Christopher McQuarrie Reveals His Desire To Build Fox's Comic Book Movie Universe

Mark Millar has already said that The Wolverine is Fox's Iron Man in terms of kicking off a more cohesive universe, and now the screenwriter of that film has revealed that he has approached both Bryan Singer and 20th Century Fox about building their comic book movie universe.

Despite a few solid hits, Fox's comic book movies have not been particularly well received by fans OR critics over the years. However, it now appears as if they are finally on the right track, hiring Mark Millar as a Creative Consultant and directors like Bryan Singer and Josh Trank to helm X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Fantastic Four respectively. Talking to Screen Rant, The Wolverine's screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (who has most recently written AND directed Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher) had this to say about his desire to make Fox's universe a far more cohesive place. Unfortunately, it sounds as if his suggestions have so far fallen on deaf ears...

"You know, Bryan and I have talked about it a bunch of times – and in fact, right after I got back from shooting [Jack Reacher] I had a meeting with Tom Rothman – just a general meeting – and I said to Tom, ‘You know what I’d really love to do, is I’d really love to flesh out the X-Men Universe for you. You have this great wealth of these Marvel characters, and the X-Men franchise has only focused on a small handful of them – there’s many more.'"

"And I thought that it’d be really cool to create a ‘bible’ – you know, a series of outlines of interlocking movies where you could do kind of what they did with ‘The Avengers,’ where you’re creating multiple movies that could come together as one movie here and there. And… you know… I never heard back [laughs]. But that would kinda be fun – to do something like that – where you could kind of become the curator for something like that."

You didn't get a call back surprise, surprise!

Until both Singer (waiting) and Rothman (soon) are gone no CBM fan will ever get what they want from the Fox/marvel owned properties.

Christopher McQuarrie is a genius. He would definitely make FOX suck less.

I had high hopes for THE WOLVERINE; we had an Aronofsky and McQuarrie combo.

Hugh Jackman had this to say about the script, "There’s going to be some meat on the bones. There will be something to think about as you leave the theater, for sure”

However ...

In March 2011, Darren Aronofsky bowed out of directing the film. By June 2011, James Mangold was brought into helm the project. It's obvious that Aronofsky was sick of studio involvement.

In September, Mark Bomback was hired to rewrite McQuarrie's script.

Yep, they gutted everything that would have been amazing about this movie.

@MistressDeath - Nah. I don't see Sony taking that into consideration because 1) They're too busy with starting a new, rebooted franchise with Spider-Man, and 2) With the critical reception that Sony has recieved from critics and fans for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, they'll probably try and start up a new franchise for Ghost Rider, which will take time to do so, and before they could do that, the rights to Ghost Rider will most likely revert back to Marvel Studios.

Through all the dissapointing news in this article, and the Fox hate, their is a strong ray of hope.

He's been planning this for some time now, and letting it cook in the back of his mind. And he wrote the original screenplay for The Wolverine?

Bodes well.

Make him a leader.

People on this site talking smack that the Avengers wasn't a further breakthrough to the genre as was Batman Begins when it boosted comic book movies. Avengers came out and DC and Warner Bros. are scrambling to get Justice League of the ground, and now these people wanting their own cinematic universe. Marvel>everybody else.

Wait I'm confused. I thought FOX WAS doing their own cinematic universe....sooo F4 & The X-Men will exist in the same world but will never cross paths? If that's the case, then this whole "cinematic universe" is just to keep the movie rights(not that I would want a X-Men/F4 team-up anyway...not by FOX anyway).

Yes, there is soo much more to the X-Men universe...I wouldn't be surprised if FOX just introduced Mr. Sinister 10 years from now.smh

Just please, please, PLEASE don't let this fall back to Marvel Studios. I can't watch another light hearted comedy aimed for kids. Still sad we won't see Carnahan's 70's Daredevil.

Fox Universe and Marvel Universe at the same time is gonna confuse the shit out of audiences, specially cause the FF and the Xmen are properties that dont really mesh very well , they havent , to my knowledge had any meaningfull crossovers , so i dont knw how this guys are gonna merge both worlds

yeah, the usual suspects & the way of the gun are both legendary. put that grit into the 'x-world' and we would truly have something different on our hands. not just another 'avengers' rehash, which is what we can all pretty much guarantee that Justice league will turn out to be.

it would be really innovative of FOX to approach things this way. let the film gods hear this plea!!!

@superotherside yes!...and somewhat no. The problem is you got people who will see these X films that haven't read the books. Ex. one of my best friends really likes X:TLS....and X-Men Origins: Wolverine! She thinks that Wolverine movie was good.lol

But they have pissed of the fans with some of there X-Men movies.

The FF and X-Men can crossover through the character of Franklin Richards.

I hope Fox keeps the film rights and give us a Marvel universe that doesn't fit the same vanilla crowd pleasing formula that Disney cranks out.

I trust Millar to set up a world that in his words,'Wont contradict Marvel studios"
Nothing says the two worlds can't cross over down the line.

This Fox "cohesive" universe is already doomed. The general consensus on MANY websites is to give the rights back to Marvel. And although I agree, NOTHING will change because the masses will pay the cash to see these movies, which is extremely disappointing.
I haven't paid Fox a dime since the first X-Men...
As tempting as it is to want to see a new X-Men, force yourselves not to buy into it.

@InfiniteMonkey

If its too late for Fox to fix the X-Men films due to order of appearance it would also be to late to introduce them into the Marvel cinematic universe.

Having the FF appear after Ironman and the Avengers would be just as wrong as Wolverine joining the X-Men before Angel.

At least Fox is trying to repair the timeline and nothing says those orders of appearance will not be corrected post XMDOFP since it is a time travel story that involves fixing fricked up timelines.

@StarReactor

How can the Fox "cohesive"universe be doomed if by your own admission the masses(have) will pay cash to see it?

You could say the same thing about the masses supporting the cookie cutter, family friendly tripe thats the Marvel cinematic universe.

Granted,X-Men last stand,X-Men origins Wolverine,Daredevil,Elektra and both FF films sucked, but X-Men,X2 and X-Men first class were better written and acted then most of what Marvel has cranked out.

Look,of all the films Marvel studios has made, only Ironman and The Avengers will go down in history as great movies.

The Hulk film had a great third act but Thor and Captain America were only Ok.

I know the battle with the Destroyer was supposed to show us how mighty Thor is but it really served to deflate the movie.

Ironman 2 blew because it was such a naked set up for The Avengers that took screen time away from Stark,Hammer and Vanko in order to cram S.H.I.E.L.D and the Avengers buildup down our throats.

My point is I see a lot more upside with Fox and the X-Men/FF films due to the involvement of Singer/Millar and McQuarrie then Marvel studios and Antman/GOTG with their plug in directors.

mgeoff88 - 12/18/2012, 10:02 PM
And that's why we don't have nice things.

FOX only has a small amount of great Marvel movies under their belt, which is bad when you consider the total amount of Marvel movies they've done.
