Netflix recently set a November 19 premiere date and shared a first look at the live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, and thanks to EW's fall preview, we now have a new look at John Cho (Star Trek) as the irrepressible Spike Spiegel.

Some fans felt Cho was the wrong pick for Spike when he was first announced as having landed the role, but there's no denying that he looks the part. Whether the Netflix series manages to appease the anime's rabid fanbase remains to be seen, of course, but the first trailer should give us a much better idea of the reception that awaits the show.

Cowboy Bebop is based on the incredibly popular '90s anime by Shinichirō Watanabe, and follows a group of intergalactic bounty hunters aboard their spaceship, Bebop.

Fall TV Preview - COWBOY BEBOP
"Cowboy Bebop is an action-packed space Western about three bounty hunters, aka cowboys, all trying to outrun the past. As different as they are deadly, Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda) form a scrappy, snarky crew ready to hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals — for the right price. But they can only kick and quip their way out of so many scuffles before their pasts finally catch up with them."

We recently learned that anime composer Yoka Kano, who has worked on the likes of Vision of Escaflowne, Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex, Turn A Gundam, Macross Plus, and more, will be creating the soundtrack.

Cowboy Bebop will be exec produced and written by Christopher Yost (Thor), who will also serve as showrunner along with Andre Nemec, Josh Appelbaum, Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg of Midnight Radio; Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios; Yasuo Miyakawa, Masayuki Ozaki, and Shin Sasaki of Sunrise Inc. Watanabe is on board as a consultant.

Didn't know this was on Netflix. Guess I'm gonna have to give it a try then

@bkmeijer - wait, the fact this is from Netflix (remembering its a live action remake of an anime) actually makes you want to try it? Not sure if you noticed their track record with those.

@Origame - oh yeah I know of their track record. But for some reason I got faith in this one. Somehow it strikes me as the project where people work on it because they want as they're fans, and not just simply seeing a property that potentially could bring in more viewers and nothing more

@bkmeijer - idk. Even the creator was talking bad about this adaptation.

@Origame - I'll be honest, I haven't read anything from interviews and such. I'm solely going of promo material (which might not be the best).

It could very well end uo being bad, but I hope I'm right for once

@Origame - He didn’t say anything bad about. Basically just saying stuff along the lines of managing expectations and he’s not entirely aware of what suggestions made it in or didn’t.

He actually doesn't look too bad

@Kumkani - he looks pretty, he looks baby faced and almost has a “sunny side of things” look to his posture…. Not Spike Spiegel

@MrJosh - I mean it’s not the exact same Spike Spiegel from the anime but that’s inevitable since actors are artists not copycats. I don’t expect Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix to play the same Joker but they are both still playing Joker. I hope I like this series though. Can’t judge from a picture, but I think he looks great.. solid cast overall actually. I wonder if they’ll go for a more serialized show rather than the episodic anime. It’ll be interesting, I really hope both this and the live action Last Airbender series’ pull it off.

That’s SPIKE. As Spike as it gets.

Yoko Kanno is involved. Everything else is just icing.

(Though I wouldn't complain if there's at least one episode as bonkers as Mushroom Samba, Toys in the Attic, or Requiem for a Clown.)

@Reeds2Much - or Pierrot Le Fou

But idk how you translate that on a Netflix budget. So wild

@BlackBeltJones - I thought Pierrot's episode was called Requiem of a Clown, so my bad. But yeah, that too.

@AnthonyVonGeek - woah!!!!

This is super concerning and what I feared. Like they just listed him as a consultant but didn’t actually let him do the job. Look what Netflix did to the avatar creators.

@BlackBeltJones - I’m not clicking that because that site twists things for their own agendas. Terrible site.

And I’m assuming they’re twisting and misconstruing what he actually said from what’s probably the same interview that’s been making the rounds.
generictheeric
generictheeric - 9/17/2021, 3:45 PM
@BlackBeltJones - To be fair, the Avatar creators' departure was shortly followed by a massive deal with Paramount Plus, so it probably wasn't "creative differences" that made them leave Netflix. At least not wholly.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 9/17/2021, 5:02 PM
@generictheeric - thats true. Good point.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 9/17/2021, 5:04 PM
@DTor91 - not familiar with the site. Didn’t know they did that.

But I had read another interview where the creator said he lent advice but he wasn’t heavily involved creatively

I'll watch the first episode and see if I like it but I think I'll be sticking with the anime.

I can’t question John Cho’s passion, he’s the fan that got the job. Just gotta hope the direction, writing and Netflix dollars pull their weight.

Now that’s damn near perfect. Light years better then the light and n we got in Netflix’s death note.
