Clark Gregg Thinks He Knows How He Came Back From the Dead

It seems the full mystery of how Coulson (Clark Gregg) survived Loki's pointy attack in The Avengers will only be partially explained in the pilot episode of Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. (M.A.o.S.).

Entertainment Weekly managed to grab a quick interview with Clark Gregg at yesterday's ABC Upfronts. Here's what the man of the hour had to say about Agent Coulson.

Clark Gregg Talks About Coulson's Return And The Show In General
GREGG: “I thought they were pranking me a little bit because there was so much blood on the set of The Avengers, I kept waiting to see, are we going to shoot a version where [Loki] misses? And they didn’t, so I was really surprised to get that call and I wanted to make sure it didn’t do anything to undermine what we achieved there and when [writer-director Joss Whedon] explained the mystery and how they planned to deal with it, with Agent Coulson being around, I was very sold.”

On how Agent Coulson survives? EW reports that fans will get a partial answer to that question in the pilot.
GREGG: “He’s [Coulson] back. He’s thinks he knows how he’s back. We’ll have to see.”

But is Agent Coulson immortal? Are his methods supernatural?
GREGG: “I have a feeling if they killed me off again it would be for good so I’m very careful to read the end of the script every time I get one. It’s like getting struck by lightning. I kind of hope it hits somebody else first before it comes back to me.”

Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel's feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson's team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) expert pilot and martial artist, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker); brilliant engineer and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).

From Executive Producers Joss Whedon ("Marvel's The Avengers," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." pilot co-writers ("Dollhouse," "Dr.Horrible's Sing-Along Blog"); Jeffrey Bell ("Angel," "Alias"); and Jeph Loeb ("Smallville," "Lost," "Heroes") comes Marvel's first TV series. "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.

I wonder if the show can "afford" to have some or at least one of the Avengers for a short cameo. Hell I don't even know if they can show footage from the MCU movies...they should be able to but...I don't know.

I just don't see any of the big dogs from the films appearing on the show.

I think they'll have the lesser known heroes or ones that have no plans for big screen treatments.

I'm easy to satisfy so I think I'll be happy with this

Okay this calms me a bit. I just hope there's an interesting explanation for it.

I'm not convinced I'm gonna be ok with him being back yet. His death was perfect.

I like the Batman Begins nod.

Bringing Coulson back without cheapening his dramatic death was of paramount concern for Whedon.

I would liken it to Spock's return from the dead. Yes, he was regenerated by the next film, but it was not easy, and he was not quite the same person for a long time.

@CoulsonLive

"Fury is a liar liar pants on fire, that's how the Avengers stop being part of SHIELD."

And why would Fury tell such a stupid lie that he could easily get caught with? They ruined a good scene by bringing him back.

Im going to love it when the show airs and there is a fun and crazy explanation for why he is back and this show is awesome....I dont get why people have to rag on things that they have not seen and dis the over all CBM world. I think its a good thing that studios are trying to make these show/movies/games...etc. Yeah 80% are not up to snuff and us fan-boys/girls are upset when our hero's movies are not 100% like the books, but when Frank Miller re did batman people liked it, How many story lines for Xmen have there been in the last 50 years. Movies and the like are adaptations of the source and there for not ever going to be made just like the books. I just love that we can not be ignored and the Nerd Era is going strong!

It says "Coulson Lives", which actually doesn't really explain if he died and has come back, or never died. It can be taken either way.

Once more...Whedon and Gregg have both said he died, and has come back. Not really too vague or easy to take either way.

I like Coulson's character. I'm actually glad he didn't die.

AND seeing how in the comics, NOBODY seems to stay dead also (Jean Grey, Superman, Captain America, Thor, the list could go on....), it made perfect sense. LOL

This actually calms me... It looks like they didn't go with that 'he faked his own death' lame excuse.
