Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was a smash hit upon release, selling millions of copies and receiving glowing reviews. The highly anticipated sequel to Insomniac Games' web-slinging blockbuster became the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game over a 24-hour period, selling more than 2.5 million copies in just one day. It sold more than five million copies in 11 days and was just recently revealed to be the best-selling game of October in the United States.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was also one of this year's highest-rated games with a 90 Critics' Score on Metacritic and a 9.1 from users.
With The Game Awards just a few weeks away, nominees were recently announced and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has been nominated in seven categories, including Game of the Year:
There's no debate that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was one of this year's best games, but is it the Game of the Year? It faces some stiff competition including Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3, Remedy Entertainment's Alan Wake 2, Capcom's Resident Evil 4 (a remake), and Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. Wonder and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
As far as the other categories, Innovation in Accessibility is an interesting one. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 expanded on the accessibility features of the previous game by introducing Challenge Level Modifiers to customize difficulty settings and Shortcuts that allow players to assign a variety of options to the Left or Right D-pad buttons. In December, Insomniac will continue to expand on the accessibility features with Audio Descriptions, a Screen Reader, and Captions.
Yuri Lowenthal is also up for consideration for Best Performance for his role as Peter Parker. Lowenthal was widely praised for his motion-capture performance and voice acting, especially as Parker becomes entangled with Venom.
The other categories are all pretty straightforward and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has a decent shot of winning any of them. Fans can tune into The Game Awards 2023 when it streams live on Thursday, December 7, 2023. The show is free to watch and will stream across all major digital, social, and gaming platforms, including YouTube, Twitch, and X/Twitter.
Fans can also have a say in which games will win awards. Winners are determined based on a blended vote between the voting jury of global media and influencer outlets (90%) and public fan voting (10%). Voting can be done on The Game Awards website.
