X2: X-MEN UNITED Writer Zak Penn Says The Dark Phoenix Saga Almost Made It Into The Movie

Screenwriter Zak Penn has contributed to the stories of some pretty iconic movies, and one of them, in particular, would be very different without his input. Hit the jump for more on the story behind X2...

It's no secret that Fox has been aching to do the Dark Phoenix storyline in an X-Men film for a long time. Many fans feel that X-Men: The Last Stand didn't do the source material justice, and there are some concerns about how next year's X-Men: Dark Phoenix will turn out.

However, we almost got a taste of this storyline even earlier than this, as writer Zak Penn recently said that the original plan for X2: X-Men United was to include Jean Grey's transformation into Phoenix.

Penn, who shares a story credit on the X-Men sequel with David Hayter and director Bryan Singer, recently talked with The Hollywood Reporter to promote his new film, Ready Player One. In the interview, he discussed some of his past work, and shed some light on the process behind X2. Penn says:

"On X2, part of how I ended up getting the job on it was that originally that was going to be the Phoenix story. I just said ... 'you've built up this real universe and you should establish it more before you go into Phoenix."

"It was too soon to go into the Phoenix story and it was too soon to get cosmic. I would say that's probably the biggest contribution I made was pushing it in that direction. There are a bunch of scenes I wrote that are still in there. I don't remember what movie I left to do while they were making X-Men 2, but that was kind of the story of my life. I would come in and do something and then leave."

X2 ended up being praised as one of the best comic book movies of the era, so hindsight definitely makes it seem like focusing on Stryker and the fragile alliance between Magneto and Xavier was the right decision.

Given the fact that there have been some behind the scenes problems with Dark Phoenix and that 15 years later Fox still hasn't released a proper adaptation of The Dark Phoenix Saga, the direction Singer ended up taking with X2 looks even smarter.

If it was too soon to go into the phoenix stuff in X2, what the hell happened in X3? He did happen to write that movie too

MCU will do it justice.
As long as we don't give that cosmic shit to Gunn, otherwise you can say bye bye to the Phoenix entity.

X2
When Logan unleashed on the Strike Team and every fan drooled.

Recall that first teaser? Logan running straight at camera with claws popped?

Great times.

Although Scott still got the shaft

@IronGenesis - Except they nerfed the hell out of Logan. So....that was a huge let down. It was an "almost wow" moment. Then Logan came out, and people let out a collective "f*ck yeah, now THAT'S wolverine"

They Pheonix Saga is big enough that they can save it for the end of a phase, and Galactus should replace Thanos as the next thing they build up to over the course of a few phases

@dracula - Agreed about Phoenix for sure. Not so sure about Galactus. He should be used, but should he replace Thanos as the overarching threat? another giant, godlike alien conqueror? Who's purple? I'm thinking it should be something different. Like Norman Osborne or Doctor Doom. Earthbound characters who could cause some serious damage/trouble.

@Termin8er - Norman Osborne and Doctor Doom are great, but are they big enough to replace Thanos, like Norman needs to be in a Spiderman movie as Green Goblin, and Doctor Doom needs to be used for a Fantastic 4 movie. On that note, they shouldnt use Doctor Doom right away the way I see the villains going is
Fantastic Four:Mole Man
Fantastic Four 2:Namor
Fantastic Four 3:Doctor Doom
also
Spiderman 2:Doctor Octopus
Spiderman 3:Green Goblin
If not Galactus Kang The Conqueror could work

@dracula - Love the ideas of waiting for FF4 and Spidey 3 to use Doom and Osborne, as I think they should. But once those happen, they could become overarching villains. They could use Norman for Dark Avengers. How awesome would that be? And I love the idea of Namor as a FF villain, but someone pitched me the idea of Namor as the BP2 villain. Both of those ideas sounded really cool to me. I think Osborne should be introduced in Spidey 2 and then become the Goblin in 3. I like the idea of Ock as a villain, but two villains in a row that we've seen before? That would also be the second spiderman 2 movie with doc ock lol. I think for 2 they should go with Kraven, and if they want to do a secondary villain, use someone like Chameleon and Scorpion. Chameleon is Kraven's half brother or something in the comics, right?

Phoenix should really be a trilogy in and of itself not one movie. If I had a choice of how they’d do X-men in the MCU I’d have it be an origin story featuring just the main group in a First Class style coming of age movie where you see them going up against Bolivar Trask and maybe some Proto-Sentinel mercs hunting down mutants, then a streaming series for wolverine, a second movie set a few years after with Wolverine and some of the classic 2nd tier members like Storm and Colossus with Magneto and the Brotherhood as the villains, then another Wolverine series maybe dealing with Dakken/X-23/Lady Deathstrike, a 3rd Movie with some of the 90’s characters like Gambit, Rogue, and Nightcrawler with Kelly and Mutant Registration the big threat, a 3rd Wolverine series dealing with Deadpool, Silver Samurai, and Omega Red. Then maybe and Avengers vs X-men crossover using the Sokovia Accords and Mutant Registration as the catalyst for that and THEN GO into a big arc about the Phoenix Saga but it’s just to much for 1 or even 2 movies and they really have to establish the characters for that story to really matter and that takes a while. Can’t just keep killing Jean every other movie

X2 is still really great, even though over the years for me it's lost a bit of it's lustre. So many scenes I love from that movie.
