PUNISHER: WAR ZONE Director Reveals Why She Would Never Helm WONDER WOMAN

With Warner Bros. apparently on the hunt for a female director for Wonder Woman, Lexi Alexander has been named as an ideal candidate by fans. However, she talks more here about why she would never be interested and the potential damage it could do to whoever does...

Recently, Lexi Alexander was quoted as saying that she had heard a female director has been approached by Warner Bros. for Wonder Woman and that "everybody will be very happy, including me" if the mystery filmmaker agrees to helm the 2017 release starring Gal Gadot. Regardless of the gender of whoever ends up directing, it's not going to be an easy task to bring the character to the big screen in her own solo outing. NBC's TV pilot was a dud, and while Wonder Woman will be coming off the back of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (and ahead of Zack Snyder's first Justice League movie), Warner Bros. still face what you have to imagine is a huge challenge when it comes to developing what is essentially the first female led superhero movie.

Talking to Fast Company recently, Alexander is quoted as saying the following in regards to why she would say no to Wonder Woman: "Imagine the weight on my shoulders. How many male superhero movies fail? So now, we finally get Wonder Woman with a female director; imagine if it fails. And you have no control over marketing, over budget. So without any control, you carry the f***ing weight of gender equality for both characters and women directors. No way." She makes a lot of valid points here. Green Lantern was a failure and put that character on the shelf for nine years, but superhero movies haven't gone anywhere...if Wonder Woman is a disappointment though, it may be taken as a sign that there's no room for female led superhero movies and, even more worryingly, that female directors shouldn't play a role in the genre. We're going to have to wait and see! Who do you guys think is the best choice to helm this movie?

@COREY6487

I agree, it need to be a director who WB think can make the best Wonder Woman movie possible, regardless of gender. Otherwise it just comes off as a gimmick.

@Lozzy

But it so happens int he in the industry that the "best" directirs they choose from is always men. Theres a lot of great female directors around they can get that can do Wonder Woman justice

I surprisingly liked Green Street, it's become a huge film in British culture here, and I really did not expect to like it as much as I did.

She has a point, it's HUGE pressure, it's not just a female superhero, it's THE female superhero. But that being said, if she doesn't have the balls (so to speak) to take on this project then she really isn't right for the job.

Just throw a trick full of money at Kathryn Bigelow!

Wonder Woman will most likely pass the Bechler test if its directed by a woman, lol

It doesn't need to be a female director, it is disappointing they're looking at it that way.
But also in terms of the gritty, emotional and storytelling viewpoint, then regardless of gender, Kathryn Bigelow would be the perfect fit.

Or I think Luc Besson could be interesting.

Excuses, excuses. It isn't as hard as it seems! There's TONS of source material to reference AND movies out there with Greek & (Roman) mythology to be inspired by.

Well 90% of the time studios only considers males so its fair game they choose some of the best female directors for the job

Actually it is hard to get right. Thats why its been so long that we havent had a Wonder Woman movie. You want to make it your own and make a nice interpretation of the chaacter. You dont want to necessarily mimic other movies

Yeah, wouldn't want this movie to be in the hands of someone unsure about their own capability.

I would make a [frick]ing awesome Wonder Woman film- if only WB would hit me up ;)

I want them to choose a female thats confident in herself to do it

Yeah Bigelow is the first that comes to mind.

Then again I think she's the only female director I know off hand.

Maybe Angelina Jolie?

Yeah, everything she said. Also because she's awful and no one would ever ask her to do it.

Seriously??? Reason this movie hasn't been made is because they expect Wonder Woman. To fail. NOT the best mindset to start off with in ANY situation. WB HAD Joss Whedon at one point ready to knock this out of the park and passed him by!!!

Idiot move.

@FordEl

Yes there are a lot of talent female directors in hollywood right now and I think they should be taken just as seriously as male director are. However by WB only looking at female directors for this movie, the main focus becomes 'is this director a woman?' and not 'does this diretor have a great pitch for this movie'.

After 'War Zone' I'm surprised her name popped up on any list for anything even resembling a super hero film.

The good news here Lexi is we can't think any less of you after what you did to Punisher.

The bad news is that we want a decent WW movie, so no. Stay far, far away please.

Thats the big problem right there. Great females artists arent getting enough exposure in the film industry

What do you mean Punisher War Zone was everything it said it was on the tin? I don't remember the tin saying it was a terrible movie with dumb, over the top violence and characters that couldn't be taken seriously. Maybe I missed where it said that though...

Lexi is no Jackie Robinson for the Hollywood gender barrier that's for sure.

But then again, I can't blame her considering the crap she had to deal with in the making of Punisher Warzone. Gale Ann Hurd and the executives at Lionsgate left her out to dry during the production period and then tampered with her film in post-production editing to contribute to the mess which (dis)graced the silver screen.

So, I can definitely see why she'd be hesitant to handle any big budget DC film considering how WB will probably [frick] with it all the way through.

ChuckV - 11/12/2014, 5:33 AM
This MINDSET is WHY WB will always be playing second fiddle to Marvel Studios on the movie front. So damn frustrating as a fan.

If WW fails, Marvel will pick up the slack no problem. Lexi shouldn't be a contender for directing this anyway.
