UPDATE: Warner Bros. Discovery wants to quickly quell any bad press for its upcoming Wonder Woman game and they've released a new statement that denies that the job listing was specifically for the Wonder Woman game.
The company told IGN, "Wonder Woman is a single-player action-adventure game set in a dynamic open world. This third-person experience will allow players to become Diana of Themyscira and introduce an original story set in the DC Universe while also featuring the Nemesis System. Wonder Woman is not being designed as a live service game."
The original story follows below.
The upcoming Wonder Woman game from Monolith (Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War) has been kept under wraps ever since its presentation at the 2021 Game Awards.
And despite concept art leaking back in August we never actually received a new look at Monolith's Wonder Woman game at this year's Gamescom.
However, another leak (of sorts) about the game is hitting the rounds, bringing news that is guaranteed to provoke conflicting feelings.
A recent job posting on the Warner Bros. Discovery website suggests that the Wonder Woman game will be released as a game-as-a-service (GaaS).
The job posting is specifically for Monolith and its Wonder Woman games and lists the position as Lead Software Engineer of Gameplay.
When the job posting lists the experience that Monolith is looking for in potential candidates, it reads "Experience helping maintain a live software product or game." There are probably a lot of former and current Crystal Dynamics employees looking for work after the Avengers GaaS video game flamed out.
This is consistent with statements made recently by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav during an earnings call, in which he claimed that the firm will be shifting away from single-player focused releases and focusing entirely on the battle pass/games as a service model.
Zaslav specifically referred to Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Batman, and Mortal Kombat as potential $1 billion gaming franchises if they adapted the Gaas model.
Said Zaslav, "Our focus is on transforming our biggest franchises from largely console and PC based with three-four year release schedules to include more always on gameplay through live services, multiplatform and free-to-play extensions, with the goal to have more players spending more time on more platforms."
"Ultimately we want to drive engagement and monetisation of longer cycles and at higher levels," he continued. "We are currently under scale and see significant opportunity to generate greater post purchase revenue."
According to the 2021 teaser video, Wonder Woman is called back to Themyscira to fight alongside old foes and protect the island from a mysterious threat.
There's currently no release date for the game, but stay tuned, as gamers believe that once Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League launches, WB will turn its attention to marketing Monolith's Wonder Woman title.
The Suicide Squad game was previously delayed from its original 2022 release date to February 2024 after fans decried the debut trailer's uninspired gameplay footage and the reveal of a cosmetic-focused Battlepass system.
Recently, the game's marking campaign ramped back up with new footage that showed more varied gameplay between characters, however, the Battlepass elements still seem to be present.
