ECHO Spoilers: Here's A Full Look At Maya Lopez's Superhero Costume In The MCU

Like the vast majority of superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Maya Lopez gets a costume in Echo and you can take a closer look at her eye-catching, and culturally significant, get-up here...

Echo is thought to have been delayed by Marvel Studios on multiple occasions, explaining why our first look at Maya Lopez suited up came in the form of a LEGO Minifigure (we'd assume that was greenlit before the decision was made to give the series a TV-MA rating).

It's become a trope in these MCU TV shows for the lead to not don their superhero costumes until the finale and, unfortunately, that's the case with Echo as well.

Her costume is made by her grandmother - it appears to be something she's been working on for a long time, perhaps for Maya's mother - and The Kingpin's former protégé takes it when she needs to blend in at the Choctaw Powwow.

However, it takes on a greater meaning when Maya channels the abilities of her ancestors during a clash with Wilson Fisk. This will presumably be how she looks in the MCU moving forward and, while it's not comic-accurate, it does line up with the source material and the way Maya got an elaborate costume after becoming the new host of the Phoenix Force.

Of course, we're sure you'll have noticed that there's no sign of the handprint on Echo's face from the comics. There are strong hints she might get it during a dreamlike exchange with her mother, but it never materialises and not finding a way to incorporate that is a missed trick on Marvel Studios' part.

"Alaqua Cox is a triumph in Echo, a series which may have taken a beating in the editing room, but still manages to deliver a ferocious, culturally significant story which puts Maya Lopez on the map and ushers in a new era of MCU storytelling on TV," we said in our review earlier today.

Take a closer look at Echo's MCU costume below.

Isn't it racist as hell? I'm not sure how someone thinks it's alright at this point.

@MartianManHuntr - I understand EVERYTHING is "racist" nowadays, even if it isn't because it gives out of touch people a sounding board to regurgitate the indoctrination forced on them in schools, but what exactly is racist (in your opinion of course) about this article, the outfit, or the show?

@Feralwookiee - I mean about the way native culture is depicted. Anytime native are on screen they are shown in same way, with these clothes and all. It's like showing Africans are out of the bushes, Americans as cowboys and native as "connected" with ancestors. It's all they are shown as across multiple media, be it games like mortal Kombat, movies etc.

Hell even if it is X-Men character like Thunderbird, he also gonna wear the same shit

@MartianManHuntr - I'm not sure how that can be considered "racist" though.
You're entitled to your opinion of course.

Are the clothes of Wakandans racist as well? They were "sterotypical" African clothing and the characters were all created by two Jewish men.
Is it "racist" when an Irish character dresses in all green?

I think, as almost always, the word RACIST is thrown around way too often when it often doesn't apply at all or perhaps it's more about prejudice or sterotyping (from a certain point of view of course).

But, if the vast majority of people who are supposedly being sterotyped are NOT offended by this clothing etc, then I don't see how it can really be "racist" etc.

Some people are gonna be offended by EVERYTHING, but that doesn't make them right, nor does it mean everyone has to buckle to their opinions.

Of course if people are truly offended or bothered by these sorts of depictions, they simply can vote with their wallets and not pay to view these movies, shows, etc.
Censorship is never a good thing imo.
If you don't like something, simply don't support it I say.
Jist my take.

@Feralwookiee - Also, they heavily consulted with the tribe with both the story and the costume and test screened it there first so...

@Apophis71 - Yeah.
That's kinda what I'm saying.
Whether it's just focus grouping, which it probably is, Marvel basically covered their asses there.

At least it doesn’t look nearly as cheesy as what Marvel comics did to Thinderbird’s costume a bit back.

@mountainman - I read that one shot and did like the explanation in the comic with the importance of that color scheme

Let's make her brown, gay, deaf, and a better fighter than all straight white male characters. In season 2 let's have her defeat Thanos single handedly. No we mean literally 1 hand behind her back. Disney must love this.

@Makiveli21 - She does have quite a large number of intersectional boxes checked doesn’t she? Only way to one up it is to make her non-binary.
