GOTHAM: The Real Joker Has Arrived In The New Promo For Season 4, Episode 17: "Mandatory Brunch Meeting"

Despite a lot of love from fans, the producers have been fairly adamant that Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan) is not the real Joker from Batman lore, but if it's not him, then who is it?

While recent set photos have seemingly revealed that Monaghan will be breathing life into a new character this season, it remains uncertain whether or not this is the aforementioned Joker or if his Jerome just got a ghosty makeover. Regardless, based on the new promo, it looks like we're going to find out the truth next week, in an episode that will also see Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) try to contain several of the city's most dangerous villains, including The Mad Hatter (Benedict Samuel), Mr. Freeze (Nathan Darrow), Firefly (Michelle Veintimilla), the Riddler (Cory Michael Smith), and the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor).

Watch the new promo for episode seventeen, titled "Mandatory Brunch Meeting," below:

Good episode tonight, the highlight was definitely Jerome; he's always a treat. Some of the sideplots were less interesting.

Seeing the blonde woman next to Jerome and also that place that can be a Bank, I remembered someone.

Is this woman the Harley Quinn of Gotham? Harleen Quinzel is Harley Quinn in the DCEU, and Marian Drews is Harley Quinn in the "Gotham Universe". It's possible.

Such a shame that they didn't make this show a great Batman show. The villains are absolutely perfect....just no Batman...

@Ayush -
Because it was never announced, promised, or intended to be a "Batman" show. It's a Batman Universe show with a Batman origin on the side. If you expected Batman, that's on you. Just don't pick up any side Batman Universe comic in the vein of Gotham Central, Nightwing, Arkham Asylum: Living Hell, Gotham Academy, Catwoman, Gotham City Sirens, ETC, and expect to see much of Batman either.

@Darkknight2149 - The shame is that they present the villains so well that if it was a Batman show it would be even greater. It's doing too good a job for it's plot.

It's not like Smallville where some baddies were very lack luster.

TBH, I'm more concerned that Krypton is about to exist. I mean, we already got Smallville... Pick someone else. A Green Lantern prequel, maybe? We haven't seen much of Abin Sur and Sinestro's relationship explored on screen. Just about anything would be better than retreading old ground with a character that already had a ten-season origin story in an entire pantheon of DC Universe characters.

@Darkknight2149 - I never said I expected Batman. I said there's lost potential on an otherwise great show to not include Batman.

Even so, we were never promised a Batman show, though we get some of that with teenage vigilante Bruce Wayne (similar to The Blur from Smallville).

@Darkknight2149 - You keep saying we were never promised a Batman show to a person who knows this. Why are you doing that? Why are you saying things as if you're pointing out new information?
GAThrawnIGF
GAThrawnIGF - 3/30/2018, 10:21 AM
@Darkknight2149 - But Krypton isn't about Superman's life at all, so the two shows aren't infringing on each other.
Darkknight2149
Darkknight2149 - 3/30/2018, 1:21 PM
@BackwardGalaxy -
Because people keep acting like this is a Batman show, or complain as if it's a Batman show without Batman. And while you may know this, I've seen plenty of people on this site use that exact term to describe it. I've even seen people argue that it IS a Batman show simply because of the origin plot, and have used that as a front for their complaints. The fact of the matter is that it isn't. It's an ensemble Gotham City show. If anyone has a problem that Batman isn't in it, that is solely a "you" problem. That's not the show's problem.
Darkknight2149
Darkknight2149 - 3/30/2018, 1:36 PM
@GAThrawnIGF -
If it was just a SyFy show exploring Krypton's society and whatnot, I could go along with it. But that's not how they are approaching it at all. It's essentially a second prequel, going the origin story route of leading in to Superman's destiny as "the greatest hero in the universe." Krypton is the Superman answer to Gotham, which was already the Batman answer to Smallville. Frankly, we don't need a second Superman prequel.

DC has an entire pantheon of superheroes, and many of which have rich and extensive histories attached to them. Why are we going back to Superman? If these DCTV origin story re-imaginings are going to be a regular thing, they need to pick someone else. Do Themyscira (Wonder Woman), Sector 2814 (Green Lantern starring Abin Sur), or something.

What's next? Are we going to get a second Batman prequel about the seven years Bruce Wayne spent training around the world?

TerryTerrapin - 3/30/2018, 5:37 PM
@Ayush - To be honest I think after season five they should just do a soft reboot. Set it ten years later in the same universe, but recast some of the characters like Bruce and Selina, so we can actually get Batman in it. How old is Bruce meant to be now anyway?

Although I'd be in favour in keeping it like this if Titans gives us a good Batman that can have his own show at one point.

That would completely defeat the purpose of the show. Plus, even if it were cancelled tomorrow, Warner Brothers would never allow their movie cash cow to be placed on the small screen (at least not in any major capacity).

Someone got the time to give me the rundown on what the hell is going on with this Joker deal?
dracula
dracula - 3/29/2018, 9:27 PM
@ArkhamKnight195 - Yes it has gotten better, really it has been better every year, so basically this guy is Jerome, he appeared in 1 episode of season 1 and was sent to arkham after killing his mother, then at the begining of season 2 he was broken out along with a few others by Theo Galavant, the big bad of the first half of season 2, and was then killed by Theo, but his body was taken to Indian Hill, a secret lab beneath the asylum run by the court of owls. who were trying to bring people back to life, in season 3 his body was taken by the cult of Jerome, who's leader cut off his face and wore it after he thought he failed to bring him back, but when he did wake up he killed that guy, stapled his face back on, blew up the citys power plant, then kidnapped Bruce so he could try to kill him again, since he failed to do in season 2. Bruce kicked his ass, then Gordon punched his face off, then he was sent back to Arkham where his face was reattached

Really hoping that the "big reveal" can help turn this season around after the plethora of uninspired villains they've had (Professor Pyg, Poison Ivy, Sophia Falcone). Even so, it might just be too late with the ratings continuing to drop just about every week. This show was so amazing in its first two seasons, while the third was ok, but it's clearly taken a turn for the worse lately. These last few episodes (which could very well be the last...) are going to be vital to its survival.
Darkknight2149
Darkknight2149 - 3/29/2018, 11:37 PM
@TyrionLannister -
In the comics, Professor Pyg is actually one of the scariest Batman villains ever. He has no concept of reality whatsoever and is completely out of his mind. He makes The Joker and Zsasz look sane and friendly. The problem is that most of these adaptations (Beware the Batman, Gotham, Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay, ETC) refuse to do the character justice. So far, only Arkham Knight got him right. In Gotham, he ended up being a random undercover assassin disguised as... A cop killing vigilante?

How Professor Pyg is done:

GAThrawnIGF
GAThrawnIGF - 3/30/2018, 10:23 AM
@TyrionLannister - I LOVED Pyg on Gotham. He was downright menacing and his final fight with Gordon was one of the best fights the show's ever done. I hate the character from the comics, just like I hate everything Grant Morrison's ever done. ESPECIALLY YOU, DAMIAN.
Darkknight2149
Darkknight2149 - 3/30/2018, 1:47 PM
@GAThrawnIGF -
But he's done far worse and more brutal things in the comics than force people into cannibalism. He's also far scarier and more insane. How is the Gotham version acceptable but the comic version isn't? Especially when Pyg was just an assassin's false identity. Is it merely because Grant Morrison created him?

I'm not sure why Arkham Knight is the only adaptation to do Pyg justice. Hell, DC still hasn't done the Court of Owls or Hush right (outside of the comics).

ganganor - 3/30/2018, 2:10 AM
I'm quite shocked to see a lot of favorable comments about this show. How do you not see that this is an insult to Batman fans. This show is waaayyy over the top, and it's basically saying that all of these villains were around way before batman, which means that by the time batman exists, they're older and much weaker than he is, which is not the case in any other versions. One of the cool themes in the Nolan verse, and you can see it in the comics as well, is the theme of escalation. Batman was created to stop "normal" criminals, and after he came around, a more dangerous type of criminal came about.

Also, we are not supposed to know anything about the joker. Not only are they basically leaving no room for imagination for both batman and the joker in the future as to wondering whats the identity of their sworn enemy, which is part of the fun in their rivalry, in this case, almost every villain in gotham will know who batman is. Also, this is just a pretty good heath ledger impression. Not a very original joker, and his face just look ridiculous.

Another thing that annoys me is that Bruce Wayne is pretty much a a crime fighter by now isnt he? what happened to all of his travels and years training in far away lands?

There are a lot of thing that I find annoying about this show, but different strokes and to each his own, but come on - Batman And the Joker will know who each other is!! Doesn't that bother any of you?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 3/30/2018, 3:52 AM
@ganganor - I agree with you. Unfortunately you are wasting your time.

People that like this show just latch onto the whole "it's a different reality" thing and they are fine with it.

I get it to an extent. All these comic movies aren't taking place in comic continuity either. But the thing is that MOST of them are still somewhat faithful to the overall mythos. This show is not. Not in any way.
PsychoticSpaceRaccoon
PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - 3/30/2018, 7:37 AM
@ganganor - I'm with you. As a big Batman fan, I've found this show terrible since day one. It plays fast and loose with the mythos, is silly when it doesn't need to be, and generally misunderstands the source material.

It should have been a gritty crime drama, like Batman's The Wire. Alas.
GAThrawnIGF
GAThrawnIGF - 3/30/2018, 10:33 AM
@ganganor - For a supposed Batman fan, you must have forgotten that Joker (as Red Hood), Ra's al Ghul, Talia al Ghul, Catwoman, Penguin, Hugo Strange, and Clayface were around before Batman, at the very least. Also, quite a few of these villains wouldn't be THAT old. Scarecrow is the same age as Bruce, Poison Ivy's age isn't really defined. Another thing that people don't realize is that 10 years of Batman comics is really just one year in Batman's life. The comics never played out in real time. It's why it took Dick forever to go to college.

Also, Joker knows who Batman is in the comics, and has for a long time. Hell, even Lex knows who Batman is. Bane knows, Riddler knows, Catwoman knows (obviously), Ra's knows, Talia knows, Hugo Strange knows, Penguin knows, Clayface knows. His identity is NOT as secret as you think it is.

Also, oh no! Batman being campy! It's almost like they're taking inspiration from the good era of comics! Even in the 40s, when Joker was a homicidal maniac, they offset it with humor.
