SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Star Jim Carrey Weighs In On Fan Backlash And The Titular Character's Redesign

When the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog was released, fans made it clear that they weren't happy with Sonic's new look. Now, with the character being redesigned, Jim Carrey has weighed in...

Regardless of Sonic's appearance, the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog didn't exactly point to it breaking the video game movie curse. However, most of the backlash was aimed at the titular character's design and Paramount Pictures was clearly shocked that the response on social media was one of ridicule (something which wouldn't bode well for the movie at the box office).

Well, the movie has since been delayed and Sonic is being completely overhauled.

Someone who doesn't appear to be a fan of that is Jim Carrey, as he was recently asked about the change at the TCA panel for his Showtime series Kidding. "Sometimes, you find the collective consciousness finds it wants something and then when it gets it: 'I just wanted it, I didn't care about it. I just jumped on the bandwagon.' Ownership of anything is going out the window for all of us."

In other words, he doesn't think it's healthy for fans to be able to decide on something as big as this, and, well, he makes a pretty good point. After all, it's surprising that a billion dollar studio would go back to the drawing board with a character like this just because of what people were saying on social media.

What do you guys think? Did Paramount make the right decision to redesign Sonic?

Even if you change Sonic's design it still looks like a bad movie, and the people who complained about the design aren't gonna see the movie now that it's been changed. Feels like a waste of Paramount's resources & there's gonna be a lot of overworked/under-paid VFX artists to change it. Jim Carrey looks ok doing his Jim Carrey-schtick. Dude was in one of the best films of all time with The Truman Show though.

@tmp3 - how do you know the movie bad huh answer that

@chaney504 - he specifically said the movie looks bad. Looks being the key word here. He knows it looks bad because he saw the trailer and it looked bad to him. Trailers are the first impression of a movie you get and if that isnt impressing you then the movie itself probably won't.

@tmp3 - Underrated flick. The ending is great! 😁

This is a case by case basis sort of thing. I don't think fans should be able to raise Hell and have something changed (there will always be a group of people trying to get something changed).

However, in this particular case, the creators took a chance by redesigning a character that has essentially not changed since he was introduced, and people didn't like it. I'm with the people on this one. I don't think it would have gone over well if they kept that design for the movie's release, but now that's ANOTHER risk they're taking.

Do you risk releasing a movie as-is and hope you make $$ on it? Or do you put more money in to re-design the character, and hope you make enough with the improvements to cover the increased cost? There have been several films in recent years that dumped a lot into re-shoots that didn't end up working out in the end financially.

@4N6 - Yeah I think sonic looked like ass in this one so the change is welcome.

If you were creating something new, sure. But if you are working in someone else's universe that has a huge fan base and then do something stupid like making the main character look like an offbrand version of itself. Then no.

He would have a point of Paramount decided NOT to change it, but they did because they knew the [frick]ed up and they knew they put the film's box office at risk.

This movie will be a lesson on "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should"

The looks of both characters suck.

I'm glad they listened and heard the fans. I just wish they could lose campy, crazy Carrey and replace him with Danny DeVito or Kelsey Grammar as Eggman instead. Watching the trailer, Carrey hammed it up to 11 like he did Riddler. Ugh.

Social media is just one big test audience for creators ... nothing they haven’t done before in the past, just free and on a much larger scale.

That's kind of a veiled shot at the director. You had like a zillion hours to craft, analyze, and re-analyze the design of that damn hedgehog. Have confidence in your vision! My best example is Heath Ledger's Joker make-up. At first I hated it. But the performance was so awesome, that I just accepted it, and got over it.

@WAKANDABATMANFOREVER - I think the big difference between Ledger's Joker and this Sonic is how many times they've appeared on film.

The first time we saw a live-action Joker (TV '66 and or/ movie '89) his look was mostly faithful to the comic version. Since then we've seen him interpreted a variety of different ways but it's worked because they started with the original presentation and tweaked it from there.

On the other hand, this is Sonic's first go-round so people are expecting him to look like the character they've been intimately familiar with for many years. A redesign right out of the gate is way too jarring. Give the audience the Sonic they know and love and save the changes for the next film.

I kinda agree with the guy. Its the same with Game of Thrones. Season 8 sucks, but the fans should just take whats given

Sounds like Carey himself is embarrassed by the movie and this is his chance to disavow any responsibility for it's tanking, if it tanks. The studio was still early in on the FX when the first trailer came out, and a fully CGI character is the easiest to replace with a redesigned character since the character wasn't on set, all it costs is a bit of development time and a whole lot of rendering time. The story and the pacing and the totality of the film isn't significantly different just because you refine the design of Sonic.

Other than the design I think the sonic movie could be fun but then again I said the same thing about captain marvel and that shit was boring

He's not wrong. I don't think changing Sonic's design is going to make much of a difference in the box office. The movie still looks like shit, and if it's recieved poorly, then people are not going to bother seeing it regardless. In other words, the team is just wasting their time and resources to appease people who will probably not return the favor. I still think it's really honorable for them to do that though.

In principle, I kinda agree, but filmakers also gotta make it a priority to be keenly aware of the fanbase and their expectations of the characters and can thus avoid this needless backlash.
I actually DO appreciate the fans having some sway simply because a whole lotta films based on comics and popular Sci-Fi/Fantasy have come out in the last 20 years as technology enables the impossible to be within reach.
The studios and directors have often tarnished the roots of several characters just to put their own spin on the mythos, whereas so many of us just want accurate portrayals brought to life in fantastic and creative ways without needless distortion.

Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films -great, but fall short on so many things, especially in how they characterized Peter Parker and MJ. Seems the director injected too much of his personality, not that a director can't do this with characters, just doesn't seem right when it's for a 50-year-old character who's quite different. Now Spider-Man movies ever since have recognized that Peter Parker should be much more lively than Raimi's version.

X-Men movies. Bryan Singer wanted his own spin and changed some things up but eventually realized how easy it is to make characters look like they do in the comics and therefore please even more of the fans.

Ridley Scott, great director, did something I wished for when I saw Gladiator in 2000: made a movie about MOSES. But he injected his own atheistic worldviews into characters like Moses and Pharaoh, which...dealing with incredibly religious characters from the ancient Middle East/Egypt, stuck out like a sore thumb, and the movie generally sucked eggs. A story as well-known as that of MOSES, ya just don't screw with it like that, same with Darren Aronofsky's bizarre NOAH film, although to be honest, that still betrays some clever filmaking and a great score by Clint Mansell.

So yeah...filmakers, when dealing with super popular characters and stories should absolutely pay attention to expectations.

This is something I've thought of as well. I definitely wasn't a fan of the design, but I have my own reasons for not wanting to see this movie, the design being the last of them. I have to ask, are the people that cried foul over this really going to pay the money to see it now that they've vowed to correct their "mistake"? My guess os, Probably not. The real lesson here is, never apologize to the mob.

They should have just CGI'd the whole thing.

If they would have done it right the first time, then there wouldn't be an issue. I'll at least see it now, wasn't planning on it before lol. Also everyone watch Kidding! Jim Carrey should have won an Emmy for Jeff Pickles!
