Neil Gaiman Briefly Comments On AMERICAN GODS Adaptation

We've heard that American Gods is heading to HBO, but it's been very quiet on the news front. Gaiman recently tweeted about the adaptation.

It appears that there is progress being made on the television adaptation of American Gods. Neil Gaiman has commented that he has been reading and tinkering with the script, and recently said he is almost done. The series-in-development, revolving around the question “are you a god if no one believes in you?” is executive produced by Tom Hanks' Playton Productions along with partner Gary Goetzman as well as Bob Richardson, and Gaiman on board as executive producer and writer.

Released from prison, Shadow finds his world turned upside down. His wife has been killed; a mysterious stranger offers him a job. But Mr. Wednesday, who knows more about Shadow than is possible, warns that a storm is coming — a battle for the very soul of America . . . and they are in its direct path.

Gaiman has been tweeting fans stating that this doesn't mean the pilot is guaranteed, but he is working on the script for the pilot right now and it's being paid for.

While it's not much, any bit of information is welcomed by fans of the book and Gaiman. At least we know that the project isn't dead in the water. What do you think? Ready for this to get moving? Think it will work as a TV series? Sound off below!

I just finished the book. It started out good but really slowed down and got boring in the middle. At the end it started to pick up again but the ending was still lackluster. I like the main character Shadow and the concept of the book is good one but the book as a whole is not that great. Makes me wonder if the people at HBO were just pitched the concept but approved it with out ever reading the book. This is one show I hope they change a lot of the story but keep the characters and concept.

If you like urban fantasy I suggest picking up the Dresden Files books they are a lot better.

My favorite fiction novel - by far. Just finished reading it again for probably the 70th time.

@deanwilkins Are you serious? What kind of books do you read? I could recommend a lot of books better then this one. I thought American Gods was ok, it was not hard to get through but thought it was pretty boring for most of it and predictable.

I loved American Gods and Anansi Boys. I'm really excited for this. Neil Gaiman is definitely my favorite author (Sandman has a lot to do with that).

@Dmon, perhaps you're just not a fan of Gaiman's work. There's nothing wrong with that, but he does have a definite style to his books, and I suppose that's why you didn't like American Gods.

@drewXdeficit I like Sandman. I just thought the book was about average. I also thought the style was about average. Maybe you could enlighten me on what that definite style is. There were parts I liked but thought it was overall boring and predictable. I mean I almost immediately knew who his father was, figured out the "Con" pretty early, though I did not figure out who the 2nd party was I thought it was going to be someone else. And I had a pretty good idea what happen to the kids. But like I said earlier I did like the character of Shadow though he could have been just about anybody, meaning he was pretty bland so the reader could more easily identify with him. And I also liked the concept.

I enjoyed the hell out of that book. Can't wait to see it on the small screen.

His Graveyard book was waaaaay better. I agree with Dmon. Started out well, bloated middle, awful ending.

I like Gaiman's stuff but not sure about an American Gods show. I thing Good Omens would have made a better weekly show.

American Gods was a decent read, but I think for the purposes of translating it to a show that it wont be 100% faithful to the storyline, only to the concept itself, in which case I think it would make a great show... New Gods vs. Old Gods fighitng for "worshippers" here in America... keep Shadow in there as the human perspective, it could be great... funny I always pictured Jonah Hill as Internet and Richard Riehle as Odin...
