SHE-HULK Director Kat Coiro On That Big Twist, K.E.V.I.N., Daredevil, Skaar, & Potential Season 2 (Exclusive)

Marvel Studios' She-Hulk: Attorney at Law wrapped its entertaining first season with a wild and wacky finale that pretty much no one saw coming, and we were able to sit back down with director and executive producer Kat Coiro (Modern FamilyIt's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) to talk about everything we saw in that final episode and what could come next for Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany).

Coiro helmed the first four episodes and the final two, so she was also responsible for properly introducing Daredevil (Charlie Cox) into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which was met with widespread acclaim as episode eight is currently the highest-rated installment of the nine-episode series.

In addition to breaking down bringing the Man Without Fear into the MCU, she also touches on where Jennifer Walters goes next following her final hour triumph and what her relationship status with Matt Murdock might be moving forward into Daredevil: Born Again.

Plus, we get into that big K.E.V.I.N. reveal, the debut of Skaar, whether there were any other candidates for HulkKing, possibly bringing Jennifer Lopez into a potential season two, and a whole lot more!

ROHAN: Marvel Studios is no stranger to taking big leaps, but this finale went above and beyond and subverts expectations in a way that I don't think many, if anyone, saw coming. Can you tell me more about how it came together and why this was the right ending for Jen Walters?

KAT: The concept draws heavily from the comics and from the John Byrne run, and we always knew we were going towards that ending, where she literally smashes the fourth wall and goes into the writers room and confronts Kevin. There were definitely many different versions of how we got there, and I would say one of the biggest challenges was, when you're shooting a finale, the purpose is to kind of not make sense so that she can then go and confront the writers room, you really have to have actors who trust you.

There was a moment in that lodge where I had Tatiana, and Mark, and Tim, and Jamila, and everyone was kind of looking at me like, “What is going on?” And, I was like, “Guys, it's not supposed to make sense. That's kind of the point.” It definitely was a big risk in a lot of ways, but I think it paid off really well.

ROHAN: I don't think we've ever seen a studio head poke fun at themselves, hits and misses, as gleefully as Kevin Feige did with this series and with the introduction of K.E.V.I.N. What was the initial pitch for that whole sequence and how involved was Kevin?

KAT: Kevin had a huge hand in the whole sequence and was a huge part of the creative evolution of K.E.V.I.N, and that's one thing that really surprised me coming into the Marvel world, is you think he has so many projects going on, there's no way he's so hands on, but he really is, and he was a big part of developing Kevin, and always making sure that it wasn't him, you know, that there was a separation between the man and the machine.

ROHAN: I’m a huge Orphan Black fan, so I know Tatiana is capable of having chemistry with anyone, but it really felt like the chemistry she and Charlie Cox shared in this series was special. - Is it safe to say they’re a thing, MCU official as you will, moving forward into Daredevil: Born Again

KAT: As someone who's in the room with the two of them, I think that anybody making a Daredevil series would be crazy not to capitalize on their chemistry, and on Jen and Matt's electric spark, because those two, they're both such thoughtful actors, and putting them together, as soon as I filmed the first scene with them together, I knew that it was all gonna work great, and I think they should absolutely be a couple moving forward, in my humble opinion.

ROHAN: Speaking of Daredevil, you get to reintroduce him in episode eight. What was it like getting to flip your series on its head and sort of be a mini-Daredevil reboot for one chapter?

KAT: One thing that I really appreciate about the series is it's not this action-packed, high-octane, all the time, you know, action show. It really is about the normal life of a superhero, and I felt like in episode eight, we finally got to cut loose and have real action sequences and kind of play in that genre. So, for me as a director, it was just a ball, and I was so glad that we got to explore that part of the MCU.

ROHAN: The episode ends with this huge Hulk reveal, with the debut of his son Skaar. What were the discussions around that and can we expect a lot more Hulk family adventures in the not-so-distant future?

KAT: Well, Skaar is another Kevin addition, and it sounds so funny now talking about Kevin Feige, now that everyone's seen the finale and knows that there's this there's a bot called K.E.V.I.N., but the real Kevin Feige was the one who wanted us to introduce Skaar and in this very specific way, and I remember I had pitched introducing Skaar as a toddler, because I thought it would be like baby Yoda and really cute, but Kevin has a vision that probably is connected to many stories to come, which I don't know.

ROHAN: The identity of the HulkKing reached near-Mephisto level of speculating leading into Thursday, with people suspecting characters we hadn’t even seen like The Leader or Red Hulk - was Todd always the HulkKing or did you ever play around with his identity?

KAT: No, Todd was always HulkKing, and even introducing him in Episode Four, when we introduced him on the date, we knew that he was kind of our big bad

ROHAN: I loved the show, and I'm sure you're not allowed to say anything, but where does Jen's story go next? Have you had discussions about a season two yet? And, has there been any movement on your pitch to bring your Marry Me star Jennifer Lopez into the MCU?

KAT: Well, you know how I feel, I would love to see Jennifer Lopez in the MCU. I've put that out there, because she's a real life superhero, and she really is when you're around her. You're like, “You're not human. You can't be real.,” because she's just so beautiful and powerful. In terms of, of Jennifer, I love the idea of Jennifer coming into the Daredevil series, but that's just me.

@JackRussoff3 - Probably not because She-Hulk will be in a few upcoming movies. First up will be Captain America World Order May 3, 2024.

She-Hulk is moving on into movies. First, she will be in Captain America: New World Order which already been confirmed that Leader will be with main villain. Leading to a World War Hulk movie.

Harrison Ford is set to play General "Thunderbolt" Ross, Red Hulk in Captain America: New World Order, and we now have some exciting details about what to expect from the villain.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jen show up for an episode in Born Again, but that's it for Matt's series.

And nah, no to a season 2. At the very least, a season 2 of She-hulk should not be prioritized over, for example, a season 2 of Moon Knight.

@Vigor - "If you didn't like it, you're who they're making fun of." What a lame premise to base your show off of and shows how insecure both you and the writers are.
