WHAT IF...? Season 2 Stills Reveal First Look At Strange Supreme, New Avengers, And A Christmastime Adventure

Yesterday saw the first social media reactions, for What If...? season 2 find their way online and they've now been followed by a brand new batch of stills.

In those, we see Earth's Mightiest Heroes preparing for the holidays, a new team of Avengers made of characters like Mar-Vell and Goliath, and an unexpected team-up featuring Hela and Wenwu, a.k.a. The Mandarin. Most interesting, though, is a shot showing the return of season 1's twisted "Supreme" Doctor Strange Variant.

In What If...?'s fourth episode, we visited a reality where Doctor Strange lost Christine Palmer in the crash that destroyed his hands. While the hero's story initially played out the same way as his Earth-616 counterpart, the timeline branched when the hero decided to use the Time Stone to bring back the woman he loved.

Unfortunately, Christine's death is an "Absolute Point" in time that cannot be changed in this universe. Doing so would risk the very fabric of reality itself, but that didn't stop the grieving Strange from doing what he felt was necessary.

After absorbing dark forces beyond his control, the corrupted Master of the Mystic Arts repeatedly tries to bring Christine back, ultimately dooming his reality. Imprisoned with nothing but his failings to keep him company, "Strange Supreme" is later freed by The Watcher to join his Guardians of the Multiverse.

After being returned to the remains of dimension to watch over Erik Killmonger and Arnim Zola after Infinity Ultron was defeated, the door was left open to him returning...and we now know it will happen in What If...? season 2's ninth and final episode.

On Disney+'s press site, each of the stills below is accompanied by a number identifying which specific episode they're taken from. There are no other major surprises, but Strange being in the ninth instalment confirms past reports that the finale will be titled "What If... Strange Supreme Intervened?"

Take a closer look at these new stills from the Disney+ series below (via Toonado.com).

Oh look! It's Iron Man and The Avengers! C'mon kids! It's just like Phase 4 - YOU'LL LOVE IT!!! Resubscribe to D+!!!

WHAT IF? Was a great comic that could plumb the depths of Marvel Comics decades of canon for interesting twists.

This shite it strip mining the very narrow bandwidth of the MCU to wring the last drop of milk out of that Pre Phase 5 tit.

PASS.

@Batmangina - Yeah, except for the obligatory zombie and Strange eps it's been less what if and more of the usual we know what you want even if you don't know it yet bs, which is disappointing. They literally had a beach to use and opted for a turtle sand box.

@The1st - To be honest, I still haven't found one of the Constructicons that I lost in my turtle sandbox as a kid (even though I check every damn time I visit my folks), so don't underestimate the power and mystery of the turtle sandbox!

I'm looking forward to this. I know it will be entertaining. I like the idea of the New Avengers movie. I don't like how last season SEVERLY nerfed Thanos, but everything else is cool. also, I don't like how they create brand new characters rather than introduce already existing characters, but if it's dope, then it's all good. I'll watch every episode as aI wait for Echo.

They made Mar-Vell such a lame character in the movies they have to pretend like (s)he was actually some badass hero in an alternate timeline. :/

@tmp3 - All we need is a bowl of Leung Loops (fruity ten rings), part of a complete nutrious breakfast, and we're set!

I find it funny the article points out wenwu is also known as the mandarin, when shang chi specifically points out that was a name made up by AIM in iron man 3 for their leader of the ten rings. So no, he's never known in universe as the mandarin, and marketing always calls him wenwu.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 12/13/2023, 10:29 AM
@Origame - But The Mandarin moniker was based on him. Aldrich Killian used the 10 Rings and Wenwu as a catalyst for the creation of The Mandarin. So despite him not being called The Mandarin directly, A character based on himself leading his organized crime of 10 Rings soldiers is called The Mandarin.
Origame
Origame - 12/13/2023, 10:35 AM
@SonOfAGif - yeah, but that's not him.

Let me put this another way. Superman's alter ego of Clark Kent as well as his appearance was inspired by a reporter named Walter Douglas. That fact doesn't mean Walter Douglas is also known as Clark Kent or superman.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 12/13/2023, 10:55 AM
@Origame - Let's look at Loki. Loki is known as The God of Mischief. But he portrayed DB Cooper. So in universe he wasn't called DB Cooper but he was known as DB Cooper in the media. That's what Wenwu was explaining. That the American Media called him "The Mandarin" thanks to an impersonator.
Origame
Origame - 12/13/2023, 11:41 AM
@SonOfAGif - terrible example. Loki actually assumed the role of dB Cooper. Wenwu didn't. In fact after Trevor was discovered everyone saw him as the mandarin and wenwu just kept going as if nothing happened.

It's not like dB Cooper was a different person from loki who just called himself the God of mischief then an article like this comes out saying loki aka dB cooper.

Everything about this show sucks. The animation sucks. The stories suck. The writing sucks.
Go pick up an actual what if comic and you'll see they're way better than this show.

My most anticipated episode is of the 80s Avengers, those 1600s Avengers and also the one introducing the original character.

Hopefully everything leads up to the Supreme Strange episode just like The Watcher's episodes were.
