LEGENDARY PICTURES OPTIONS FILM RIGHTS TO EA AND BIOWARE’S MASS EFFECT

Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced that Legendary Pictures, whose successful co-productions include The Dark Knight, 300, Clash of the Titans, The Hangover and Watchmen, has acquired theatrical feature film rights to the hit videogame franchise, Mass Effect. The project will also fall under Legendary's co-production and co-financing agreement with Warner Bros., who will distribute the film worldwide. The producers are in discussions with Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, Thor) to draft a screenplay based on the epic science fiction game series. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce the film with Avi and Ari Arad. BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk will serve as executive producers, as will Mass Effect executive producer Casey Hudson.

BioWare’s epic science fiction series takes place in the year 2183 and follows Commander Shepard of the SS Normandy who leads a team on a mission to defeat an ancient alien race that invades the galaxy every 50,000 years, wiping out all organic life. The most recent game in the series, Mass Effect 2, was released in January of 2010, and earned rave reviews from critics worldwide.*

“Mass Effect is a tremendous property ripe for translation to the big screen,” said Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary Pictures. “Mass Effect is a prime example of the kind of source material we at Legendary like to develop; it has depth, compelling characters and an engaging back story. This coupled with Avi and Ari producing and the skills of a great team adapting the screenplay, are the start of turning this smash videogame based property into a successful feature film.”

“We are thrilled to be working with Legendary,” said producer Avi Arad. “EA and BioWare are terrific partners who have created a brilliant piece of fiction with a universe filled with amazing aliens and technology. More importantly, though, they created a parable whose conflicts mirror the ones we currently face in our own world. This story emphasizes the need for all cultures to learn to work together. All this magic is presented in a fast paced action-adventure that makes for the best kind of movie experience.”

“At BioWare, we’ve always thought of Mass Effect as having the depth, emotion and plot twists perfectly suited for an adaptation to a motion picture,” said Casey Hudson. “With Legendary and Avi and Ari Arad attached, we believe that the Mass Effect movie will be an extraordinary entertainment event that realizes our vision for the franchise and thrills fans.”

Pat O’Brien, VP of EA Entertainment added “The mission of EA Entertainment is to take key EA properties and find additional ways to bring these properties to people. We can’t think of a better fit than Mass Effect and we couldn’t be more excited to bring Commander Shepard’s adventures to the silver screen.”

* Mass Effect 2 is the second highest rated game of all time on the Xbox 360® platform according to Metacritic.com.

Wow this is freaking awesome news! This is probably the best gaming franchise I have played and I always thought it would be perfect for a movie. Now I just hope they do a good job.

What a coincidence, I happen to be working on a film cast for both games :)

They'd definitely need to cut a few unnecessary characters out, and maybe combine a few of the quests to be on the same planet or something.

I'm curious to see which way they'll go, in canon terms. Would Shepard be male? Female? Black? White? Paragon? Renegade?

But Mass Effect 2 is one of my all time favorites, right up there with God of War 3.

@Tyler - Because of that very question I wonder if it would be better to just make a new story in the same universe they created

It'll be a lot like the game, because of all the videos in the game, but who cares...will still be good. And for those who haven't played it, they'll like it none the less...both ME 1 and ME 2 were great.

I've never played this. I don't understand why they haven't made a Legend of Zelda or even Metroid movie yet.

They better not cast Shepard by the way the default Shepard looks. Hate the way he looks by default.

Mass Effect 1 and 2 are two of the greatest games
EVER made!..They have to be really careful NOT to make a crap movie..Since the PLAYER makes the decisions
in the game weather to be good or bad..they can go in
ANY direction!..But I'm sure he will be the HERO!

I just hope MIRANDA will be in it!! and THANE! and of course Miranda has to be played by Yvonne Strahovski!!

she VOICED Miranda for god sakes and SHE can ACT (chuck) and she's HOT!!

I'm a colossal fan of the series, and it ranks as one of my favorite games of all time. Still, it doesnt scream "movie" to me. A huge part of the appeal of the series is the player taking control of the protagonist. The decisions made are truly yours, and the character you create is your own.

That being said, it is a rich story, and they can probably transfer all the visual designs straight from the game's art. No need to change perfection.

Awesome! Can't wait for a Halo adaptation as well! There is a lot of potential blockbusters in video games these days, I must say. With the likes of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Infamous, and Alpha Protocol even, there is a lot of special effects extravaganzas to enjoy. :)

I wonder if they'd consider doing a movie about the First Contact War or the novels...that way they wouldn't have to deal with all the potential fan outrage from the movie having a set path. I still would like to see the characters of the games make it onto the big screen though. The games are so movie-like already. The epic scale, rich characters, detailed backstories, epic score/music, etc.

Bioware's personal involvement in the film, going by this article, is a good sign that the film could be a faithful transition. We'll see how it goes.

Oh

My

GOD!!!! yes!

One of my favorite game series! I rank it up there with Zelda (my favorite series)

As for actors, I know I will get some hate for it, but what about Sam Worthington for Shepard?

I know I trash worthington a lot, but this is one of the few roles I think he could pull off...him or Jensen Ackles ;) lol

As long as Uwe Boll doesn't direct it, I think it will be okay. Prince of Persia looks like it could be the first non-terrible game movie, but I've got my fingers crossed.

Well Miranda looks just like Yvonne Strahovski (you can tell) just with a different hair color (brunette). It's pretty much a given, if they do put her in it. I wonder where they are going to start, if they start from the first game, she won't even be in the film with all those characters from the first. I just want to see Garrus and Thane, I don't even care if anybody else isn't in it. I mean, Jack would be cool too, but there's a lot of characters to fit in...which would be tough.

If the budget is high, this will turn out well.

I also wonder who could possibly play Commander Shepard. He looks familiar...

i really want this to get made, and i hope its awesome, because the games are definately fantastic...some of the best games out there. i just don't see how they can do it justice in a movie. they'll have to leave a LOT of things out, because the stories and plot points in these games are very deep and intricate.

i REALLY hope they can pull it off...but i'm skeptical.

I love Mass Effect one of the best Xbox 360 games out there, I played through the first one so many times my Girlfriend was getting irritated I thought she was going to break my disk...lol

this has so much potential it's ridiculous, I have faith that PoP will be the first awesome VGM but if they don't F ME up it will top PoP, ME and PoP are in my top 10 fav game franchises but ME has more potential for being adapted to live action with less changes from the game and to be more accurate for fan base then PoP does.

Kind of stupid taking games that were just as good as a movie experience (only better because you controlled everything) and making them an actual movie. Like taking Gears of War and making a movie out of it, which I think they're doing. That property gains nothing as a movie. Same with Resident Evil. The scope of Mass Effect is so large, they'd be better off making it a television series ala Battlestar Galactica. A movie would be weak as hell and it likely going to be.
