OBI-WAN KENOBI Star Hayden Christensen Shares His Take On How Anakin Skywalker Could Have Been Saved Sooner

Luke Skywalker managed to save his father's soul in Return of the Jedi, but could Darth Vader have been brought back to the side of the angels a little sooner? Here's Hayden Christensen's take...

Plagued by nightmares of the woman he loved dying, Anakin Skywalker was easily manipulated by Chancellor Palpatine into turning to the Dark Side in Revenge of the Sith. Feeling betrayed by the Jedi and believing that joining the Sith was the only way to save Padme's life, the Jedi Knight made a fateful decision that saw him descend into madness and evil.

By the time Obi-Wan Kenobi confronted "Darth Vader" on Mustafar, it appeared he was too far gone to be saved. Or was he?

During a recent interview with Fatherly (via SFFGazette.com), it was put to Hayden Christensen that there's a chance Anakin could have returned to the Light had he only known about his children, Luke and Leia. "It’s pretty tragic that he was unaware of his children," the actor admits. "I think you’re onto something there. But what do you think?"

It's an interesting theory. At that point, had Anakin got to see Padme give birth moments before she died, it may well have helped him come back from the darkness he'd embraced. Alternatively, Anakin may have decided to take his children on as apprentices, bringing them up as Sith either with the Emperor or after overthrowing his Master! It's hard to say.

Elsewhere in the interview, Christensen talked about donning Vader's formidable suit again. "I think that process was very important for me," the actor explained. "I needed to become that character again, physically. I just consumed as many calories as possible. I put on 25 or 30 pounds to fill out that [Darth Vader] suit."

"I try to avoid the dad bod thing," he joked. "And I was trying to maintain that Vader body after we finished. But, honestly, I pretty much just went back to my old diet. I kind of deflated after that."

Christensen has talked on multiple occasions now about his hopes to reprise the role of Anakin/Vader, whether it be in another project or his own spinoff. Lucasfilm must have noticed the overwhelmingly positive response to the villain's return, so we'd be shocked if the actor isn't given that opportunity sooner rather than later.

The final episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi hits Disney+ next Wednesday!

I think if Aayla Secura had given him some on the side he would have continued to see the benefits of the light side of the force.

Saw this and it’s definitely an interesting theory about the lazy writing for the Obi Wan show….

“Episode 4 The “A New Hope Episode“ it’s not the only episode that is mirroring a Star Wars film. They are mirroring ALL 6 films!

Episode one: main character has to leave Tatooine

Episode two: Big city planet Chase

Episode three: mustafar fight

Episode four: save the princess from Imperial base, track the rebels.

And now SPOILER if you haven’t seen the recent episode.
.
.
.
.
.
.

Episode five: empire strikes back on the rebel base Hoth style. While the transports have to get away . Could even count that final fight as a very Luke versus Vader’s on cloud city. With the whole shock twist at the end ( although the shock wasn’t that shocking we kind of knew that was coming lol)

So we are definitely going to get episode six return of the Jedi final confrontation. The saber fight we’ve been waiting for. And I hope to God they STICK THIS LANDING!!!
It’s like waiting for the ending to episode three all over again!”

I mean, there's plenty of ways anakin could've been saved. According to Lucas, if the original plan of qui gon training him happened then he wouldn't have turned to the dark side. In fact that led to an interesting fan theory where his meditation during the fight with maul showed him the future and he willingly had maul kill him to avoid messing with the will of the force.

@Origame - that is an interesting theory. Implies that Anakin had to turn to the dark side in order to bring the prophesied balance. Like to believe he also could've done that if Qui-Gon had trained him though

@Origame - Also, Lucas did The Clone Wars pretty much to explain that Ahsoka being untrusted by the Jedi council was the main reason he started to be angry with them as the whole "you are not granted the rank of master" is a shitty reason to be against them.

@FrankieDedo - It was more due to the council asking him to spy on his good friend. And said friend grooming him since he was a child. And then the head of the council wanting to kill that friend. Not being master was just an extra layer of betrayal that Anakin felt, but definitely not the main reason. Ashoka's story was just another layer of betrayal on top of the existing acts.

@TanukiTrooper - Yeah, that's right, there was the spying stuff too. Anyway, not my words, Filoni and/or Lucas said that, don't remember who specifically, but it was that (i think it was Filoni reporting something Lucas said to him)

That makes sense. His dreams were about Padme dying, but not his children. So maybe him seeing his children alive could've filled that gap in his life that he knew was coming.

Still, Luke's arc is still one of my favorites in mocie history, so I wouldn't want it any other way. Luke was essential to defeating the dark side, and that might also be why Palpatine somehow returned in IX (because Luke was dead).

Anakin could have been saved sooner if Palme had actually been even remotely concern led that in his rage he slaughtered all of the Tuskans instead of saying “to be angry is to be human”

But let’s be honest. If you watch Empire Strikes Back when Luke flees Degobah Obi WAN’s ghost says to Yoda, “That boy is our last hope”
Today replies, “No, There is another.”

That implies that Kenobi didn’t know about Leila’s birth and that she was kept a secret even from him.

What should have happened in the movie is that Yoda should have been waiting outside the delivery room and when they brought out Luke he handed him to Obi Wan. Yoda knew there was another coming, he could sense it. Obi Wan could not because Yoda was clouding his force sensitivity,

Then when Leia was born Yoda gave her to Bail Organa.
So only Yoda and Bail knew Leia was born, nobody else.
And then they wipe the memories of the medical droids.

That’s how it should have happened.

@SpaceParanoids - You forget that obi wan knows about Leia with the Disney plus series. I think what yoda knew was that leia is also force sensitive by saying there is another whereby obi wan believed leia did not inherit her fathers force sensitivity

@Vampyre75 - Unfortunately because of the bad writing of the prequels that was carried over to the Kenobi series.

And now we have to make up fan fiction to cover for bad writing.
