How does Activision's latest entry into the X-Men's video game history match up to its predecessors? You know what to do.

Given Activision's rich history with the X-Men franchise, I was completely geeking out over this game when I saw how awesome it could be. Being able to create your own mutant? Excellent. Choose your own powers? Uncanny. Working alongside/fighting all sorts of muties both X-Men and Brotherhood alike? Astonishing. And finally, deciding which side of the war you want to be apart of? Fantastic.

And I'm sorry to say, but I'm a little deflated.

Right out of the gate, you have to choose from 3 different character templates instead of creating and customizing your own UNIQUE character. I went with the Purifier who seems to be a little hesitant of becoming the very thing his father sought to destroy.

The game has few selections when it comes to power sets. Energy blasts, shadow manipulation, and density control. I went with the energy blasts. Gotta say, I was supremely let down with the variety of moves available. There's no melee available for energy blasts, it's all ranged attacks which don't work most of the time.

L to R: Shadow Manipulation, Energy Blasts, and Density Control

The voice acting is done quite well, but I noticed a few glitches in the game when a cutscene came on. The talking cut out for a split second and resumed wherever the word cut off. Could have just been a disc error or it could be something wrong with the game itself.

Something else I found difficulty getting past was how little I cared about or reeled in to any missions. Just didn't get the same feeling as a Legends game.

The aspects of the game I enjoyed the most was being able to fight alongside some of your favorite mutants, such as Cyclops, Quicksilver, Gambit, Emma Frost, Iceman, Nightcrawler, etc. And the artwork.

I'm not sure Activision was the best choice for such a stellar idea. A better company like BioWare or someone else with a knack for creating a great real-time RPG could have knocked this one out of the park.

If I were you guys, I'd rent this before deciding on a purchase or not.

Nipple-o-meter: 5.5 out of 10

Hm, wish it would've turned out better. I'll still play it, albeit by renting it though. I was intrigued by the core gameplay. Because I myself am getting into the game industry soon, and have a side project that is similar only in the choose powers aspect.

Details on the game have been out for a long time, including how powers work. Tisk tisk.

I'm playing it right now, and its kind of... I dunno, lack luster? I agree with the review. I redboxed it, and am super glad I didn't pay 60 bucks for it.
