Roiland Controversies

We have another update on Rick and Morty's future, specifically in regards to whether the 70-episode order from Adult Swim will be fulfilled in its entirety following co-creator Justin Roiland's ousting.

Earlier this week, an exposé shed new light on Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland's alleged misconduct, with a number of insiders making it clear his involvement with the Adult Swim series has been minimal at best for several years.

Having had little in the way of creative input, the show will only really lose his voice, though there's no denying that the void he leaves will be significant. Along with voicing Rick and Morty, Roiland plays a number of fan-favourite supporting characters in the series, and many fans are now worried about what his ousting means for the show's future.

While it's previously been reported that Rick and Morty will continue with Roiland's roles recast, The Wrap (via SFFGazette.com) has confirmed the show will fulfil its 70-episode order despite Adult Swim very publicly cutting ties with the co-creator. Considering the fact there are still 40 episodes left to produce in that deal, we're sure you'll all be happy to learn the series is here to stay.

In fact, based on what we've heard about the way Roiland disrupted his fellow creatives behind the scenes - including bringing an adult film star to workRick and Morty is likely to benefit greatly from his continued absence.

The trade reiterates that his roles will be recast, though there's currently no word on who will be faced with the challenge of filling his shoes. There are a number of surprisingly great impersonators on social media, but there's every chance co-creator Dan Harmon will decide to take the title duo down a slightly different route.

Work is continuing on the show's seventh season, anyway, and Scott Marder is expected to remain showrunner. Roiland and Harmon served in that capacity for the first two years before their falling out, while Mike McMahan then took over for the third and fourth seasons.

There's no official word on when Rick and Morty will return, though we do anticipate it being sometime in 2023.

I am in no way supporting Roiland, but I’ll likely be bowing out at this point.

@mountainman - I want to see where it goes. I always bet on the [frick]ing longshits.

@mountainman - If they can keep the voices close I'll be okay with it. But Rick's voice is just classic. It's like Homer Simpson, you can't replace that voice actor because even if it's very close, it won't be the same. I'm afraid that's the case with Rick.

@mountainman - i bet if they got someone close and you were ignorant of the whole thing where he is gone you wouldn't even notice. the show will be fine especially since he had no creative input whatsoever the last few years. relax dude.

@supermanrex - Like when I realized Cleveland’s voice was replaced on Family Guy. New guy sounds exactly like the original.

They already paid for them, plus the hundreds of millions from merch won't stop the train. They should get Christopher Lloyd lol

@bobevanz - that's a dope idea! Doc being the main inspiration behind Rick is bringing it full circle.

Dee Bradley Baker said it best when he said that there's a HUGE difference between impersonation and acting. Actors need to constantly riff and improvise due to the needs of the director and impersonators are usually just doing lines from the show.

this will hurt the show. they should have replaced the voices in secret. if people notice in the credits it would be minimized. but now after making a big show of it people already have a taste of meh about this show

@grif - what should they have done though?
Quietly replace the voices while his lawsuit is out there?
Have fans get the wrong message and thinking the show kept employing Roiland?

They're doing the only possible thing: distance themselves from Roiland to protect their image and potentially save the show from potential disaster.

I’ll still watch. Yeah Roland might be a piece of shit but a lot of people worked hard on this series!

@EZBeast - exactly, dude did the voices and was a creative force. The writing room is more than just Roiland though.

1.) If you've followed Dan Harmon (who isn't without his demons either) you'll know the writing is 100% his. It's right down his imagination and humor.
The writing certainly won't change, surely Roiland's improvisations will be missing but they can fake that or at least try to replicate it if not cutting it out altogether.

2.) hundreds of talented voice actors have perfected the art of voice imiatation. Fans didn't even realize that Giselle Loren replaced Sarah Michelle Gellar in the Buffy Video Games. Roiland has been replicated by fans on YT, I'm sure someone like Billy West can do the job. There are many, like @dracula posted yesterday.

3.) Roiland, if not an abuser, is a confirmed creep. His messages to these girls made my skin crawl. It's good that he's gone and is hopefully seeking help to rebuild his life.
However his BS can't be the reasons hundreds of people are losing their jobs.
He might be the voice of R&M but AdultSwim and Harmon owe it to their employees to at least try and salvage this mess.
Jobs are on the line and that's not to be taken lightly.

also I might add: Dan Harmon has had his own scandals in the past and made ammends. He treated Megan Gantz (known as a writer from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia", hosting the Glenn/Charly/Rob podcast and a co-creator for "Mythic Quest") to verbal and mental abuse after being turned down by her when she was working on "Community".
He did some truly abhorrent stuff both as a boss and as a human being and rightfully got shunned.
HOWEVER he came back from that, he apologized in private, sought help and has been trying to make it right by openly talking about this and taking responsibility.
I'm sure these two will never look at each other with anything but disgust and guilt but it's a story about trying to be better.
Roiland can do the same (even if the abuse allegations are worse).

IMO the show should stay on until its ratings dwindle.
Only fair to the crew.

Well, of COURSE they will. People need money. And I doubt that most people who are aware of the behind the scenes issues (which may be a small percentage of the viewers) are going to stop watching it.

@LSHF - Major cast members from live action movies and shows have been replaced with little difference to the ratings. This is just a voice (for the most part). Why wouldn't they keep going?

Honestly (and maybe a bit cynically, considering the circumstances), the show has gotten a bit stale. I still watch it, and there are still some great episodes, but I've felt for at least a season or two that they were running out of steam a bit. Maybe this is an opportunity to shake things up, creatively.

They've opened the "central finite curve" bit already, hinting at a multiverse where Rick is no longer the smartest being. Maybe we do some universe hopping and/or an episode where another smart being uses Rick's voice as some sort of identifier/security break, and he has to move universes and change his voice. But he tests the tech on Morty first, to make sure it works.

They could call the villain something like Voice Crack, and just make him an alien teenage genius who thinks Rick is cool and wants to use his tech. So the meta joke would be that a Rick mega-fan got too obsessive, and Rick has to literally change a defining feature of both his and Morty's to defeat him.

Idk, seems like something that would fit the show's sense of humor, and it would give a canonical narrative reason as to why their voices would change.

I guess the alternative is get an impressionist, but that seems a bit shallow.

The show has had a huge dip in quality ever since they hired a bunch of chicks to write it.

So what's the problem with bringing an adult film star to work? Unless they didn't make any fuzz about it or something? I mean the guy who wrote this article constantly sexualizes women. Just look at 4 out of 5 of his wrestling articles or all the cosplay he used to post here.

70 episodes. God damn. Just let it end. 6 seasons is enough.
