Veteran DOCTOR WHO Writer Reveals Why He Believes The Franchise Is Now "As Dead As We've Ever Known It"

We're no closer to knowing what the plan is for Doctor Who after that big Billie Piper cameo, and one veteran Whoniverse writer has shared his take on where things currently stand with the franchise...

When the BBC announced a partnership with Disney+ in October 2022, the idea was to bring Doctor Who to a larger global audience than ever before. In exchange for the show's streaming rights, the House of Mouse gave the long-running sci-fi series a cash injection, leading to a long-overdue big-budget overhaul.

Unfortunately, even with better effects and bigger-name guest stars like Frozen's Jonathan Groff, Doctor Who didn't prove itself a ratings hit on either television ot streaming. Reviews for both seasons and the seasonal specials were mixed, and many fans rejected returning showrunner Russell T Davies' "woke" take on the Time Lord.

Netflix and HBO Max are supposedly in the mix to replace Disney+ should the streamer decide to step out of the TARDIS. We've also heard that, if needs be, the BBC will continue to produce Doctor Who without a partner, even if it means fewer episodes per year and a smaller budget.

It's been months since we've had a definitive update on the show's future. As we first reported on SFFGazette.comDoctor Who Magazine spoke with Robert Shearman, a writer who has worked on both the TV series—including the classic 2005 "Dalek" episode—and several novels and audio adventures.

Addressing the current state of the Doctor Who franchise, he said, "I go through phases. I have a real push/pull thing with the show. At the moment, I’m in a 'pull' phase. It’s weird because the show is probably as dead as we’ve ever known it."

Shearman elaborated on the show being "dead" by saying, "After 1989, we had, for years, a current Doctor. Now, everything that is ever going to be produced in Doctor Who terms is going to feel retrogressive. At least with the New Adventures and then the BBC Books [original novels published in the nineties] you thought, 'It’s the current Doctor – McCoy or McGann.'"

"No one’s going to start writing Doctor Who books with a Billie Piper Doctor, because no one knows what that means," the writer added. "In a funny way, the closing moments of The Reality War seem to put a full stop on things. We didn’t have that before. I don’t know that it matters, but it’s a strange thing: it’s made me want to embrace it, because the whole of Doctor Who feels like it’s in its own bubble."

Davies has indeed left Doctor Who in a tough spot. When the series was taken off the air in 1989 (before eventually returning in 2005), it left plenty of room for new stories to be told with the then-current status quo of the Sylvester McCoy or Paul McGann Doctors.

However, with so much ambiguity surrounding who, or what, Piper is playing—she wasn't even introduced as the new Doctor—the Doctor Who franchise remains stuck in limbo, in more ways than one.

Keep checking back here for updates on Doctor Who's future as we have them.

Forget people calling it woke. Other than the writing, directing, editing, & acting all being terrible, the show had few other problems.

@Zoowie214 - Well, modern Hollywood has already destroyed Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Terminator, Predator, Robocop, Aliens, and a plethora of other classic franchises.
So, if they haven't ruined one you loved, just wait...they'll get around to it!

@DraculaX - that’s not true. It was at the height of its popularity during the Matt Smith run.

I see that everyone completely misses the point he is making as sounded like to me he is talking about continuation stories of the Doctor as nobody is going to be doing Doctor Piper stories like they did with Dr McCoy as he was a known entity that had seasons and even McGann we had enough to grasp what kind of Doctor he was. However they will still write stories for ALL incarnations of the Doctor just like they would have done if Gatwa was getting a third season, just won't be any for Billy Pipers version until that onscreen cliffhanger is resolved one way or another.

However SOMEONE wlll be working out ideas as to how that TV cliffhanger will be resolved, likely RTD and ones he has talked to whilst everyone waits to get full clarification with Disney or another company being in partnership and what the Beeb themselves plan on doing. Again, however, all the rest that do the audio plays and books will either be in a holding pattern or as he says doing retrogressive stories for all the Doctors prior to Billy, or at least all prior to Ncuti anyway.

TheVisionary25 - 10/15/2025, 7:32 PM
@Apophis71 - exactly

Until/if the cliffhanger with Billie is resolved then we won’t get any contemporary DW material and if we do then it will likely be audio dramas and books about past Doctors or other aspects of this universe like UNIT.

We have some missing 1960s episode announcements coming soon, far, far more exciting and interesting than NuWho.

@Corruptor - still hoping the my rediscover a lot of the 2nd Doctor’s run. It is the run missing the most episodes and he is easily the most influential Doctor in the series. Especially in New Who as he seems to be the template for both Smith and Tennant.

It’s all down the the actor and the writing. Up until Tom Baker left it was always great, the after an average period David Tenant took the roll and knocked it out of the park, ever since then it’s been slowly going downhill until this last lot with the help of the Disney D&I squad killed it. Very sad really as it was a big part of my childhood and holds many fond memories for me, mostly hiding behind the sofa as it was too scary to watch!

I actually agree with everything he said.

I love Doctor Who but maybe it is time for it to go away for a decade and come back with people with real passion to reinvent it just as RTD did with New Who.

It’s not really his “take” but moreso just him stating a fact tbh…

While him using the word “dead” might not be appropriate , it’s evident that the future of DW has never been as uncertain as it is now (atleast in 1989-2005 , people thought the show was cancelled and wasn’t ever going to be back so there was some certainty there).

Sure , we have the War Between The Land and Sea show coming relatively soon but that’s really it outside of audio dramas which would be of past Doctors & other characters in the universe so the franchise is pretty much on hold on screen until we get any sort of resolution on Billie Piper being The Doctor or not which likely won’t happen until the spinoff airs whenever that is.

Anyway as a fan of DW and someone who has liked RTD’s current run on the franchise so far , I hope we get a renewal sooner then later even if I’m bummed that we won’t get more Ncuti on screen as the Fifteenth Doctor!!.
