There's a lot of uncertainty surrounding The CW's future and what sort of role DC TV shows will have on the network moving forward. HBO Max looks set to be the home of most projects based on the DC Universe from now on, and we've recently bid farewell to the likes of Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman (with The Flash likely next to get the axe).
However, the network is forging ahead with Gotham Knights, a series that has nothing to do with the upcoming video game, but will follow a group of teenagers who step up to protect Gotham City after Batman's death.
We know Navia Robinson is playing Carrie Kelley, but she's now confirmed that the character was the Dark Knight's Robin at some point in time. "I think Carrie is everybody's inclination to help and be positive and be kind of resilient," she explains in an interview with TV Line. "Carrie was Batman’s sidekick."
As for her costume, Robinson added, "It’s a very practical, more tactical suit which I’m really into. It’s pretty cool. But you can like actually believe that she fights crime in it, which is great because very often we see the classic Robin which is its own beauty within itself. But it’s also like nobody’s fighting crime in tights."
So, no classic Robin then.
We'll obviously see how this turns out. However, with Gotham Knights' lead a newly created character, Turner Hayes, who was Bruce Wayne's adopted son and is framed for killing Batman, it's clear this is an original tale. Despite that, another familiar character from the comic books who will make her presence felt is Olivia Rose Keegan as Duela Dent, a.k.a. The Joker's Daughter.
"Duela is sort of like the full embodiment of like every wild instinct you’ve ever had, which I think we all have that part of ourselves," the actor reveals. "But it’s so crazy to see and to think like, ‘Oh, what if you let that take over your whole entire self?’ So she’s fireball, she’s wildcard, she’s the Joker’s daughter."
Well, we're definitely intrigued to see where this one is going and how it puts a fresh spin on this corner of the DC Universe. Seeing as Batwoman established that Batman had gone missing (a mystery we're unlikely to ever get the answer to), common sense says this show will be set in its own reality away from the wider Arrowverse, a reality that, sadly, seems to be on its way out.
Are you excited for Gotham Knights?
