Originally expected to
sunset at the end of the year, the servers for
Marvel Heroes Omega have officially been shut down on all platforms (PC, Xbox One, and PS4). Releasing an official statement on Twitter, developer Gazillion Entertainment confirmed the sad news while thanking the community of players.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the closing of Gazillion Entertainment. As a result, we are no longer able to operate Marvel Heroes Omega until December 31 as originally planned. Instead Marvel Heroes Omega will be sunset immediately on all platforms and will no longer be available as soon as this process is completed. The company would like to sincerely thank its fans and employees for all the support over years of development and live service."
News of
Marvel Heroes Omega's closing came earlier this month when Marvel announced it had ended its relationship with Gazillion Entertainment for reasons undisclosed. It was later leaked in a memo by Gazillion CEO Dave Dohrmann that
"banking creditors have effectively pulled the plug on the company, leading to the termination of almost every employee at the studio." As a result, employees were laid off with no paid out PTO or severance, and soon-to-be-expiring medical insurance.
Launched as
Marvel Heroes for PC back in 2013, the game became
Marvel Heroes Omega when it was ported to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One earlier this year.
Marvel Heroes had been designed as a free-to-play game, charging players for additional characters and cosmetic items like costume variations.
On the bright side, there's certainly no shortage of Marvel games both currently available and in the pipeline. Just last week Marvel announced a
new mobile RPG MARVEL Strike Force, and we still have the
Square Enix's The Avengers Project on the way.
