Ian McKelllen, "Gandalf More Powerful Than Magneto"

The actor behind The Hobbit's Gandalf the Grey and X-Men's Master of Magnetism, Magneto says his LOTR alter ego would come out on top in a fight with one of Marvel's most powerful mutants.

When asked if he ever thought of using his Magneto powers to take away the weapons from the goblins and orcs, Sir Ian McKellen said the thought never crossed his mind. “No, see, because you know Gandalf is more powerful than Magneto.” And when asked if he's saying Gandalf wins 2-out-of-3 or every time? “Yes, every time. The old guy will do it every time. He’s seven thousand years old. He knows it all.”

I have to disagree here, maybe Gandalf the White would have a chance but I have a hard time seeing Magneto lose to Gandalf the Grey, at the very least he'd get him once. Then again, Magneto did recently lose to Iron Man in Avengers vs X-Men so maybe he's not as powerful as we thought. What do you think? Sound off in the comments section below.

Catch McKellen in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey which opens in theaters December 14th. And feel free to eagerly speculate on the possibility to seeing McKellen come face to face with his younger self, Michael Fassbender in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past July 18th, 2014.

Magneto only lost to Iron Man because Iron Man is a hot item and they don't want to make him seem weak.

After the wizard battle I remember from the FOTR, I myself go with Magneto. He would do more than spin a guy on his head.

Considering Gandalf either white or Grey would be in the woods somewhere.. Im assuming there'd be minimal metal objects for Magneto to utilise. So I'm Team Gandalf.

I would say Gandalf. Gandalf knows magic and that is a huge thing in his favor. He has beaten a dragon all by himself. Survived thousands of years, etc. Not saying Magneto isn't powerful though. He is very powerful.

Hancock Not anymore.

isn't gandalf a spirit or something? i always thought after his physical form is destroyed he can just re-take it over and over, something magneto obviously can't do.

A wizard by nature would be stronger then a guy who controls metal as for Ironman vs Magneto if you heat up metal it loses its magnetic charge or match the magnetic field would nullifiy the magnetic force like magnets of the same polar charge. All which Ironman can do so it's not as impossible as it seems.

Gandalf is not human, not of the race of men, I can't recall what he is, but I think all of the Middle Earth wizards are of this same race that is not, effectively, human. Very old, and very powerful. He'd flatten Magneto.

Yikes. Tough choice here. Both characters are so uniquely powerful in their own universe. Gandalf, who is a pure, immortal being called a "Maiar," who has ancient knowledge of powerful spells and magic, and possesses both physical and mental powers. He is great in hand-to-hand combat with dual wielded weapons (particularly with his sword and staff), an intellegent tactician in combat, and can conjure the most powerful spells without any trouble. With Magneto, he is one of the most powerful mutants on Earth (probably second to Charles Xavier). As the Master of Magnetism, he can manipulate any type of metal (in whatever shape or form) and use it to his advantage. He is also able to create a magnetic force-field around him, manipulate any type or organic or artificial metal, and use the Earth's EM field to strengthen him. And considering the fact that he is also an intelligent tactician, a hand-to-hand combtant, and having superhuman reflexes, strength, and durability, Magneto can certainly give Gandalf quite the duel. I think what it comes down to is the environment that they'll fight in. One environment might give an opponent the upper-hand in this duel and vice versa for the other opponent. Buuuuuuuuuut.......................I would go with Gandalf on this. I just think, IMO, that magic can overcome the power of magnetism. Again, that's just what I think. :)

Gandalf is a Maiar, same "race" as Sauron and the Balrog. He's diminished in his phisical form but he's waaaay more than he looks. Sir McKellen said he's 7k years old? Well, i'd say in the lore Gandalf was there even before the world was created.

Btw Gandalf is a bit like Batman, he always finds a subtle (to the eyes) way to escape dire situations. Always important to note also that Tolkien's magic wasn't about exploding lights and stuff (mostly), but control over or bending nature itself.

I'd say Gandalf. But certainly not easily.

Magneto is my favourite Marvel villain, but Gandalf would win. Gandalf is one of the Maiar, which in Tolkein's works represent Angels, the second most powerful race in that mythology, after the Valar.

Think about it this way; realistically, could Magneto beat Odin? Because Gandalf is probably of a very similar power-level to the All-Father.

Magneto does not control only metal. My. God. He can control other materials, such as wood or plastic, almost as easily as controlling metal (as shown in Classic X-Men #12, Uncanny X-Men #112, New Mutants Vol. 1 #40, Uncanny X-Men #275, X-Men Vol. 2 #2, Excalibur Vol. 3 #14). If that wasn't enough, he has already disrupted a person's nervous system (Uncanny X-Men #304, X-Men Vol. 2 #72), ripped people in half (X-Men Vol. 2 #110) and manipulated the iron in the blood (X-Force #25). Magneto can control electricity (Uncanny X-Men #104, Uncanny X-Men #150), generate electromagnetic pulses so strong that easily affect the whole planet (X-Men Vol. 2 #25, Excalibur Vol. 3 #4), manipulate heat (Uncanny X-Men #104) and light (Vision and Scarlet Witch miniseries Vol.1 #4, Excalibur Vol. 3 # 4). Magneto can affect the planet in a global scale, as experienced when he manipulated the entire planetary electromagnetic sphere (Uncanny X-Men #150, X-Men Vol. 2 #86). If you are still not convinced, he has created traversable wormholes (Excalibur Vol. 3 #7/8, Avengers Disassembled). There are many more feats that I could display on this page, but I guess none of you are willing to read that much. Magneto only lost to Iron Man because the latter is what gives money nowadays, as he is one of Marvel's most popular and financially successful characters ever, and the kids wouldn't like seeing their favorite hero lose to an old fart such as Magneto.
