James Mangold On The Secret Aspect Of 'THE WOLVERINE'

Well not secret per say but an undisclosed truth. When discussing the marketing for "The Wolverine" director James Mangold says, "I do what I can from my end, but they're not quite giving away the fact that almost half of it is in Japanese with subtitles, are they? That's a little secret!"

While discussing "The Wolverine" with The Huffington Post, director James Mangold shared that he isn't particularly thrilled with the film's marketing. Said Mangold, "I also think the marketing -- the trailers and stuff -- are selling it straight, in a way. My own theory -- I don't think it's bad or good because the movie is the movie -- is that the trailers scare everyone a little in kind of your world. Because they're selling to 14 year olds. I do what I can from my end, but they're not quite giving away the fact that almost half of it is in Japanese with subtitles, are they? That's a little secret!"

By all accounts "The Wolverine" is a very good installment in the X-Men series of films and leagues above it's predecessor "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." So if you're on the fence about seeing "The Wolverine" due to the film's marketing, just remember that what's being shown in tv spots and trailers is not necessarily the film that Jackman and Mangold made. '

The conversation also turned towards "Man of Steel" and the lack of large-scale destruction that so many summer blockbusters now seem to feel is a requirement. Added Mangold, "Well, that's intentional. Not in reaction to anything coming out this summer because I had no idea what anyone was doing -- but it was my own reaction to feeling like (A) we didn't have as much money as those movies and (B), to use the money and metaphor a little bit: I didn't feel like I could afford or have the interest to enter a kind of CG arms race. And I felt that I'd lose, essentially, as a smaller nation. And as you know from my filmography, I don't come from a sensibility where more is more. What you're saying is that we're a little off of the radar. Yeah. And I think that our timing is good, given the kind of movie we are. Meaning that because the movie is more dramatic -- and it does have action -- but it's not trying to even compete on the level of global destruction of the movie that came immediately before. I think that we're a relief."

I like the fact we have them actually speaking Japanese and not this quasi English bullshit with an accent bullshit they constantly throw at us, either go all international for your international film or speak pure English, none of this quasi bullshit. As for the subs im fine with it, I live in a non English speaking country so Im used to reading subs during my movies, I don't understand why the MERICAN master race is having a problem with such a concept, if everyone else can do it why cant they?

I applaud him for telling it how it is!
And there's nothing wrong with subs, I hate it when movies are apparently set in a foreign destination, but yet EVERYONE speaks English, it's lazy filmmaking.

I'm happy this movie went a different direction from CGI filled explosions fests we have nowadays. But critics seem to dislike because of that.

I have big expectations but so far still disappointed. Wolverine is one of the most iconic Marvel characters of all time. But I'm sick of seeing Jackman with claws and calling him Wolverine. Without the suit and cowl there is no Wolverine. The directors need to YouTube Superhero beatdown Wolverine vs Batman or Wolverine vs Predator. Those are low budget short fan films and his costume is the most badass to date!! Please listen to the fans and give us the Wolverine that we deserve!!

ekrolo2 - 7/22/2013, 2:40 PM
@VicVicious

The costume does NOT define who the character is in any way, shape or form and thus it is unnecessary for him to even have one. Hell he doesn't even have a secret identity to protect, everyone knows hes a mutant with claws so its unnecessary for him to even have one.

It's doing okay on RT but it went from 60 to 67 in a matter of days. I hope the reviews start flowing in. It seems more constricted

If you're still bitching about not getting the comic book costumes, please shoot yourself in the leg. I don't want you to die. I just think you need a painful wake up call to help you realize that the world doesn't revolve around you.

The Xmen costumes would be a hard sale. Captain America and Superman can pull it off, but I don't see you bitching when they suit Batman up like Robocop. Cap's "more faithful" costume in Avengers even looked pretty corny. If they did the Xmen costumes in a fashion similar to Wolverines Xforce costume, it could work. But the multitude of different colors don't make them look like a team. They're not uniform. So get over it and move on.

@TheRationalOne I completely 100% agree. The X-Men are a TEAM and they didn't really look like a team in the comics, they just looked like the Avengers, a group of independent heroes who came together to make a team.

The X-Men costumes look realistic, not corny and are pretty cool if you ask me. I'd also hate to see Wolverine in the movies wearing spandex and yellow.

Subtitles?!? Awesome, because that's what I really want to do when I go to movies - read a lot of text

To TheRationalOne:
That's a bit harsh, I am new to this site and don't go bashing others. I'm just voicing my opinion which I know am not the only one. Wolverine would be amazing in costume. That's the biggest costume which I hear and read everywhere! The costumes do make the characters for the most part. Deadpool is one of the most liked characters ever created and all I heard were complaints about his lack of costume in Origins. All I'm saying is the characters that we all love and read in the comics would be awesome on screen.

If logan looks dumb in his costume? How did he get so popular before the movies came out? I understand what you guys are trying to say but now your taking it to far calling his costume stupid. Like you didn't go crazy when you saw Wolverine for the first time in your life in costume. The things people will say to try and make something sound good.

On the costume thing. Its not so much that it wouldn't work on screen, its that it doesn't work for wolvie in this universe. In the comics there is a very long history of costumed heroes, so if you want to put on a costume its not a big deal. These movies have to have a viable reason to put on a costume. Every costume we have seen in cbm's have had a reason behind them from spidey to cap. Even first classes costumes were "flight suits." Wolverine for the most part doesn't need one, and the only one that fits his personality would be a version of the xforce one. I'm a big wolvie fan for who he his not what he wears. I never felt his costume matched his personality, or what he does.

If I wanted to read, I'd buy a book. I go to the movies to WATCH entertainment. That's why it's called a film and not a novel. Idjit.
