THE LAST OF US Co-Creator Craig Mazin Talks Episode 2 Twist And Heartbreaking Moment You Missed - SPOILERS

Addressing last night's harrowing episode of The Last of Us, co-creator Craig Mazin talks about the work that went into shooting the scene with Joel, and reveals a heartbreaking detail in the scene...

While it would inevitably upset many viewers (particularly those who haven't played the games), The Last of Us season 2 had to kill Joel. That happened in last night's "Through the Valley" when he encountered Abby, the daughter of the surgeon he shot to "save" Ellie.

There were some changes from the game; Dina takes Tommy's place on patrol, and Joel dies after being stabbed through the neck rather than having his head caved in. Much of the violence also takes place off-screen.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter (via GameFragger.com), co-creator Craig Mazin revealed new details about shooting the sequence, including why Joel never attempts to plead his case with Abby.

"When Abby tells him, 'I’m going to kill you, because there are some things we all agree are just f*cking wrong,' there is this slight moment of agreement," he explained. "Joel know what he did is capital-W Wrong. But he also had no choice [but the kill the Fireflies last season], as far as he saw it. He did what he needed to do. So we already know that he has some guilt about it from the therapy scene in episode one."

"It’s also one of the reasons we made a change from the game to have Joel in that room with Dina, as opposed to Tommy (Gabriel Luna), who’s a big, tough guy. Abby is basically saying, 'Make one mistake and we’re going to kill her," Mazin added. "And if there’s one thing we know about Joel, it’s that he’s sort of the ultimate dad. We know he cares very much about Dina and that he would never let her suffer in any way, shape or form, to defend himself."

Asked about the brutality of Joel's death, Mazin talked in detail about ensuring it wasn't too "gratuitous" and admitted they put a lot of thought into how much should be shown and what that meant for the story being told.

"Well, that’s something that [director Mark Mylod] and I talked about. We had to do quite a bit of planning about how graphic we wanted things to be, because we have a lot of prosthetics [on Pascal’s face]. We felt that the point we needed to get across was that Abby was not in control of herself. That despite her reasoned, carefully articulated point to Joel, that this is not rational. She’s going too far."

"There is a rage in her that I think we should understand is not the kind of anger that goes away simply because you killed someone. That’s the irony, or, I guess, the tragedy really of being consumed by something like this — there is no way to fix it except to somehow make your peace with it and let it go. Killing Joel isn’t going to fix this for her. She’s doing something wrong. And we needed to show how lost she was and we needed to show that other people in the room are horrified by this."

"But if those things that pushed us towards showing more brutality, the thing that restrained us is a concern that we would be somehow glorifying or celebrating this violence against somebody that we love. We care deeply about Joel and if you dwell on [the violence] too much, then it is gratuitous. Still, we needed Ellie to see him like that for several reasons."

Mazin also shared a blink-and-you'd-miss-it moment that only serves to make Joel's farewell that little bit more traumatic. "It was important, that beautiful moment where Ellie says, 'Joel, please get up' — that’s us," he explained. "And he tried that finger movement. It’s just heartbreaking."

"Mark and I spent so much time just talking about where everybody would be. We spent the day on the floor, trying different positions, finding that perfect place of connection and where everybody else would be. It was so much about making sure that Bella and Pedro and Kaitlyn were able to do this maximally upsetting thing," Mazin concluded.

Will The Last of Us suffer the same drop in viewership that The Walking Dead received when Negan murdered Glenn? Whether Joel's death is a step too far for some or a moment that makes this story all the more compelling remains to be seen in the weeks ahead.

Ellie has vowed revenge for what Abby did, and that alone should be reason enough for people to come back and see whether she's able to avenge Joel's violent demise.

Well, at least they had the balls to stick to the game, would've preferred more time with Pascal onscreen but oh well🤷🏾‍♂️

Looks like a lot of people who weren’t aware of this happening are not happy. Will this end up like Glen dying on TWD and people stop tuning in?

@mountainman - what makes me not happy is the prick who wrote 3 [frick]ing headlines, one immediately after the show ended, spoiling this for anyone who’s played the games. He has zero integrity.

@PatientXero - Yeah this seems like the adaptation spoiler that nobody seems to care about spoiling. If you didn’t watch it the day it came out, it’s all over the place now.

@mountainman - he was more vague in Daredevil review headlines.

@natebest Josh Wilding is a spoilering prick. He posted the headline that the show adapted the games most controversial moment. Anyone who has played the games knows what that means. There’s no reason he couldn’t have been more vague with something as simple as “The Last of Us S2 E2 spoiler review”. He purposely spoiled this shit, not just once, but with 3 headlines that clearly spoil what happens, to anyone who’s played the second game. This is bullshit. Absolutely no integrity.

You're pleading on deaf ears with this one man. Nate doesn't give a rats ass what his golden boy does.

@PatientXero - it's fairly shit tbh. I just watched the episode but knew they would adapt the game ending from the headlines dickhead @josh wilding was putting out

I understand why they adapted that. I think though there is an alternate universe where they could have *largely* adapted that but kept him alive. They could have had him beat until he was unconscious and in a coma, and he could have come back at the end of the season and woken up. And that wouldn't have changed anything about Ellie's revenge mission.

It is a bit hard to see this show going on for too long without Pascal. The rest of this season is fine, especially since they will be doing flashbacks. But after that? As someone mentioned last night, I see this show going through season 3. You will likely have a drop off in viewership by the end of this season, and this show was really being carried by Pedro. The secondary plot is wonderfully carried by Gabriel Luna, but Bella Ramsey is not able to carry this show going forward unless something changes. I'm not alone in thinking she is the weakest cast member with very little on screen charisma. Kaitlyn Dever though, she will be great this season; she was great on Justified.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Bella Ramsey cannot act. I've read people say the Abby actress feels more like game Ellie than Ramsey
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 4/21/2025, 3:02 PM
@McMurdo - I never played the games so I wouldn't know, but her performance in those first two episodes as Abby is better than what we have gotten to date for Ellie. Ramsey just doesn't come off as likeable at all, basically a prick, and there are few scenes when she is without Pascal that are serviceable.

I get that this happens in the game but I am definitely ALOT LESS interested in the show without Pedro. The Ellie actress is cringe, and has little in the way of acting skills / charisma to carry the weight of the show.... Unlike Glen and Walking dead references... The Last Of Us does not have the same ensemble of actors to carry the show forward.

Lol. This show is going to flop.

The Last of Us part II had great gameplay, but the story was complete ass.

As much as I am a fan of Pascal, I’m still watching this show. It’s well written and my wife and I hardly have any shows that we enjoy watching together, so daddy’s watching this til the wheels fall off. One of the best episodes of the show had very little Pedro. “Long,Long Time.” So it’s very realistic to say this show can survive without as much Pedro. Ellie, Abby, Dina, Jesse, Tommy, Maria and Catherine O’hara’s character are all promising characters. It’ll probably be more of an ensemble. The writing has been solid so far.
