DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Star Charlie Cox Reveals Biggest Issue With "Really Dumb" Bank Heist Episode

Daredevil: Born Again star Charlie Cox has made no secret of the fact that he didn't like Season 1's bank heist episode, and he's now expanded on his biggest issue with the standalone instalment.

Like Season 2, Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 was a hit with fans and critics. However, the fifth episode—titled "With Interest"—proved to be the most divisive.

Tonally, it was far more jovial than the rest of the season and felt more in line with a Mark Waid-penned Daredevil comic than one by Frank Miller or Chip Zdarsky, for example. It was also quite similar in tone to what we saw from the Man Without Fear in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

In the episode, Matt Murdock finds himself caught up in a bank robbery alongside Ms. Marvel's father, Yusuf Khan. The lawyer helped take down the robbers, and it's since been confirmed that it was the only instalment of Daredevil: Born Again left untouched by the creative overhaul.

Charlie Cox has made no secret of the fact that he wasn't a fan of "With Interest," and elaborated on why he feels that way during a recent appearance at C2E2.

"I was not a fan of the bank episode in season one of Born Again," he told fans in Chicago. "I thought it was really dumb, and I really fought against doing it in a polite way. I did end up watching it because I had to know, because I was told that when they were testing the show, it was one of the highest tested episodes of Marvel Television. And I kind of get it. It’s bingey. I had problems with it, though."

The actor went on to explain that he noticed a major plot hole that he couldn't look past. "There was a point, and I can’t remember what we ended up figuring out, but there was a point where they needed a key, so the bad guys come back after the whole heist, and they have a key to get to the lockbox, and during the heist, they moved something from one lockbox to another lockbox."

"Anyway, whatever happened, I posed the question, 'If they already had both keys, why didn’t they just go to the vault and take the thing they originally wanted?' Because they had both keys, because they switched the things around," Cox added. "The answer was a very prolonged silence until someone was like, 'Uh-huh. Yes.'"

Was the episode that bad? The tonal shift was certainly jarring, and as a standalone "bottle" episode, it didn't add much to the season. The episode was directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff and written by Grainne Godfree. Neither is credited on Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.

With Dario Scardapane now fully in charge of the Disney+ series, the second batch of episodes is far more cohesive. Plus, at 8 episodes instead of 9, it doesn't have room for a standalone chapter like "With Interest."

You can hear more from Cox and the Daredevil: Born Again cast in the player below.

In Daredevil: Born Again, survival, resistance and redemption collide as the battle for the soul of New York begins. In Season 2, Mayor Wilson Fisk crushes New York City underfoot as he hunts down public enemy number one, the Hell’s Kitchen vigilante known as Daredevil.

But beneath the horned mask, Matt Murdock will try to fight back from the shadows to tear down the Kingpin’s corrupt empire and redeem his home. Resist. Rebel. Rebuild.

Created by Dario Scardapane, Chris Ord and Matt Corman, Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 stars Charlie Cox as the titular masked vigilante (aka Matt Murdock) and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk.

"A brutal, relentless tour-de-force, Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is a Marvel masterstroke that sees Charlie Cox take the Man Without Fear to unprecedented heights, delivering the definitive take on Daredevil," we said in our 8-episode review published last week.

Daredevil: Born Again is now streaming weekly on Disney+.

So they must have a bunch of clapping seals watch these shows first

I honestly think it was one of the better episodes of Season 1, if only because it was clear that there weren't two different sets of hands at work. But if the whole season had been that, it would have been a bummer, for sure.

@Clintthahamster - interesting..:.

I feel for most of the episodes , the stitch felt pretty seamless for me with the exception of this due its somewhat lighter tone and the final 2 episodes due to the visual upgrade.

I was looking for the seams but I didn’t see or feel those until those specific episodes.

@TheVisionary25 - It was nothing jarring for me, more of just the vibe. But, to be honest, I'm kinda feeling the same way about this new season, so it may actually Scarpadane's version of the show that I'm not loving . . . IDK. I'm gonna see this one through for sure. There's enough to love that I'll stick it out.

@Clintthahamster - that’s fair

I feel the show now is closer to Netflix but it also feels different to an extent which I think it would given we have new characters and areas of story focus such as the political side etc.

I actually thought S1 was solid (though in hindsight it does feel very much like a Part 1 to Season 2’s Part 2 as being the buildup/setup to the payoff we are getting now) but I do think this season is an improvement thus far and am enjoying the more ensemble nature of it like the old series then BA S1 which very much was Matt & Fisk focused and the other characters served their stories only more or less.

It was cool as a one off. They could have easily turned that episode into a “special presentation” and tacked on a few more mins. It felt very disconnected from the main story.

I would need to rewatch the episode to really notice Charlie’s plot hole with it since I don’t really remember that aspect of it…

However while I don’t think it was a great episode , I personally did find it enjoyable since I thought it was cool to see Matt essentially being Daredevil without the suit (and it furthered his arc imo of trying to put away his darker half but being unable to) and I enjoyed the inclusion of Yusuf Khan & their interactions with each other aswell as the head robber who I thought gave a fun performance.

Plus , it did tie into the whole brewing gang war stuff that was going on in the background that gets tied off like 2 episodes later so it did fit into the bigger picture to an extent even if it was a mostly standalone episode akin to a comic one-shot etc!!.

I wish I could ask Charlie why he'd want to do S1 at all when they originally had it as a variant multiverse thing

@0bstreperous - Its not as bad as some of yall made it out to be, I watched season 1 or (4) if you ask me and it was fun, yeah the quality wasn't the same as the Netflix show which was much better, but I chalked it up to them having to stitch 2 shows together. And so far season 2 is awesome!

And it looks like Heather is going to be Muse 2.0

@0bstreperous - no problem with Charlie c0cks wanting to make money, a man's gotta eat.
butt at the end of the day, C0cks is just an actor,
disney is in charge of the product,
if Charlie goes too far against the grain,
Disney could really phuck his career up.

Funny thing is, while this was his least favorite episode, and the one least affected by the creative overhaul... it was also apparently the most watched episode of the season.

It wasn't a bad episode because it really gave Matt the ability to take down criminals as Matt Murdock with his senses and not rely on brute force like Daredevil. My issue with it is that it felt like a forced reminder that this show exists within the MCU by reminding us about Ms. Marvel and having her father be the one caught in this sequence. I love Ms. Marvel and lot that she was name dropped including a Funko Pop on his desk but I feel like they could have easily threw her in on a television report. I'm really not a fan of side characters constantly being thrown into MCU plot points for the sake of a cameo. Her father has b

I didn’t hate the episode but it was one of the weakest of last season and really showed off the bad direction they were originally going in as the bank episode is the only one that didn’t have any reshoots. It was a good thing they changed course and embraced the Netflix series and serialization.

Reminds me of the time where Ryan Reynolds called out one of the writers for the GL movie for getting the GL oath wrong in the script. Just. Trust. The. Source!

Honestly I felt like Muse was perhaps the biggest element of the show that suffered likely due to the creative overhaul given how underdeveloped he was (even with a creepy performance by Hunter Doohan)…

However I’m glad that we are seeing the ramifications of that with Heather’s trauma specifically and how he seems to perhaps be turning into the female Muse from the comics but we’ll see.

I liked as a bottle episode and the St Patrick's Day background, I feel instead of characters like the Irish guy they should had a secondary supervillain or two that could trow there and there without making the whole season about them.
