DC Studios co-chair and Peacemaker television show creator James Gunn recently disclosed that the Max streaming program would definitely address its move from the DCEU to the DCU in season 2.
However, Gunn has clarified [via Threads] that the show's shift from the DCEU to the DCU will not be the primary focus of the upcoming season.
Responding to a fan suggestion that season 1 be retconned as a Psycho-Pirate-esque hallucination, Gunn stated, "Well, I wouldn't want the universe shift to be that big a part of the story."
So, while the "universe shift" will be addressed, it won't be the main plot of Peacemaker season 2.
Earlier this week, Gunn cryptically teased, "You'll have to wait and see," when responding to fans on Threads who wanted to know how the show moves from the DCEU to DCU.
He went on to add, that he didn't want to simply reboot the show, "Because it's my favorite thing to do, it's the biggest original Max show ever, and I have a way in. It won't be confusing."
Whatever that "way in" is, it doesn't seem to involve the Psycho-Pirate, a DC Comics villain who was heavily featured in the publisher's Post-Crisis crossover event.
In the comics, Psycho-Pirate was one of the few characters who remembered that there were multiple Earths following 1986's Crisis on Infinite Earths, which resulted in DC abandoning the multiverse strategy, opting for a single, unified DC Universe (DCU).
The concept of a multiverse would be reintroduced with Geoff Johns' Infinite Crisis in 2005, which saw the publisher bring back a limited number of Earths (52) instead of an infinite number.
Peacemaker season 2 is confirmed to see John Cena's portrayal of Christopher Smith return, along with Steve Agee's John Economos. Jennifer Holland, Gunn's spouse, will also reprise her role as Emilia Harcourt.
Rotten Tomatoes gave the DCEU series a 94% approval rating, making it one of the most critically lauded productions of the franchise.
ABOUT PEACEMAKER Season 1
Peacemaker explores the continuing story of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of James Gunn's 2021 film The Suicide Squad—a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.
The 8-episode television show was created by James Gunn for the, "then-named" streaming service HBO Max.
The show stars John Cena as Christopher Smith / Peacemaker, Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase / Vigilante, Chukwudi Iwuji as Clemson Murn, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos and Robert Patrick as August "Auggie" Smith. Dee Bradley Baker voices Peacemaker's pet bald eagle, Eagly.
