There's an understandably huge amount of excitement surrounding showrunner Russell T Davies' return to Doctor Who, especially as it looks set to kick off with the return of David Tennant, this time as the Fourteenth Doctor. He replaces Jodie Whittaker for next year's 60th-anniversary specials, of course, though the baton will eventually be passed to Ncuti Gatwa.

The Sex Education star is going to be joined by Millie Gibson (Coronation Street) as new companion Ruby Sunday, and they're already hard at work on their first season together. That's received a major upgrade courtesy of a financial contribution from the franchise's new streaming home outside the UK, Disney+.

In the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine (via SFFGazette.com), Davies sheds some light on the franchise's future, kicking off by confirming that Christmas Specials are making a comeback!

"For the first time ever, I'm writing a Christmas Special at Christmas!" he exclaimed, adding: "The 2023 script has been long since signed off. The new one is for end-of-year 2024!"

As is so often the case, with good news comes some bad as season 14 looks set to be a little shorter than what we've grown used to. Confirming it will consist of only eight episodes, Davis acknowledged "that's fewer episodes than the last full season," but requested that fans "give us time. We have plans, and that's a promise!"

After what will eventually be a thirteen-month wait for new Doctor Who content, the showrunner concluded by saying that, moving forward, there's "a serious plan" that consists of, "annual 'Doctor Who,' no gap years, lots of content, on and on."

It's a good time to be a fan of the franchise, and we're relieved to know Davies has plans to get this series to a place where it's consistently on our television screens. Many fans hope that eventually leads to a movie, of course, and it really does feel like the sky is the limit with the showrunner back at the helm of this iconic sci-fi property.

He also confirmed recently the background in the photo above is edited, as the legit one would be a spoiler. So damn buzzing for more RTD Dr Who, never mind with Disney+ budgets for episodes. Time to put it back on the map

The more I see Ruby Sunday, the more I think she might actually be Rose Tyler's daughter.

1) Ruby Sunday sounds so much like a stage name or something. It might not be the actual name of the character. Remember that Melody Pond renamed herself River Song so the show isn't shy of hiding a character's true identity and relevance to the mythology.

2) Ruby Sunday is deliberately made to look like Rose Tyler. Millie Gibson doesn't really look like Billie Piper in real life.

3) She looks so young, she could actually BE the daughter of Rose Tyler and the Meta-Crisis Tenth Doctor.

“ Ruby Sunday is deliberately made to look like Rose Tyler” I don’t see the resemblance but anything possible

Always love Dr. Who no matter which version made the Tardis their home. I just don't want another companion to fall in love with the Doctor, at least no time soon. That is why I always enjoyed Donna Noble. She was more of a sister to the Doctor and had no interest in him at all romantically.

Donna Noble was more of a mate to the Doctor.

... Wait no, that came out wrong. She was a mate. A MATE.

I’m happy to finally see promising news about Doctor Who. The past few years have been so disappointing.

Well, there might have been a few "false starts" but we'll get there in the end.

along with good writing, this show needs some good new monsters and villains, and to illustrate this, it comes back to another non-Doctor Who related article we had on this very site, that will lead to this, the Jonathan Majors about finding motivation for Kang, tying into what we would consider a threat today, this is exactly what Doctor Who needs. The Daleks and Cybermen were born from 60s fears, this is exactly what we need today!

the Thirteen Doctor era just gave us forgettable monsters and then the old favourites were brought back out...and as for the old favourites, save them for when you have a script that makes them feel scary again

@dancingmonkey08 - writing new monsters should be the easiest thing, they need to give The daleks and Cybermen a long break.

@Taonrey - its not exactly easy, in 17 years of the show being back, theres been about 5 decent memorable new monsters; Ood, Weeping Angels, Vashta Nerada, Sycorax and the Silence...

The main problem with the 13th Doctor is the Timeless Children storyline, that needs to be erased to get a large portion of viewers to watch the show again. The idea that William Hartnell was not the first Doctor is received by many as an insult to the legacy of the shows IRL history along with in-universe lore.

Change it so the Master was the Timeless Child, he discovered the truth and slaughtered Gallifrey as a response. He tricked the Doctor into thinking it was themselves in order to make the Doctor understand the Master more. The Master is now more justified, sympathetic and you also have an explanation for why he is tied to the Doctor so heavily in that he feels a kinship with a fellow outcast of Gallifrey. It also adds more to the interactions in past seasons and it turns what was a throw away plotline introduced just to make the Doctor's original form a little black girl, who regenerated into a range of diverse versions because the creator felt that the history of the show was racist, into actually having a relevancy to the plot of future storylines.

@Scarilian - no offense, but I disagree, nothing wrong with the Timeless Child idea, go read about the Cartmel Masterplan, the idea there was a bunch of incarnations have been referenced since back in 1976, but as with the entire problem of Chibnall's era, its the way it was delivered

I do agree with you, Hartnell MUST be the First Doctor, Im currently re-watching the whole series all over again, just finished The Web Planet, and its always fascinating watching his incarnation become THE Doctor we know and love, BUT the idea that he could have been an entirely different person before he was reset and lost his memory is interesting, so Hartnell being the First DOCTOR, but he used to exist as the Timeless Child (or the Other as it was in the original Cartmel idea) is a cool idea

but Chibnall did it absolutely crap, and in the end, did it really matter, as it was never explored again beyond the Flux series...

Actually no, If you've looked at the ratings for the show recently, as well as the quality of the show itself, including it's incessant need to crap on the history and continuity of everything people have loved all these years, it's a terrible time to be a Doctor Who fan. And I am extremely skeptical it's going to improve.

@Zappy - yeah I'm not holding my breath that it will improve much. The decisions being made in the wake of Jodie's farewell haven't given me any reason to be hopeful.

Skeptical side of me is that Tennant and the nostalgia bait is only going to be used to try and bring back new fans in order to insult them, similar to The Last Jedi bringing Luke back just to make him utterly pathetic and kill him off. The potential for Tennant to basically accept his death ('I want to go') in order to allow the next Doctor to take over is something I can see RTD writing.

In this case the potential threat being the Celestial Toymaker, who might be motivated by wanting the Doctor to 'stay the same' and refusing to let him grow/change is concerning. I don't want the message of Tennant's return to be social commentary on the Doctor Who fanbase needing to accept the past is in the past ('Let the past die'), because they are evidently using the past as a method of marketing and selling their show repeatedly.

The most excited I’ve been for Doctor Who in a loooooong time. Can’t wait to see what they bring to the table for the specials and next season.

On the surface reducing the episode count down to 8 per season might seem a bit disappointing but I'm a quality over quantity guy so if that means better storytelling with more well-rounded writing and no filler episodes then that's good news to me!!!
Scarilian
Scarilian - 12/11/2022, 8:33 AM
@AC1 -
In theory, yes, but reduced quantity does not necessarily mean the quality is going to be better on the episodes we get either. We had that demonstrated with the split season 6 and 7 under Moffat.

RTD had some good episodes in the past, but I'm sure it's a rose tinted view of his writing capabilities and I feel at the time his political and social commentary was more accepted by the general public whereas nowadays the political and social spectrum is so emphasized that there's a risk of alienating viewers depending on how it is handled.
Scarilian
Scarilian - 12/11/2022, 8:48 AM
I'm concerned about bringing Tennant back. He's a great actor and it'll be nostalgic but you run a huge risk of angering fans and causing further abandonment of the show. The potential for them to turn it into a 'I want to go' scenario where Tennant's Doctor realizes that he has a responsibility to let change happen, when paired with the Toymaker's potential to mirror the fanbase who disliked change is very worrisome.

It may spike the viewership briefly having all this nostalgia but it's unlikely to continue into the Ncuti era unless the quality of story telling is strong - even so those who are nostalgic will then be comparing the new series to the highlights of what they were nostalgic for, raising the bar of quality needed.

Concerning story, the Timeless Child aspects needs to be erased. It angered way too many of the fanbase, is an insult to the show's IRL legacy and developed lore and it generally contributed nothing other than Jo Martin who was wasted in the role. Until that is gone a lot of people just won't pick up the show again even with Tennant returning.

Ncuti can be a great role, but whoever his PR person is needs to do a really good job because when he's left to his own devices he just rambles on about diversity, representation and inclusion which are neat buzzwords but you need to sell us on your personality, acting skills and you actually caring about the show as opposed to claiming the show was racist before you got here.

Similarly, RTD, the audience understands you'll include social commentary and political stuff like before but maybe tone it down until you've proven you can revive this show from it's utter lack of viewership. The show at the moment is in the apathy stage, even with Tennant showing up the finale of the Jodie Era did not top the lowest viewed of the RTD era. You've got a long way to go to prove you won't just break the show down as your political/social vehicle, especially given that Disney is involved in this.
