We know that Todd McFarlane is currently hard at work developing a long overdue Spawn reboot but what isn't clear is which studio will ultimately distribute the movie. Well, it sounds like the writer and director is hoping it will be Sony as that would potentially open the door to the character possibly crossing paths with Venom. Whether or not that's a realistic hope is, of course, another matter!
"Here’s a big 'What If?' What if Sony distributes Spawn? Then is it possible that in the future Sony could have a crossover with Venom and Spawn? It’s possible," the creator teased. "So, I will be presenting that possibility to the Sony executives when we get ready." The problem is that Spawn is an Image Comics property and Venom is a Marvel one, meaning such a crossover would likely be held back by a plethora of legal issues as putting them in the same movie would cause some headaches.
"My conversation with them would be, why wouldn’t you? Here’s what I know. Let’s say Venom is huge — I hope it is — then no matter who distributes Spawn, the first thing you will see in every trailer will be, 'From the co-creator of Venom.' So, then my question to Sony is, why would you let one of your competitors use that line, given that it was your effort that made Venom work? Your money that made Venom work? Your marketing that made Venom work? I think it’s worth asking, then, what happens if they both work? And then what happens ten years down the line, when they want to do a Spawn/Venom crossover and they get the guy who helped create both those characters to direct it? Might be kind of cool."
He makes a lot of valid points and it would be undeniably awesome to see these two characters cross paths. The vast majority of fans would obviously prefer to see Venom meet Spider-Man but that seems unlikely to happen as of right now so who knows what the future holds in store for Eddie Brock! What we do know is that we'll see the symbiote in action this October and Spawn in the next few years.
