Disney+ Pulled Plug On DOCTOR WHO Because It Was "Too Woke For Trump's USA" And Failed To "Marvel-ize" Series

A new report takes a deep dive into why Disney+ decided to walk away from its Doctor Who partnership with the BBC, and the deciding factors include the creative, money, star Ncui Gatwa, and...Trump?!

Doctor Who has long been a quintessentially British series, with most of its fanbase based in the UK. The show has a relatively small audience in the U.S. and overseas, and the BBC's deal with Disney+ was supposed to bring it to a global audience in a big way.

Instead, Russell T Davies' latest revival was a flop, and it failed to even top the ratings for Jodie Whittaker's disappointing stint in the TARDIS (which, despite her well-received take on the first female Doctor, was widely regarded as a failure, creatively speaking).

Deadline (via SFFGazette.com) has taken a deep dive into why Disney+ decided to walk away from Doctor Who, explaining that, "What was conceived as a plan to Marvel-ize the franchise did not translate into a big bang."

The all-new "Whoniverse" is said to have fallen apart for several reasons, and not even lead star Ncuti Gatwa has emerged unscathed. An unnamed Doctor Who source told the trade that his reluctance to embrace the role ultimately hurt the show.

"There is more to that role than performing," they said. "You have got to be an ambassador for the brand and embrace being that generation’s Doctor. Matt Smith and David Tennant fully understood the responsibility it carried." The actor's busy schedule meant he played only a minor role in at least half of Season 1.

Money might have been the biggest factor, as Disney reportedly regretted spending so much on the series (you'll recall that the deal was made when former Disney CEO Bob Chapek was throwing as many resources as possible into streaming). The budget was between $6 million - $8 million an episode, taking the value of this deal to as much as $169 million.

With Doctor Who failing to secure new Disney+ subscribers, it was not a good investment. BBC sources argue that Disney+ never got behind the show in terms of marketing, though those representing the House of Mouse dispute the claims.

Much was said about the show's "woke" themes upon its return, including a same-sex kiss for the Doctor, drag queen Jinkx Monsoon as a villain, and an episode about incel robots. A well-placed industry source tells the site that Doctor Who became "too woke for Trump's USA," with this being a "factor in Disney minds" when it came to not continuing the partnership.

So, what's next for Doctor Who? Well, Davies will be back for a 2026 Christmas Special, which "can be a reset and buys everyone time to make decisions," says one source close to the show. However, the budget will be slashed, with the BBC spending at most $2.5 million - $3 million per episode.

The door isn't closed on another U.S.-based partner entering the mix, but the likes of HBO and Netflix don't appear to be in talks with the BBC as of now.

As always, keep checking back here for updates on Doctor Who's future as we have them.

@TheFinestSmack - Well they have to throw that into appease certain people because they know full well most people are not on board with all of this so they have to just say oh well it's just Trump's USA. they knew damn well aside from a very annoying and loud minority people were getting sick of the constant identity messaging.

I'm not even going to call it woke be cause it makes some here set their hair on fire. But we all know what time it is.

@DarthOmega - I rarely use that word either but at least now most people are acknowledging that the messaging HAS BEEN part of the problem. At least it was in this case for Doctor Who. The vast majority of my friends are progressive; many of them far left, and a good many of them even quietly told me that even when the BBC brought Tennant back, the messaging was through the roof. And it never eased up.

If “Trump’s America” means people who like a show that has a good creative storyline devoid of social issues and just sets out to try and tell a great story then yes.

Look

Trump sucks. He's made the country worse in every way.

But most Americans don't fw Doctor Who. It's corny and bizarre. It was never going to become a reliable IP like Marvel or Star Wars.

@ShellHead - BS. America was a laughing stock under Dr. Dementia. Now that we're no longer the world's ATM, or policeman, you say the country is "worse in every way."

After 4 years of importing 20 million criminals, selling out to China, lying to the American people about the mental state of its "president", using the government to persecute political opponents, and pandering on social issues that most Americans object to, it's good to have a president who is actually putting the country first. He's president of America, not president of the world, ala BHO.

@SonOfAGif - - "Inflation increasing,"

You mean cooling per last month's report.

"Unemployment increasing,"

Where?

"Bailing out a foreign country while your farmers are on the cusp of foreclosure, "

What foreign country? Farmers are doing better since January but still having trouble because of democrats and the Biden regime:

https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2025/10/local-tyrants-how-property-rights-farmers-battleground-states/

"Secure funding for a Ballroom & Arc de Trump"

Didn't cost the taxpayer a dime. Presidents going back decades talked about doing it and now it's not okay because he did it and without federal money? 😀

" instead of negotiating for the government to reopen,"

He has. Democrats are holding the country hostage. Most Americans know it. Ask CNN.

"Record Gun crimes, "

Less crime since ICE got to do their jobs. Still the worst in democrat-run cities, though.

"Using the military against American citizens,"

You mean for American citizens since they voted for it and support it by majority. Tell your lazy, corrupt politicians to do their jobs and stop blaming the President for helping. You people are so backwards.

"Allowing a foreign country with ties to Hamas to build a military base in Idaho, "

Proof? Sounds like democrat projection since they allowed all the illegal aliens and terrorists inside the interior.

"want me to continue?"

Yes, give me something else I can destroy. In the meantime, your failed, anti-American party still couldn't run a lemonade stand.

@knomad - Your good president who's "putting the country first" is letting millions of Americans lose food and health benefits while accepting gifts worth millions from foreign leaders, his tariffs are destroying American farmers and small businesses, he's giving 40 billion to Argentina because he's buddies with its equally corrupt abusive president, he's spending over 300 million on an ego-stroking ball room that saw him demolish the entire East wing after saying he wouldn't touch it (much like Medicaid, which he also said he wouldn't touch, then turned around and gutted).

His approval ratings are the lowest of any president at this point in his term in the entire history of our country -- even lower than they were at this point in his FIRST term. And do I need you to remind you that he's a 34x convicted felon, impeached twice for obstruction and corruption, found liable in civil court of sexual abuse and assault, is a known friend and frequent companion of Jeffrey Epstein?

And that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Trump's many crimes and transgressions.

Look, if you want to love Trump, love him. Knock yourself out. But you're fooling yourself and ignoring what's happening across this country if you think he's doing the American people one lick of good. The longer he's in power, the more blatant and outrageous his corruption will be. We know this, because that's exactly what happened in his first term. And we saw how that first term ended -- with his supporters storming the Capitol and attacking police, smearing shit on the walls, and bringing a gallows with the stated intent of hanging the vice president, because the VP refused to violate the Constitution like Trump wanted him to.

As a veteran, I took an oath to uphold the Constitution. I believe in it. Trump wipes his ass with it. And if you support him, so do you.

So whereas you say 'good president." I say "[frick]ing [foo foo]."

But now please tell me which part of the Constitution that President Trump has wiped his ass with...?

@ShellHead - country is much better than the last 4 years under Biden
LoudLon
LoudLon - 10/31/2025, 10:32 AM
@JstaKIDfrmBKLYN - For starters? Ignoring due process. Insurrection. Abuse of power. Emoluments. Obstruction of Congress.

But that's all I'm going to bother saying. For a decade we've warned that he's a criminal. For ten years his supporters tell us to orove it. For ten years we've provided mountains of evidence. For ten years his supporters have chosen to ignore it, or call it fake -- anything that doesn't fit what they want to believe.

I appreciate your thanks for my service, sincerely. But Trump supporters have got to get theur heads out of the sand and recognize Trump for the cancer that he is.

Or at least start doing their own homework. Frankly. I'm tired of wasting my breath.

@knomad - Your opinion, but doesn't match public sentiment. Donny Dementia has the worst approval rating of any President at this point in their term. 39% approval rating on the economy.
knomad
knomad - 11/1/2025, 11:17 AM
@ConnorMacLeod - Wrong. According to RealClearPolitics, an average of a ton of polls, Trump's job approval is 45%, better than Obama, Bidet or Bush at this point of his 2nd term.

Inflation going down.. projected GDP growth 3.9% (according to the Atlanta Fed).. Billions pouring into the treasury.. 8 wars ended.. Yeah, he's terrible huh?

Lie somewhere else.
ConnorMacLeod
ConnorMacLeod - 11/1/2025, 5:46 PM
@knomad - Latest poll released Oct 29 shows his approval rating at 39%. If Rasmussen Reports latest has him at 45%, his actual number is much much lower.

The inflation rate just rose to 3% in September. Annual average inflation rate in 2024 was 2.9% so how exactly is that going down?

Billions pouring into the treasury.... through tariffs? You do realize those are just a tax on Americans? 😄 Majority of tariffs have been declared illegal and might have to be paid back in full regardless.

We'll see what his actual GDP growth is. Trump's average annual GDP growth was 2.3% in his first term. Biden's annual GDP growth was 3.2%.

8 wars ended is a stretch, still hasn't solved the most important war, which he claimed he would do Day 1.

Yes, we can agree that he's terrible and deeply unpopular.🤣 I know facts are hard for some, but they're not lies.
knomad
knomad - 11/1/2025, 6:51 PM
@ConnorMacLeod - I said nothing about Rasmussen. RCP is an average of many polls. 45% average means some were well over.

Much of the tariffs have been eaten by the Exporting countries. Or you would have seen way higher inflation. Maybe up to Bidet's 9%? And why do you want other countries tariffing us without reciprocation? You hate America?

The Atlanta Fed predicts 3.9%. And the Fed haven't been Trump fans. It could easily be over 4%.

How many wars did your precious demented incestuous PINO end?

No, we're not agreeing on anything. Except that you are consumed with TDS hated.
ConnorMacLeod
ConnorMacLeod - 11/2/2025, 1:07 AM
@knomad - Trump has the second lowest approval of any President in their 19th quarter in recent history, only Nixon tops him at 31.8% George W. Bush (43.9%) and Barack Obama (44.5%) were the only other presidents with sub-50% third-quarter ratings in their second terms, but still higher than Trump's 40%. If you think Trump's approval rating is anywhere near 45% you live in fantasyland. RCP heavily skews right in their polling. Any recent polling shows him anywhere from 39-42%.

Exporting countries don't eat the tariffs, the exporter may have eaten 'some' of the tariffs, but more likely the importer is absorbing the extra cost, or simply slowly passing them on to the consumer once they exhaust their current inventory. Consumer prices are expected to be higher come holiday shopping season. Biden's not responsible for worldwide high inflation post pandemic, or should I blame Trump for his 14.8% unemployment rate? 🙄

Vast majority of countries have reasonably low tariff rates on US exports. Before the trade war, according to World Bank numbers, average applied U.S. tariff across all products was 1.61%; average rate of 1.6% for the EU, and slightly higher than Japan’s 1.35%. Among other major U.S. trading partners, Canada’s average applied tariff rate was 0.85%, China’s was 3.54% and Mexico’s was 4.36%. Trump's minimum 10% blanket tariffs can't be called "reciprocal" in any fashion.
Using Switzerland as an example, has a MFN tariff of 0.2% on US exports, now has its exports subject to a whopping 39% US “reciprocal” tariff. 🙄

Not American so I don't have a President. Probably as many as the current dementia riddled pedophile sexual assaulter/rapist?

Nah, TDS is for those that think he's still somehow doing a good job and are oblivious to actual facts. 🤣

"too woke for Trump's USA," with this being a "factor in Disney minds"

Nonsense. What does Trump have to do with it? You think viewers are not going to watch something because of who the President is? If anything, people who hate Trump would do the opposite. So weird. The viewership of the audience is going to change because of who wins? They people are insane.

They cancelled it for the same reason they did Acolyte. It was terrible, expensive, and no one watched it. Its the same reason most D+ series don't get second seasons. Like take accountability and understand why your products are failing. Freakin three Marvel movies finacially fail in the theaters in one year and its someone elses fault.

and BTW, when do people start blaming the activists who pretend to support these products? Isn't that who its for?
