Regardless of Sonic's appearance, the first trailer for
Sonic the Hedgehog didn't exactly point to it breaking the video game movie curse. However, most of the backlash was aimed at the titular character's design and Paramount Pictures was clearly shocked that the response on social media was one of ridicule (something which wouldn't bode well for the movie at the box office).
Well, the movie has since been delayed and Sonic is being completely overhauled.
Someone who doesn't appear to be a fan of that is Jim Carrey, as he was recently asked about the change at the TCA panel for his Showtime series
Kidding.
"Sometimes, you find the collective consciousness finds it wants something and then when it gets it: 'I just wanted it, I didn't care about it. I just jumped on the bandwagon.' Ownership of anything is going out the window for all of us."
In other words, he doesn't think it's healthy for fans to be able to decide on something as big as this, and, well, he makes a pretty good point. After all, it's surprising that a billion dollar studio would go back to the drawing board with a character like this just because of what people were saying on social media.
What do you guys think? Did Paramount make the right decision to redesign Sonic?
