VIDEO GAMES: MARVEL AVENGERS ACADEMY Shutting Down At End Of Year; Will Remain Playable Until 2019

TinyCo's Marvel Avengers Academy is shutting down. The freemium mobile game is no longer available for download or accepting any new purchases, and will be closing for good in February 2019.

Players of TinyCo's freemium mobile game Marvel Avengers Academy were greeted with a heartbreaking message this week; the Academy will be closing at the end of 2018.

Although the game is essentially shut down (no longer available for download and no longer allowing any new game purchases), Marvel Avengers Academy will remain open until February 4, 2019, for those who already own it. This will allow current players to finish up any remaining tasks. To help, TinyCo has given all players 2500 Shards and other materials for free which can be used to finish missions, quests, and more. Hopefully, this will provide some sense of closure for those who have stuck with the game since launch.

Launched in 2016 for mobile devices, Marvel Avengers Academy was a collaborative partnership between TinyCo and Marvel games. The game tasked players with building the ultimate Super Hero academy and populating it superheroes who have been reimagined as students who are developing their powers.

In an in-game announcement post, TinyCo thanked the Marvel Avengers Academy community and called shuttering the game a "very difficult decision." On the bright side, the developer said it's a decision that "will allow us to better focus on new and innovative games for our fans and community."

TinyCo is actually owned by Jam City, the studio behind Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, another mobile game that launch in April and reportedly grossed over $90 million in revenue. Jam City recently entered a deal with Disney to develop new mobile games based on Disney's iconic Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios franchises. This includes a new mobile game inspired by Frozen 2, which hits theaters November 22, 2019. So despite the shuttering of Marvel Avengers Academy, it seems TinyCo will still have plenty of work in the future.

For Marvel fans, there are still plenty of other mobile games to choose from, including Marvel Contest of Champions, Marvel Future Fight, Marvel Puzzle Quest, and Marvel Battle Lines

I played around with it when I first got a smartphone, and it was just a relentless time-sink. That said, there was some remarkably fun and interesting design choices for the characters. I wouldn't hate seeing this kind of thing as an animated series or something.

@Spock0Clock - What was the object of the game?

@Imfunnyhow - There are lots of free-to-play microtransation type games like it. You would assign little tasks for the characters you had unlocked (they took anywhere from 30 seconds to a few hours), and over time got new buildings to give you new tasks to unlock new characters. I'm not sure there was an end-game to it, but after a while you would have a university (somewhat customized, as you could decorate it and plan it out a bit), with a bunch of young-adult-Avengers wandering around it.

As far as I can tell, most of the game was built around exclusive unlocks tied to events, and the only real way to complete the events was to buy tokens with real money.

Maybe worth noting that I think the voice acting was pretty solid. There was certainly a degree of charm to it.

Is this because of the Disney fox acquisition?

I never got into mobile gaming except playing a gameboy emulator which is obviously different.

One less "All Marvel"/Avengers mobile game, the better. Go back to making solo hero action mobile games similar to Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem, Uncanny X-Men: Days of Future Past & even some of the movie game adaptations like Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon, Iron Man 2 & 3, Thor: Son of Asgard & Thor: The Dark World. Give us a side-scroller Daredevil game, Doctor Strange, Black Panther or an Iron Fist fighting game similar to Batman: Arkham mobile games. How about a new Punisher first person shooter?

Same with DC. No more Injustice/Justice League/entire DC Universe/Batman (that's right, I said no more Batman) mobile games. Wonder Woman & Aquaman are movie stars, so give them solo mobile adventures.

I played it since Day 1 and I got to say it was on its last legs ever since they updated the game from a sorta fighting game instead of a world building/character recruiting game. I enjoyed collecting all the different Marvel characters and creating a world for them to interact in, but their customer service was crap and it became clear TinyCo/Jam City cared about their other IPs as the game progressed into a Pay-2-Win game (I wouldn’t called it a freemium, it was cleared they needed the $). I wished it would have made it to the potential Endgame movie event and then shut down but oh well. I feel terrible for all the people who lost jobs there, especially during the holidays, and I hope they find jobs quickly.

Well shit I'm actually kind of sad about this. Have some good memories attached to playing it when it first came out with my girlfriend at the time. Haven't played it in at least two years, but sad nonetheless. Pouring one out for the Academy

Gameloft’s Spider-Man Unlimited will be shutting down in March of ‘19, but in-app purchases will remain available until that time in spite of there being no new content produced.

I was on that game’s #1 alliance and the game’s economy became downright gross after Vivendi purchased Gameloft.

Marvel Strike Force is pretty enjoyable. Didn’t see that one listed.

This game sucked anyway. Please try harder at making a good marvel game. And can we also drop the ISO collecting bullshit too...?
