Well i have to admit to being a bit apprehensive at the prospect of a guy whose only previous writing credit is for a childrens movie writing the script for Preacher! But Mendes has said that he wouldnt even think about tackling the project until he saw the best script possible. So lets hope Mr August is the man to get the ball rolling on pre production.

For those of you unfamiliar with this masterpiece of a comic, its about a down and out Preacher named Jesse Custer possessed by a demon/angel hybrid who sets off accross America to find God and beat some answers out of him! Hes joined by Cassidy, a hard drinking Irish vampire and his old flame, the slightly psychotic Tulip O'Hara. Along the way ther progress his hindered by the unstoppable Saint of Killers and Herr Starr, the head of a mysterious organisation known as The Grail.

I did an earlier article on this and im sure ill be doing another as more information is released but for now here are my cast pics for the main characters:

I think Gerard Butler (300) would make a good Jesse Custer. Not only has he got the look, hes great at playing this type of cool as a cucumber hardman. The only issue might be the Texan accent..but i think hes talented enough to make it covincing.

Cassidys overall look and character is apparently based on legendary Pouges frontman Shane McGowan..but i think all will agree casting him is out of the question, so i reckon the next best thing is Robert Carlyle

For Tulip my first thought was Naomi Watts..but then i though about Battlestar Galacticas Starbuck, who pretty much is Tulip! So type casting be damned! I give you Katee Sackoff

Obviously he would never do it..but Clint Eastwood IS the Saint of Killers

Herr Star is possibly one of the most vile, perverted, sadistic characters in the comic universe...I think Ralph Fiennes would do a great job!

Thats your lot for now. Im sure ill have another article soon casting the mighty Arseface and the rest of the supporting characters.

Pretty decent casting. I'm still curious how they intend to compact Preacher's entire run into a 2 hour movie? I'm still in favour of a HBO series produced.

I dont think they would be silly enough to attempt that, i reckon the first movie will be gone to texas/until the end of the world

Hey ror, don't you think that Gerard Butler is too buff to play Jeese Custer?

If Clint Eastwood did the saint of killers, this movie would rule, no matter what.

I'm more curious about how in hell they intend to tackle all the stuff in Preacher without getting an NC17 rating and millions of religious fanatics trying to boycott it. I mean just the concept of a demon and an angel having sex, let alone a child will upset most of the creationist defenders.

Not sure if Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is the way to go to do that, but I will see this movie no matter what.

Yeah Butler would deffo have to lose some muscle mass alright..but sure an actor can pretty much reshape his whole body these days with the right discipline...look at Christian Bale. Another actor i thought of was Guy Pierce, what u think?

I dont think Sam Mendes is the type of director to shy away from the censor baiting elements of the comic..in fact he would probably relish the idea of putting a few noses out of joint! Also he proved he can make a very good, faithful comic adaptation with Road To Perdition. Im pretty sure this movie will have a lot of complaints but that was always the intention of the comic i spose.

I know and thats just the whole point of Preacher, I just think that everyone involved must grow some really big balls, since they will have to face a lot of controversy.

Ror, do you know what studio is contemplating on doing this? hopefully it's a small studio, since they are the ones that usually take the big risks, if it's Paramount, WB, Fox, etc. then they will have to grow even bigger balls to convince the studios to let the story be.

i actually havnt a clue! ill have to see if i can find that out. The good thing is that with Watchmen being R rated, it will be easier to do the same for Preacher...i realise that they are in different leagues with the adult content but its a start anyway.

They will indeed need elaphantitis balls to make this faithful to the comic! Any movie that makes God out to be a bit of a bastard is never going to sit well with certain folks!

lol, I can picture the christian family going to the movies on a saturday afternoon. Let's see... this one looks nice... Preacher must be a lovely movie dealing with the hardships a man must go to become a preacher, let's see this, mmm wonder why it's R/NC-17 rated?

I´m guessing they'd stand 5 minutes of the whole movie (probably wouldn't get past the opening credits) before getting a barrel of gasoline and setting the whole theater on fire.

haha, yeah i reckon they wont watch past Jesse calling God a mother[frick]er at any rate!

You know what? i bet when this movie does come out people will be comparing it to Dogma..because they are very similar in some ways and Kevin Smith said he only made Dogma because he couldnt make Preacher! Shame that was a load of crap

lol, how about using the voice of god to get people "to go [frick] yourself"?

And yes Dogma is sort of similar, although the problems were caused by angels, Dogma is way too diluted from the original concept to be considered comparable to Preacher (although having a prophet be a stripper takes guts).

Apparently not many of the people that visit this site read Preacher, since most talk is just done by 3 or 4 people.

Thanks for posting this man. I wrote CBM about this the day it broke and they never reported on it. I'm pyched that someone finally put something up. Here's a link to John's blogsite, where he first announced it after the news had leaked.

As it says there, Sony is the brave soul that plans on giving this one another go. Here's August's IMDB page.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0041864/

You're right in saying that most of his movies are family friendly (including his 3 Burton films and Titan A.E.) but he did write "Go". If you remember that one, it was a pretty hard R, Tarantino-esque pic. I think he's got it in him to pull out all of the stops. He's a pretty strong writer.

I think you're right about Mendez too; he's not afraid to upset, and Perdition was an incredible adaptation. Here's hoping, right? This one is ten times less likely to get made than watchmen was, but that somehow happened so who knows. The Ennis script never happened and even HBO thought it was too dark, so who can say. Let's keep our fingers crossed that if they do it, they do it with a retarded, drooling messiah and a chicken #&$%ing cousin.

And cheers for the robert carlyle pick. Hell yeah. The man would be perfect for the part.

lol, jesus i forgot about the retarded messiah! Thats the one that will get this movie banned!..but if they just focus on Gone To Texas then all that Grail stuff probably wont feature.

"suffer the little children..Humperdumperdoo!"

lol, the more I think about it the more I can picture Benedict XVI's sermon regarding the movie, and I know no matter how angry I picture him it'll be a trillion times worse.

"brothas and sistaas, ah have seen the face of Satan..and he wears a the collar of a holyman!..Anyone that sees this movie will burn in eternal damnation!"

I cant wait for the backlash..providing its a good movie of course..Dogmas stirred up some shit but was shit so it didnt matter!
