The MCU Almost Crossed Over With STAR WARS In MARVEL'S WHAT IF...? Season 2

Since Disney owns both Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm, it seems inevitable that there will eventually be a crossover between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars.

Marvel's What If...? director and executive producer Bryan Andrews was recently interviewed by Moovy TV about the successful premiere of the animated series' second season. During their talk, Andrews shockingly disclosed that the show's creative team had ambitions to create a crossover between the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and Star Wars.

The revelation arose when the interviewer broached the possibility of more off-the-wall future What If...? installments, including possible matchups between Luke Skywalker and Dr. Strange or the Hulk and a Xenomorph.

In response, Andrews stated, "I think Kevin [Feige] really doesn’t want to cross certain streams. But we did pitch… We actually had a Star Wars/Marvel crossover."

So I think it’s absolutely doable. I just don’t know if [Feige] wants to cross those streams, but it’s really funny. Once you get to the realization of why, you go: ‘Oh, that… oh, right!’ It totally makes sense. It won’t rain on anyone’s parade. But it was just a love letter to old-school Star Wars. And it was great. And I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to do it. But we have thought about that stuff.

While Feige answered no, Andrews said, he has been able to insert easter eggs into a number of episodes, but Disney occasionally removes them.

"I have tried to put easter eggs. All these different things that Disney actually owns, but they’re really sharp about. They’re like, ‘No, no, no, no, no.’ They spot that sh*#."

However, there was a Star Wars easter egg that managed to get past Disney in season 1.

"We did sneak in a TIE Fighter… I don’t think anyone will ever be able to see it, but in the shot when Starlord T’Challa runs in and there’s spaceships around… In one of the shots, when it goes by, it’s maybe motion-blurred, but there is a TIE Fighter in there. I don’t know if you’ll ever see it, but technically it’s been painted. It’s in there. So that’s one we were able to get in.”

American animated anthology television series Marvel's What If...? was developed for the streaming platform Disney+.

Based on the same-titled 1977 comic book series from Marvel Comics, the show investigates other MCU timelines that depict what may transpire if significant events from the MCU films had happened in a different order or had a drastically different outcome.

How poor this series was handled. It couldve been a great platform in bringing in the audience on the multiverse stuff. Reading this interview is telling how much bankrupt the team is in terms of ideas

@vectorsigma - i think they should have treated it like star wars visions which has only been a success for disney. Give different animators a shot at creating a story within the multiverse of marvel.

@CaptainFlapjaks - Visions is everything I wanted What If? to be.

@CaptainFlapjaks - yeah that couldve worked.

This show feels so restricted. The good thing about visions is that it is not reliant on any characters or plot, they can just make a new story out of the genetal mythos.

If the MCU keeps rolling down the hill, I think this kind of crossover will be inevitable…

@cadunovaes01 - i always said if snyders dceu was successful we would have a marvel dc movie crossover at this point. But could constant failure make marvel push the button now that gunn is in charge at dc?
RealTurner
RealTurner - 1/4/2024, 8:41 PM
@CaptainFlapjaks - "Constant failure?" Everyone bags on Antman and yet it was the 10th highest grossing movie in 2023, Gaurdians 4th, and Marvel have a Spider-Man in there as well. The fact that Dead Reckoning is considered something of a flop and is 8th shows more about the current state of movies & cinema going than it does the "failure" of the movie itself. There's the "these movies should have done better" and then "these movies could have done better." It wasn't the second one in 2023.

@RealTurner - people are good at understanding correlations around here so people aren't likely to understand your point.

Especially when it doesn't fit the narrative they are trying to push.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 1/4/2024, 10:00 PM
@RealTurner - not everyone looks at antman.

You obviously are not including the marvels to just make your point. Add secret invasion too.
Urubrodi

@CaptainFlapjaks - "Constant failure" lol if someone read this without context would think that Marvel is just releasing crap nowadays. 2023, one of their worst years ever, still had Guardians 3, Loki and What If.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 1/4/2024, 10:10 PM
@Urubrodi - to be fair. Gotg3 was part of the "old mcu" with Gunn.

We havent seen any new generation mcu movie/series that is worth saying as successful imo.
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 1/4/2024, 10:21 PM
@vectorsigma - Lol now you wanna filter out stuff because it's part of the "old mcu", I assume then that No Way Home is included in that? Still have things like Shang Chi, Werewolf by Night, Moon Knight, Multiverse of Madness, Loki, What If... all good/great in my opinion.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 1/4/2024, 10:33 PM
@Urubrodi - it is worth the filter imo. Yeah, im including nwh in that

A lot of those movies were good in the BO, but with the large budgets, they become mild profits. So it is a big blow with The Marvels which struggled to make its budget

As for shows, aside from critical reception, we dont have other data to say whether they are successful for marvel/disney or not. I guess the fact they are not releasing stream data is telling. Ive even heard that they are realesing all of echo to "cheat" these data
Itwasme
Itwasme - 1/4/2024, 10:39 PM
@vectorsigma - not sure what you mean about them not releasing streaming data. Have you ever heard of this site called Google? You can look up all sorts of stuff on there. One thing that might work for you is going to Google before you say something like "the fact they are not releasing streaming data."
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 1/4/2024, 10:40 PM
@vectorsigma - I was focusing on the quality aspect but if we're talking solely about money and ignoring guadians 3 and no way home, multiverse of madness, thor 4 and black panther 2 all did really well with most of the rest at least paying themselves. The Marvels is by far their biggest failure.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 1/4/2024, 10:45 PM
@Itwasme - im not sure i can believe this, the methodology says

"among a balanced panel of U.S. users of the TV Time app."

Itwasme
Itwasme - 1/4/2024, 10:49 PM
@vectorsigma - it's how they measure all TV. That's what Neilson has been doing g for decades.

Or... you won't believe any Stat because it doesn't fit your narrative. That type of mentality is not really a good look, but something tells me maintaining a good reputation is not high on your list of priorities.
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 1/4/2024, 11:01 PM
@RealTurner - These movies used to be the top 3 movies every year. It’s not about them not making any money, it’s the fact that they’re getting increasingly diminishing returns. Also the Marvels lol.
Itwasme
Itwasme - 1/4/2024, 11:38 PM
@OmegaBlack13 - the Marvels wasn't even close to the worst performing CBM this year. Not a good year for CBMs as a whole so I don't get why you'd celebrate that.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 1/5/2024, 12:40 AM
@Itwasme - i was really thinking more of a worldwide data, not just us. Im not also sure how a decade old methodology applied to the streaming platforms now.

The fact disney+ has lost millions of subscribers say something. And seeing a lot of disney+ shows here, the horrible secret invasion included, doesnt give much integrity in the source
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 1/5/2024, 12:41 AM
@Itwasme - wait, did i miss something? It has the worst BO in cbms right? Add to that the big budget.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 1/5/2024, 12:49 AM
@Urubrodi - the original poster said something about "marvel rolling down the hill" and i assume what's important to disney is the money no matter the quality.

And imo, for disney, "paying themselves" is not enough after a 2b juggernaut of endgame.

And not only did they fail in the marvels this year, quantumania also did.

Also, secret invasion was horrible and panned by critics. Loki was decent for me but it doesnt feel like the general audience liked with how much clout i observed from it

It is a bad year and im still hoping they fix themselves. But i have low expectations
CaptainFlapjaks
CaptainFlapjaks - 1/5/2024, 1:06 AM
@RealTurner - okay constant failure is probably a bad way to put it. But box office success doesnt always mean critical success. In the eyes of the board of directors, sure. All they care about is profit. But ant man didnt do well critically and the marvels was just okay. Loki was great and so was guardians 3. What i was getting at is not the failure they have had but if they continue to fail like they have been lately on top of superhero fatigue setting in. When people are desperate to draw people back into theatres they will make big choices. That was my point.
CaptainFlapjaks
CaptainFlapjaks - 1/5/2024, 1:21 AM
@vectorsigma - exactly. The general audience does not look at how much money a movie is making. They look at reviews. If the movie is not getting good reviews, they will spend that money elsewhere. And dead reckoning underperformed possibly because of the budget and covid setbacks. And while there may be successes, they are not looking to make a marginal success when it comes to these cbms. They are looking for a massive profit and anything under what they predict they would consider a failure even if it made a bit of money.
CaptainFlapjaks
CaptainFlapjaks - 1/5/2024, 1:30 AM
@RealTurner - you are right, the idea of movie-going has changed. People are only willing to shell out money for event films now such as barbie and oppenheimer. They are not gonna go to see characters they barely know or care about and the general audience probably does not know kamala or monica rambeau. F4 will probably be a financial success as will xmen, and avengers 5 and secret wars. Godzilla minus one got a big opening draw because its an event film. Dead reckoning probably couldnt match the massive budget and the money lost due to covid setbacks.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/5/2024, 6:53 AM
@RealTurner - And yet everybody praises Aquaman for not being as bad of a flop as The Marvels or for being less of a flop than the three other DC movies.

There's definitely a skewed vision thing going on right now.
Itwasme
Itwasme - 1/5/2024, 8:33 AM
@vectorsigma - it's a common practice across any form of statistics. You can not believe it, but its not like you have any other Stat to counter that, so it's more like you're burying your head in the sand.
AnthonyVonGeek
AnthonyVonGeek - 1/4/2024, 8:30 PM
Why? Both Civil War and Homecoming acknowledged that Star Wars is just movies in the Marvel universe.
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 1/4/2024, 10:03 PM
@AnthonyVonGeek - In the reality of those movies that's the case. Why can't Star Wars be real on another reality?
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/5/2024, 6:55 AM
@AnthonyVonGeek - I'll bet the movie Lincoln also exists in the MCU as a movie. Doesn't mean Abe Lincoln wasn't real.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/5/2024, 7:03 AM
@AnthonyVonGeek - Also, case in point: Star Wars is a movie franchise in ET too, but ET race then shows up in the Star Wars prequels.

So maybe some version of the story made it to Earth and George Lucas decided to make a franchise out of it. One that just happened to be really really accurate.

Ooh, also! There are Star Wars references in the Indy movies. Artoo and Threepio are on hieroglyphics in both Raiders and Crystal Skull. There's even a Star Wars what if story where the Millennium Falcon rashes on Earth thousands of years ago that suggests Indy is a descendent of Han.

And in the MCU, in Captain America: First Avenger, they do cross those streams. Joe Johnston (who previously worked on the original Star Wars trilogy, the Indy movies and Howard The Duck for Lucasfilm) slipped in a line about "The Fuhrer searches for trinkets in the desert" as a direct reference to Raiders of the Lost Ark.

So technically, it's all the same universe.

Filibuster incoming, lol.
RitoRevolto
RitoRevolto - 1/4/2024, 8:35 PM
That was probably the episode this season needed because other than Nebula and Kahhori, season 2 sucked ass. I don't think them being limited by the MCU events is helping either.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/5/2024, 7:06 AM
@RitoRevolto - Honestly Kahhori sucked ass too. Nebula was good and I enjoyed the Hela one (but I am a sucker for a good training montage), but apart from that and getting more Peggy Carter, it mostly sucked again, overall.
