CHARLIE'S ANGELS Director And Star Elizabeth Banks Reflects On The 2019 Reboot's Failings

Doing the rounds to hype her new movie Cocaine Bear, filmmaker Elizabeth Banks reflects on Charlie's Angels bombing critically and commercially, saying she now takes "full responsibility" for that...

Charlie's Angels was released in 2019 to mixed reviews, underperforming at the box office and being largely forgotten in the months that followed. With an $8 million opening weekend on a budget of $48 million, the movie would go on to gross a mere $73 million at the global box office on a reported budget of around $50 million.

It was a pity as the rebooted franchise had potential (especially with a cast led by Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska) but not helping matters was the sheer amount of negativity surrounding the project before it was released.

At the time, star and director Elizabeth Banks wondered if moviegoers simply didn't want a female-led action movie. There was some controversy surrounding her comments, as is so often the case on social media, with many hitting back at the writer, director, producer, and star's suggestion her movie's failings could be down to sexism.

Talking to Variety (via ActioNewz.com), Banks reflected on that time by saying, "I took full responsibility for 'Charlie’s Angels' - certainly no one else did. It was all laid on me and I happily accepted, because what else am I supposed to do?"

Despite releasing what proved to be a major flop, Banks has been able to avoid going to movie jail in the same way as so many female filmmakers before her. Cocaine Bear is up next and looks set to be something of a comeback for the filmmaker as she looks to prove one disappointment won't define her career behind the camera.

"I wasn’t that worried about it," she says of avoiding that purgatory. "I mean, I do a lot of things."

It feels like Banks is done talking about Charlie's Angels, and while she may take "full responsibility," it's hardly her fault alone that the movie underperformed. The marketing campaign was pretty dismal, and it being promoted as some sort of statement on feminism was clearly a turn-off for the vast majority of moviegoers.

Unfortunately, its poor performance will have only reinforced the idea that female-led action movies don't do business. Hopefully, one will come along that's a hit (not involving a superhero), though we doubt the Charlie's Angels franchise will be revisited anytime soon.

What did you guys think about the 2019 movie? Let us know in the usual place.

Good for her for taking responsibility for the movie's bombing. Liz's a great comedic actress and I honestly hope Cocaine Bear is really great.

@FilmGuy7878 - she didn’t take responsibility though. Just Google her accusing Spielberg for never directing a movie with a female lead. She’s a joke.

@HAILHYDRA - I mean he did with Jurassic Park (Ellie Sattler) so that's honestly a dumb accusation.

@FilmGuy7878 - Ellie is hugely important to that entire film too.

@FilmGuy7878 - At the time she blamed the movies failings on misogyny.

@mountainman - no she didn't though. She made dumb statements before it came out but she never blamed its poor performance on men or misogyny after the fact. It does say something that people like you keep repeating this lie to shit on her though. Almost like there's some underlying factor that I can't quite put my finger on. Hmm

@BigPhilbowski - I don't know what's worse. Whatever insulting thing you are trying to insinuate about me, or the fact that you are blatantly lying about her blaming the movie's failure on men.

@mountainman - I suggest you try brushing up on your reading comprehension skills. Again, she never blamed the poor performance on men or misogyny after the fact. So yeah, you're the liar here.

@BigPhilbowski - Maybe you should learn to read.

From the article: “If this movie doesn’t make money it reinforces a stereotype in Hollywood that men don’t go see women do action movies.”

So yes, she didn't in exact words blame misogyny, but she literally blamed men for its failure. In plain words. Out of her mouth.

@mountainman - again. Do you have any clue what "after the fact" means. Clearly not. So once again. She NEVER blamed men or misogyny for its failure after the fact. Again, those comments you keep highlighting are from before the movie came out which I've mentioned in every single reply. [frick]ing hell dude. You're either really stupid or just trolling at this stage.

@BigPhilbowski - Trying to figure out why you're getting so worked up over nothing here. The fella above said nothing about "after the fact", only you. So there's no reason to get angry at him over that for.

@MosquitoFarmer - no but he's repeatedly claimed she blamed its failure on men. She didn't

Proof-reading is important.

Yeah no. You blamed men for not seeing it. If you said you NOW take responsibility for it, that'd be another story. But now you're pretending like you always took responsibility for it.
