Fans of Netflix's Stranger Things have been conflicted since the end of the last season and the apparent (spoiler) death of Hopper. Even if the character isn't dead, it appears he may be "The American" that is trapped by the Russians, but many fans feel that could be Matthew Modine's character from Season 1.

Regardless of whether or not Hopper is still alive, actor David Harbour (Hellboy, Black Widow), has been adamant in saying that he is unaware of the truth, and that he is worried his character may not return. In a recent interview with The Wrap, Harbour discussed how his potential leaving the show effects him and his relationship with fellow actress Winona Ryder (Edward Scissorhands).

“For her, and me as well, we just sort of didn’t want to see each other on that day. It was very late in the season, it was the last thing I shot. And so it was just me looking up at a window. And for me, in that moment, it was sort of very easy. I mean, I did some work on what I wanted to convey.

But it was like the culmination of this three year journey with this actress that I adore, and I adore working with, and I’ve never experienced anything like the co-star working relationship I have with her. And so it was kind of the culmination of that. So in that way, it was easy to just have that be informed by what I have felt over these last three years as opposed to anything we could do in the moment.”

Continuing to explore Hopper's apparent end, the actor discusses how and why his character accepted things in their final moments, and how saving the children was bigger than the adults.

“I think that it was just about letting go. It’s always hard for Winona at the end of a season. I think she, like me, we get very attached to a season and then it’s like saying goodbye. And this was a big one. And we didn’t have each other there, we just sort of stared off. I thought it was so beautiful when I watched it put together.

I mean, it’s such a gracious moment of Hopper to nod and sort of smile and I love that about him in that moment. I love that he let go that way, that he lets her off the hook for something that she has to do for their kids. I mean, their kids are more important than them, clearly, in that moment. I love that moment.”

Its possible that Hopper will show back up in one way or another. Perhaps he really is "The American" as some theorists insist, or maybe he's trapped in the Upside Down. You know, Stranger Things have happened!

What do you guys think of Harbours comments? Do you hope to see him return to the Upside Down, or would you prefer if he kept making movies such as Hellboy and Black Widow? Be sure to sound off in the comments below!
