Joss Whedon Talks S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Pilot, Characters, Bringing Back Maria Hill And More

Writer-director Joss Whedon talks about ABC's upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot, how true it'll be to the source material, whether or not we can expect familiar faces (such as Cobie Smulder's Maria Hill) and more.

Speaking with TV Line at the 2013 Streamy Awards, Joss Whedon discusses ABC's anticipated S.H.I.E.L.D. television pilot, which he co-wrote and directed. "I’m excited about the show because it’s a very hopeful show. It’s not about murder, and it’s not about crime, and it’s not people looking into their own belly buttons. It’s about people who are trying to help each other, and that’s one of the things I loved about comic books. They had costumes and the villains were cool [but] they stood for something, and I like doing a show that does that." Those hoping for the series to be close to Marvel's source material, the Marvel's The Avengers helmer confirms just that. "We’re trying very hard to be true to [Marvel's] ethos and also to the structure of their universe. So it is definitely a Marvel show."

However, Whedon then reiterates prior comments that the pilot (and potential series) will focus on original characters, rather than a "ton" of familiar faces (though "there’s a little bit of talk of that"). "Right now, I want to involve people in the characters that we’ve created for the show, and then we’ll worry about [the other stuff]." Cobie Smulders, who played Maria Hill in The Avengers, previously said that she had discussed the possibility of reprising the role for S.H.I.E.L.D., despite inevitable scheduling conflicts. What does Whedon have to say about it? Her schedule will permit very little" involvement, he says, "but if we can get a hold of her anytime, we will."

S.H.I.E.L.D. stars Clark Gregg, Ming-Na, Chloe Bennet, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker and Brett Dalton. The pilot is expected to air on ABC this fall, and it has yet to be picked up for a full series.

Awesome, a cool cameo here and there of a villain or two, great stuff, cannot wait for this, bout time MARVEL got into the live-action series, DC's light years ahead!

I predict it'll even top ARROW easy when airs!

Great find @ PAUL!

I hope they don't try and do to much in this show as far as being to expensive and it ends up looking fake. Im also hoping they get into the background of who the shield agents are as in character development. I'm kinda thinking they're going to put this together like a porous swat team show/ movie which I hope I'm wrong about but I will be watching when it's out.

Thewonderer, I'm sorry you feel that way. I'm even sorrier you felt the need to add something negative to a thread. It's not like we don't have enough "negativity" in the world. The worst part being how you finished off your post acting like something from the WB was anything but retarded. Says a lot about you though

Very excited for this, I hope we get some of the less spectacular marvel heroes to make an appearance, It would be amazing if Daredevil shows up in this or the punisher, or even just mark ruffalo's bruce banner for an episode, he doesn't have to transform.

I predict, by the movie audiences, that this show will be a huge hit and will teach WB how to treat the comicbook characters in TV series. Arrow is nice, but that's all it is. That's also because I'm totally confident Joss will deliver and this show will be part of a bigger universe. People love that.

The only territory WB/DC is killing Disney/Marvel by far is in animations.

Of course this will top Arrow when it airs. That's because of the Avengers films and because ABC is a bigger network than the CW. But that doesn't mean it'll be better than Arrow.

@Fogs I agree with pretty much all of what you said except that I personally really enjoy Arrow. I think it's the best live action show DC has aired to date, and light years better than Smallville. I do agree though that the Shield show will definitely have much more of a following due to the Avengers enormous success.

I've not heard anyone mention the fact that Emily VanCamp who is set to play Sharon Carter is also doing the ABC show Revenge. Since S.H.I.E.L.D. is also on ABC, it should be pretty easy for her to have a cameo every now and then.

I'm sorry to anyone who loves Arrow.

But it is, quite frankly, one of the most putrid things I've ever had the misfortune to lay my eyes upon.

I'm not exactly optimistic about SHIELD, but with Whedon heavily involved, it is all but guaranteed to be leagues superior to Arrow.

And, dun-dun-dun I'm actually a DC-guy.

I think if the show is good, it could also become a launching pad for other Marvel TV shows. CSI did this when they launched Miami and New York. They found a reason for the cast to have to travel to the other cities and work with those CSI teams. They now all exist in the same universe and occasionally cross over, but they are there own thing. This same approach could introduce AKA Jessica Jones it Heroes for Hire and then based on audience reaction, launch the spin off.

I don't understand the hate for arrow. It's my favorite show besides supernatural and walking dead. The last episode was the best one of the season. Yes, amell is kinda stiff at times but he isn't that bad. The whole list is something the whole plot revolves around and has become a great story arc for the show and now it's introducing smaller stories to add to it. I'm a huge arrow fan.

Your right on that one batz11. I can't wait to see more slade and Ollie interaction. One of the best things dc has done besides the new batman reboots. I like the dc animation as well. I bought both dark knight returns and rises the miller animation toons.

Minor Baddies:Whirlwind,Fixer, Shocker, Crossfire, Grim Reaper, Atlas, Toxie Doxie.

Established guest stars: Marc Spector, Johnny Walker, Danny Rand, Patsy Walker, Barbara Morse, Maya Lopez.

Very curious about how the show will be set up. Will it be some clandestine field office in LA, like ALIAS / MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE? Will they be based on the Helicarrier?

I think if we're lucky, we'll get to see multiple locations from the comics (the Cube?) as the series continues. They may even be able to make use of larger, expensive sets built for the movies -- that's like 2-for-1, and a load off their art department!

Absolutely cannot wait for this. Definitely think it will lead to some of the lesser known Marvel characters getting a chance. Although I wouldn't be surprised if most of the comes during later seasons and season 1 is used for the character development of the agents.

Can't wait. Not enough Marvel/DC shows on any more. We have Arrow...that's about it. Remember when we had The Incredible Hulk, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, and Captain Marvel? The good'ol days.
