THE GIFTED Showrunner On That Heartbreaking Finale, [SPOILER]'s Sacrifice & DAYS OF FUTURE PAST In S3?!

The Gifted ended its second season in epic - and heartbreaking - fashion as one key member of the Mutant Underground made the ultimate sacrifice. Then, the hour wrapped up by setting up a wild season 3!

Tonight's second season finale (series finale?) saw the conflict between the Mutant Underground, the Inner Circle, and the Purifiers finally come to a head and ultimately resulted in a stunning and heartbreaking conclusion as Reed Strucker (Stephen Moyer) made the ultimate sacrifice to take down Reeva Payge (Grace Byers) once and for all, sending shockwaves all across both the mutant and human worlds.

Speaking with TV Line, showrunner Matt Nix explained the shocking decision to kill off one of their heroes and whether that was a call they made at the beginning of the season, or something that evolved naturally over the course of the year.

"That evolved over the course of the season. We knew that we wanted to do something big, but what ultimately drove that storyline was less a desire to do a shocking death and more in thinking about Reed’s character, “What is a fitting arc?” It was less interesting to say, “OK, Reed gets super powers, and now he’s another superhero!” as opposed to having Reed, who started this journey as someone prejudiced against mutants, wind up as someone who is willing to sacrifice his life not just for mutants, but for everybody. He sacrifices his life for tolerance and understanding, after starting his journey as someone who meant well but didn’t understand the values of tolerance and understanding.

The important thing to me about Reed was that he wasn’t a bad guy who learns to be good. He was always a good man, but when I think about the themes of the X-Men and what that world has always been about, it’s about expanding our understanding of what it means to include people. It’s not about straight-forward good and evil, it’s about understanding that people who are not like us are not so different after all.
"

Following Reed's sacrifice, we were treated to an epilogue of sorts as we got to see Caitlin (Amy Acker), Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind), and Andy (Percy Hynes White) mourn Reed's death; Thunderbird (Blair Redford) and Erg (Michael Luwoye) reconcile; and Eclipse (Sean Teale) and Polaris (Emma Dumont) reunite with their baby girl.

However, in typical X-Men fashion, the hour did end with a big twist as Blink (Jamie Chung) made her grand return, confirming theories about her possible survival, and subtly revealed that her portals had somehow transported her to a post-apocalyptic future, which means that if FOX - or Disney - renews the series for a third season, fans could be on the verge of getting their own small-screen Days of Future Past.

The interesting thing about Blink is that in the comics, there have been a fair number of versions of the character. The fact is, she’s manipulating dimensions, traveling via these portals. She talked in the previous episode about how when she felt her worst, she imagined going into a portal that went nowhere and being in the spaces in between. So the idea was that — although she doesn’t understand it completely either — when she gets shot and falls into that maelstrom of portal energy, she is in the spaces in between things. And that is a place that is sort of “out of time.

TVLINE | So the question is perhaps not where she is taking the others, but when?

"Where, and when, and what does it mean? It’s something that hopefully we get to explore at some time in the future, but the idea there is that she’s been taken to new places and seen new possibilities. And if nothing else, she somehow she had the opportunity to change clothes! [Laughs]"

Now, whether or not we actually get to see that potentially game-changing season three is still up in the air, but Nix does remain hopeful despite the series currently being Fox's lowest rated and least watched drama. Fortunately, The Gifted does boast fairly strong streaming numbers, so there is a decent possibility the series could find a second life on a streaming service like Hulu or Disney+ following the House of Mouse's impending acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

The show is also relatively low-maintenance, so it wouldn't necessarily be the most complicated series to integrate into the Marvel Cinematic Universe if it came down to that.

"What doesn’t work in our favor is the obvious — we would like our ratings to be higher as a primetime network show. What works in our favor is that we are a show that has had a pretty decent life on streaming. And I think beyond that, because of how the story is situated, we can stay out of the way of a lot of the larger [Marvel] universe. It’s not likely that in any short term anybody is going to be doing anything that could be incompatible with what we’ve done, if that makes sense. We don’t have versions of the X-Men running around, [and the characters we use] are not smack dab in the middle of the mythology, so we’re not stepping on anybody’s toes.

The other thing is it’s my understanding that we’re doing pretty well internationally. Emma Dumont (who plays Lorna) just went to China and there were a lot of girls who really, really wanted to hang out with her. [Laughs] Superheroes with strong emotions and action seem to travel well.

Same... it’s not nearly as good as your deadly class, umbrella academy, or doom patrol... but it’s pretty decent... and I wouldn’t mind another season.

@blitzburgh - interesting. I think gifted is slightly better than shows like arrow...
To me... the acting pacing and dialogue on the shows I mentioned is much better... and they are all more fun. Gifted gets bogged down in its storytelling and feels kinda same/same and stagnant week to week. It’s definitely a show I will watch if it gets a third season... just not a top tier comic book show for me at all.

I enjoyed it although I must say I was surprised at the choice of sacrifice. All in all a decent show that deserves a third season.

Honestly, I assumed that the Blink who showed up at the end was from an alternate timeline, and not the one who got shot.

Once again a very good and underrated show I didn't like the fact that they killed off read but I understand why

I didn't realize it was a low rated and least viewed. I enjoyed the season.

@spon - Ratings are very borderline even with delayed viewing taken into account. My guess is that they move it to Hulu next year for a final season.

Imo that's because somewhere along the line people finally figured out that even shows with low episode counts can be streamed or even syndicated if they are ended properly.
