VENOM Producer Reveals Whether Or Not The Sequel Will Be An R-Rated Adventure

There's been a lot of backlash surrounding Sony's decision to make Venom PG-13 and now producer Avi Arad shares his thoughts on whether or not the sequel will take things in an R-Rated direction...

Leading up to the release of Venom, many of the people involved with the movie indicated that it would end up being R-Rated and when the PG-13 Marvel Comics adaptation hit theaters, they all pretended that they never said that would be the case! So, with Carnage confirmed as the villain of the sequel, an R-Rating seems inevitable, right? Unfortunately not according to producer Avi Arad.

Despite Cletus Kasady being well-suited to an R-Rated setting, Arad actually believes that the character can still be done justice without one, something many comic book fans are bound to take issue with.

"When you hear Carnage, the only thing you can think of is R," the producer said. "But, if you know his story, if you really know the comic, there’s no R here. He’s a tortured soul. It’s not about what he does, because we never have to show the knife going from here to there, and the blood is pouring. What you have to show is, what is the motivation? Was he born like that, or [is he] someone we should feel for, because if you succeeding in making a villain someone you can feel for, jackpot."

Do you think the Venom sequel will be able to do Carnage justice without an R-Rating? The first movie certainly managed to get across Venom's love of eating brains with blood and guts splattering across the screen so it's certainly possible. As always, share your thoughts in the comments section below.

I'm not sure I'd see any studio looking at a PG-13 movie doing pretty well and thinking "awesome, let's do the next one R". The standard studio approach is to drastically increase the budget, retread the same story, and then be disappointed with the lower box office return.

(And no, Logan doesn't count. You know better than to suggest it, I hope.)

@Spock0Clock - the foundation for the sony mcu is pg13. venom worked and made money so... what the producer was trying to say is there is no point for a r-rated film if you can create the same intensity.

he has always quoted "the dark knight" as a reference. joker is a r rated villain and nolan was able to bring the character to life within pg13.

@Spock0Clock - Logan was only made because hugh jackman took a huge pay cut, the movie budget was lowered, and no producer from fox gets merchandising profits.

For Sony, Avi Arad is the 1 of the top producers that fund their films and he does earn merchandise profit. Business situation is differ thats why a deadpool/logan type of film will never be made at disney or sony.

@mastakilla39 - really? because Disney has never done an R movie?

@Trimount - Disney has "released r-rated" films and had their subsidiary studios make r-rated film but "disney" has never made an r-rated film.

James Mangold said it best “The real thing that happens when you make a movie rated R, behind the scenes, is that the studio has to adjust to the reality that there will be no Happy Meals. There will be no action figures. The entire merchandising, cross-pollinating side of selling the movie to children is dead before you even start. And when that’s dead, it means you’re making a grown-up movie.”

Do you honestly think Disney will say "No" to merchandise? Deadpool is already getting re-released in theaters with a PG-13 rating for "kids and family"....seems like Disney is already forcing Fox to test the waters.

@mastakilla39 - my point was just that Disney has released R rated movies that other studios under their umbrella made. I know that even Iger said they had no plans for R Rated Marvel movies

Yea, well if YOU know his story, if you really know the comic, you know there should be a Spider-Man here.

I don't even need to read the article and I can tell you that the answer is a "NO".

If you wanna make it R, make it R. All this indecisiveness is kinda boring to be honest.

I'd really prefer if people stopped saying that this movie was definitely "bad, but also fun".

It was bad plain and simple. That whole first hour was unapologetically rushed, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed... I really don't know how they agreed to do this, the CGI, or rather use of CGI with Eddie's transformation was so cheap and only highlighted more with the PG rating.

Also, I thought a movie being "bad but fun" was scrutinised around here.

It depends on who gets to have the fun.

@Kurne - To be fair, if it's like The Room for instance, it's still bad and unintentionally fun and funny.

Still a bad movie.

@Kurne - I watched a pretty good porn video, last night. Had a lot of fun. Critically though? Terrible. Worse than Venom. Yet even more fun. Is that not irreconcilably unfathomable?

@Kurne - Look out, the fun police are out in force! 🤪

Guess what, dude. I saw the movie - brought my GF and and a friend, paid like $40 for all our tickets and bought concessions and shit too. We all had fun, the packed theater and me and my guests were laughing through out. We all had fun. The movie was bad over all, but we had fun. So, slap the cuffs on me I guess.

No superhero film needs an R rating, unless you want to drop F bombs every 5 seconds or your name is Garth Ennis.
The sequel will be fine just pushing the rating like this one. Imply but don't show.

@Kleytus - Logan and Deadpool was awesome for an R Rated movie and Logan should be Oscar best picture worthy
Kleytus
Kleytus - 10/9/2018, 3:51 AM
@zeon00 - Deadpool uses the R for shock value, dick jokes, shit and giggles. It was awesome? Sure. Necesary? Nope.

Same for Logan, You could have told the same story with the same gravitas with half the blood.

I'll say it again, I love horror and gore, if they want to put it there, I'm all for it, but I doubt that anyone can convince me that i'ts necessary, or even better because of it.
Just different.

Also sorry but no, Logan did not deserve an Oscar. The third act was subpar and the Evil dumb twin was terrible in every aspect.
It should have been Sabretooth.
Omega

@Kleytus - But do you know what they took his evil twin as the villain though? read about it if you didnt saw that in movie, his twin was representation of the part that was in Logan, inside of him,the savage animal that he was trying to escape,He is literally fighting his inner demons.
