The Fast & Furious movies have become steadily more ridiculous in recent years, with street racing put to one side in favor of resurrections, sci-fi tech, and cars leaping between skyscrapers.
That's part of the franchise's charm, of course, and there have been jokes online for a while now that the logical next step is to head into outer space. Well, as yesterday's trailer for F9: The Fast Saga confirmed, at least a couple of Dom's crew members will be travelling into the upper atmosphere.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, F9 director Justin Lin explained where the idea came from.
"I went and visited Vin, and we looked at each other and we said, 'Alright, this is it – this is the one, because we finally have earned it,'" the filmmaker explained. "Once we made that commitment, I was on the phone with a lot of confused rocket scientists trying to learn the physics of things, and it definitely created some really fun conversations."
Lin went on to say that as silly as the whole thing might seem, he definitely did his research. "I'm on the phone with scientists, learning about fuel and physics," he continued. "It was great, having the scientists on the other line going, 'Wait, what? What are you trying to do?' I love it."
If you were concerned that the final few moments of the trailer spoiled F9's biggest surprise, you needn't worry.
"A lot of the time as a filmmaker, you’re so scared because you’re like, 'Oh my god, are they giving away the whole movie?' And I can promise you, even with these two long trailers, there’s still a lot that we have not shared with the world."
So, it looks like the science is going to make sense...to some extent, at least. It's hard to imagine what plays out actually being possible, but at least Lin has made an effort to ground it in something resembling reality!
