She-Hulk: Attorney at Law's latest episode saw rapper Megan Thee Stallion make her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. Originally revealed as an Asgardian shapeshifter, the real deal showed up in a post-credits scene for a twerking session with the show's sensational lawyer turned superhero.
This is one of the MCU's biggest celebrity cameos to date, so what made the WAP singer the right choice for Jennifer Walters' latest case?
"We knew that for that story, we needed a famous, beautiful, successful woman," Head Writer Jessica Gao tells TV Line. "We were going through all the possibilities, but when it came down to it, Jameela [Jamil, who plays Titania] knew Megan from working on [HBO Max’s] Legendary together, and she brought her up."
"We were like, ‘Don’t say it if it’s not really true! Don’t tease us with this!'"
As for that twerking scene, director Kat Coiro reveals it wasn't scripted and actually happened naturally on set. "The dancing was actually added to the script on the day, because Tatiana was so excited," the filmmaker says. "She’s the world’s biggest Megan Thee Stallion fan and we were like, ‘We’ve gotta give her something,’ so they threw together this dancing scene."
Tatiana Maslany was understandably a little starstruck, but yes, that really was her pulling off those moves while decked out in a motion-capture suit.
"Yeah, that was me! That was all me," the actor laughs, saying that working with Megan "was a dream come true." Maslany added, "It was like one of my absolute top moments on set, of anything I’ve ever done. I was shaking and I was nervous, and then the music played and I was like, 'I’m in a Megan Thee Stallion music video!'"
It was a fun moment, that's for sure. Not every fan has embraced the cameo, but enlisting a star like Megan just goes to show how much of a draw being even a small part of the MCU has become. It's also generated even more attention for this series, likely cementing She-Hulk's future as a huge part of this shared world.
The first three episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law are now streaming on Disney+.
