THE MARVELS Star Iman Vellani Reveals MS. MARVEL's Mutant Reveal Was Added During Reshoots

Ms. Marvel remains Marvel Studios' best-reviewed TV series, and while it lacked a truly compelling villain, Iman Vellani's performance as Kamala Khan more than made up for any misfires.

It helped, of course, that the show featured a memorable ending which saw the title character learn there's a "mutation" in her genes. The classic theme from X-Men: The Animated Series briefly played over the scene, confirming her status as the MCU's first mutant.

We don't know what this means for Kamala moving forward but, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss The Marvels, Vellani revealed that the scene was added during reshoots.

"That was sort of a late surprise. We did do that in additional photography, but I think they were just waiting on the go-ahead to be able to film it," she tells the trade. "Even when we were filming it, we didn’t know if it was going to make the cut at the end of the day. So I was praying. I emailed Kevin and I was like, 'This needs to be real,' because what an honor it is to be called the first mutant in the MCU. It’s just so cool."

The Marvels doesn't elaborate on that, even with a post-credits scene [SPOILER ALERT] featuring Monica Rambeau stranded on an alternate Earth with Binary and Beast of the X-Men.

In a separate interview with Slash Film, Vellani shared her excitement for that cliffhanger before being asked if she hopes to continue telling Ms. Marvel's story in a second season on Disney+. The actress is understandably keen and went on to share her hopes for Ms. Marvel season 2 to be followed by a Young Avengers project.

"I would love for a second season. Not only Kamala has so much story left to tell, but [in] her community, I think we've established a lot of wonderful characters. Her best friends, Bruno, Nakia, Zoe, her school, her religious community, her family. I know people really responded to the Khan family very well from the movie. So I just want to explore more of that. I want to see Kamala grow up a little bit. I want to see her go to college, have a prom."

"Honestly, I'm living vicariously through this character. So every experience that I did not get because of the pandemic, I want her to get it, so I can have a prom and have a graduation. But yes, I want that slice of life to be more like Disney+ in a TV show format. Then I think it would be cool to have a Young Avengers type thing - team up, big spectacle, obviously in a movie, yeah, that would be ideal. Hopefully people can start a petition or something to get them going."

Even after The Marvels has largely disappointed at the box office, we're sure it won't be the last time we see Ms. Marvel in action. A second season seems like a safe bet given how well-received that first batch of episodes was, though with Marvel Studios scaling back on streaming content, Young Avengers may be next for Vellani.

Little did it do for both the show and the marvels. They thought they came up with a clever way to make her cool(er?) and throw fans a bone. Outside of 4 twitter fangirls creaming their panties, it achieved nothing.

@rebellion - I mean...it did introduce mutants to the MCU. So there's that.

I love what a fan she is! One of the best parts of the MCU. Hope she makes it past the reboot

bkmeijer1 - 11/15/2023, 8:48 AM
@Izaizaiza - ofcourse she gonna make it past the reboot, as there won't be one. No way they're gonna reintroduce all the characters they have introduced over that past 15 years.

The only ''reboot'' that I can see happen is that only one universe will remain (the MCU-616), which has the already introduced heroes, a few from the multiverse and the MCU-native mutants.

@bkmeijer1 - agreed. I don’t see any reboot coming.

@bkmeijer1 - Oh, I will bet dollars to donuts that Black panther, Captain, America, iron Man, black widow, etc. Etc. All be back after Secret wars. Recast.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/15/2023, 4:08 PM
@Izaizaiza - don't think we need a new Black Widow or Captain America, is we already have them in Yelena and Sam.

The other characters though, think replacing them with recasted variants from around the multiverse could be interesting.

Izaizaiza - 11/15/2023, 5:38 PM
@bkmeijer1 - it will be interesting to see how they handle everything. They have got to recast a lot of them unless they just plan to wind down the MCU when the actors age out of the roles
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/16/2023, 2:02 AM
@Izaizaiza - yeag, that's why I think they're starting with legacy characters a bit too soon. Although I guess the Young Avengers and such can stick around for a long time, and the MCU-native MCU haven't even been introduced yet

That's really sad. Those were tough lockdown years, specially for younger people.

Still think she was more interesting when she was an Inhuman tbh.

Honestly don't see the point of MCU-native mutants anymore, because they keep bringing back the FoX-Men over and over again. We're meeting multiversal versions of the X-Men (in MCU continuity) before the actual MCU X-Men, which is ridiculous-- if they even exist in the MCU at this point, which I pretty much doubt that they do now. Especially after the rumor that an MCU-native Fantastic Four seemingly don't exist either, and that the ones we'll meet in the movie will be from another universe as well.

It seems they're going to merge the existence of mutants/the X-Men through Fox's universe with the MCU, and [the MCU] will be reset with the idea that they've always co-existed. Basically along the lines of the soft reboot rumors.

But then that just makes this setup with Ms Marvel and Namor pointless.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 11/15/2023, 8:39 AM
@Kurne - Nah. I think after the reboot we'll get a brand new MCU X-Men team. All the Fox-Men actors are too old to be the X-Men for the next 15-20 years.

And I thought the rumor for the F4 was they've been trapped in another reality, but aren't FROM another reality?
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/15/2023, 8:51 AM
@Kurne - I think they're holding off on MCU-native Mutants, as they can use the multiverse in to easily bring in already established mutants.

They don't need years of introducing, as the FoX-Men movies already did that. Those Mutants will be done after Secret Wars wraps up the multiverse, and the playing field is clear MCU-native Mutants

The Box Office receipts show that this brilliant second guess retcon was more than worth it.

Cannot wait for Captain Marvel 3 🙌

Is there really a huuuge difference between mutants and inhumans?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 11/15/2023, 8:43 AM
@HammerLegFoot - yes. Mutants are born with an X-Gene and are the next stage in the evolution of humans.

Inhumans are people that were effected by the Terrigen Mists to gain powers.

Inhumans are actually closer to powered humans like Spider-Man or Hulk than mutants.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/15/2023, 8:55 AM
@HammerLegFoot - @CorndogBurglar does explain it very well. I'd even shorten it to mutants and mutates.

Mutans are born with their powers, while mutates aren't and get them later in life due to exposure to a mutagenic agent instead. Inhumans are mutates, just like Spider-Man, Hulk, the FF, She-Hulk, Daredevil, Captain America, etc.

Don't know what Ms. Marvel's born mutation is supposed to be though.
zeon00
zeon00 - 11/15/2023, 2:11 PM
@CorndogBurglar - the Inhumans are not closer to spider-man or hulk and the Inhumans are the product of genetic engineering on primitive humans homo sapient a million years ago by the Kree to create a superhuman race. The Inhumans are created out human and they a version human evolution called homo Inhumanus and even without the Terrigen mist the Inhumans far stronger & faster than humans
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 11/15/2023, 2:19 PM
@zeon00 - But.....normal humans cam be turned into Inhumans, no?
zeon00
zeon00 - 11/15/2023, 2:26 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Inhumans are not mutate they are separate race from humans
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/15/2023, 2:36 PM
@zeon00 - the pre-Terrigen transformation Inhumans are indeed more athletic and can undergo the Terrigen transformation due to Kree tampering, but by the definition of Mutates I used Inhumans kinda fall in that category too
zeon00
zeon00 - 11/15/2023, 2:40 PM
@CorndogBurglar - humans who have inhuman gene whose power are activated by the Terrigen mist and the humans who have the inhuman gene are the result by Inhumans interbreeding with prehistoric ancient humans
zeon00
zeon00 - 11/16/2023, 5:45 AM
@bkmeijer1 - inhumans gene are a different form of mutation & they are mutants butvwithout the x gene
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/16/2023, 7:19 AM
@zeon00 - that's a way of looking at it as well. I especially wonder how the MCU is gonna explain it (if they're doing Inhumans at all)

There is such a bias on this site. The Flash and Black Adam had 100 article each shitting all over them and this movie somehow doesnt get that treatment. Hmmmm, wonder why?

This character's importance is overrated. The actress is okay, but nothing that special other than her box checking abilities.
