PaulRom's Top 10 Most Anticipated CBM's

The title kinda says it all. See my list after the jump!

10. Iron Man 3 (2013)

I was very disappointed when Jon Favreau announced his withdrawal from completing the trilogy he has headed for years now. I'll admit I'm very unfamiliar with Shane Black's work, but it seems like he'll make it in a similar tone that Chris Nolan would, and if that works out well, I'd probably love the final product.

9. The Wolverine (2012?)

I was as upset as nearly everyone when Darren Aronofsky announced recently that he'll no longer direct the 'sequel' to the poorly received X-Men Origins: Wolverine (and, as 99.9% of people, my anticipation went down quite a bit). Sounds like Fox is showing that they like abusing their CBM's, but if they found a reliable director who'll do the movie justice, count me in.

8. Star Trek 2 (2012)

For those who didn't know already, I was never much of a Trekkie until I saw JJ Abram's flick a few months ago, and MAN I fell in love with the franchise right away. It seems like work for the sequel is coming together slowly with less than two years to release it (JJ hasn't even signed up for it yet...fail). But if it's anything like the first movie, I definitely wanna see it!

7. Superman: The Man Of Steel (2012)

I never was quite a Superman fanatic. I enjoy him when watching stuff from DC Animated Universe, but that was sort of the extent of my interest until I recently saw Chris Reeve's first go-around in Superman: The Movie. I was impressed with the storytelling brought to the table as well as the solid acting. Seems like Zack Synder wants to make a much grittier, more violent version of the Man of Tomorrow, and sounds like it's certainly something worth seeing. So far, the cast is virtually perfect as well (I seriously dig Kevin Costner as Pa Kent).

6. Green Lantern (2011)

I know many don't like the direction this movie seems to be heading in, but here's what I think. Ryan Reynolds looks perfect as Hal Jordan (even if he is quite a comedy actor), he's read MANY GL comic books, and the suits (although made by CGI) look quite awesome. Even though I'm not the character's biggest fan, this movie looks like it could be one of the best of the year.

5. Thor (2011)

I never was a Thor fan until I saw the first trailer, read parts of the script, and seeing the epic pieces of merchandise released so far. The casting seems flawless, the costumes look perfect, and Natalie Portman is in it. Bring it on!!

4. Captain America: The First Avenger (2012)

Definitely the movie I'm most anticipating for this summer. I always liked the character, and when I saw they were making a REAL movie based on him I was thrilled. I was hesitant of Chris Evans being in the title role, but since then I've warmed up to his being in the suit, and the Superbowl ad probably tripled my anticipation. Hopefully we'll get a full trailer on Tuesday (as the recent announcement revealed) to reveal its full-on epic-ness.

3. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

As a huge fan of the Spider-Man series (even after the third movie), I was heavily disappointed when a reboot was announced. But now, I'm liking the direction it's heading. Garfield seems to scream Peter Parker whenever I see a picture of him, and Emma Stone (who I preferred as Mary Jane) seems to rock that Gwen Stacy look as well. Plus the costume looks great, IMO.

2. The Avengers (2012)

I was tied with this and TDKR for the top spot, and for good reason. A crossover of some of the biggest super heroes of all time on the big screen is a fanboy's dream, and only God knows what Marvel has in store for us when it comes out.

1. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

I know some people don't like the idea of another Batman movie taking the top spot, but considering the unresolved ending of The Dark Knight being resolved, and the near-flawless casting as of yet, Nolan fanboys are probably going through the roof. Plus we can see Bane done well for the first time!

Well, there's my list. Feel free to post your list in the comments below.

I agree with threebigtacos, marvel72 and karynPftw. The Avengers should be number one on almost every CBM fans list. Batman's been done to death, so i'm a little tired of seeing him. The avengers on the other hand... thats an event film being written/directed by the dude who made serenity... This film is a nerds dream come true. And i very much can't wait for Thor and CA:TFA.

Seems like you haven't been a fan until you see a movie. I agree with most of your list. I would title mine "Eagerly anticipating, and worried they might set the genre back a decade..."

Superman, Avengers, TDKR, Trek, Thor, Lantern, Cap, IM3, Wolverine, Spiderman.

@Darkmatter I don't think it'll be THAT high. Guess it depends on how successful Cap and Thor are.
And I'm pretty sure a JLA movie would sky rocket at the box office. Anyone would pay to see Batman and Superman on the big screen together.
Berger45
Berger45 - 3/20/2011, 6:40 PM
@Darkmatter - I wasn't going to say anything but now I have too. I am not looking for a fight so don't read this the wrong way(!)

First off, Superman and Batman is probably the best known superheroes, the world over so it would probably earn in a lot of money.

Now second part: You say that every Avenger character has "at least" some 'scientific and realistic stories/origins'. I would not say scientific. Every JLA character has the exactly same properties.
Thor is a great, if not the greatest example of a comicbookmovie character that's not realistic in any way. His name is Thor, supposedly the Norse god of the vikings. He comes from another dimension, where they all live like in the norse myths, and yet they speak shakespearen english. The only realistic part about Thor is that he wields a hammer.
Bruce banner gets a good doze of gammarays and survives, turns into a big green monster that's gets more powerful according to how angry he is.
Captain America and Batman are probably the most realistic. Ant-Man(A man who can grow absurd sizes) and Iron-Man follows.
JLA with Flash(getting faster is probably more likely than turning into a green monster), Wonder Woman(could go as Thor), Superman, Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter(Or Aquaman, it depends on how you see it).
Realism is completely out on all accounts.

I would guess World's Finest could cash in more than Avengers. If we name the four most iconic superheroes of all time it would be Superman, Batman, Captain America and Wonder Woman. All those are well known, extremely well known.

Green Lantern ain't gonna bomb. It's gonna bring the bomber-jacket back! Flash will probably follow. If The Avengers does well, as I truly believe it will, it will probably make Warner Bros. get their asses in shift and every comicbook fan will be very happy!

id put avengers 1st... seen too many batman already..
ThreeBigTacos
ThreeBigTacos - 3/20/2011, 7:14 PM
Hour45: As well, I'm not looking to fight, but Captain America and Wonder Woman are not part of the four 'iconic superheros of all time'. I remember a recent arguement, where the top three were 1.Supes 2:Spider-Man 3: Batman. to some servey (I didnt look up the facts, another CBM member had posted that)

I personally don't think DC's characters are more 'realistic' compared to the Avengers. Yes some of Marvel's characters are TRULY out there, but ultimately, DC's characters are inhuman (i.e superman, green lantern, martian man hunter, all are practically invulnerable with alien powers, what's the point to a team?). In my sight, the 4 most iconic superheros are Superman, Batman, Spiderman and Iron-Man.

Yes. you could say Marvel's characters have their flaws too, which is true, but the way i see it, is that they are easier to connect to in the real world. I can't pretend I know what Gotham or Metropolis look like in real life, whereas Spider-Man, Iron-Man and others fight in New York, a place I used to live.
ThreeBigTacos
ThreeBigTacos - 3/20/2011, 10:41 PM
Nephillim: That's a honest way of looking at it and your right, it is down to everyone's personal opinion. Personally, (as you can probably tell lol) I kinda like some realism, to better relate myself. As a kid i would love to pretend I was there fighting as the hero, flying or punching, and knowing where I was (i.e New York) added to that image in my head. I grew up loving Batman, but moved onto Spiderman, which is probably due to the more realism. Just sharing my opinion.

Excellent list. I myself can't wait for these movies also. However... I'm in the low percentage of people that are looking forward to X-Men:First Class as well. The movie looks good and probably will be. All in all... All hail the CBM universe.

Superman is the best thing on your list ;D

haha I'm a huge Superman-fanatic but there are other CBMs I'm pumped for ;D

As for Trek, always been a trekkie (I followed all the different series on t.v) I was always a fan. You're not the first person to start liking the Trek universe after the first Abrams' film in 2009..I have heard tons of people say that same thing. As a fan I knew the liberties Abrams took with TOS Universe but I respected the changes since they were trying to make the Trek Universe adaptable for a possible new trilogy of films without having to 'walk the tightrope' of TOS Universe. In that sense I mean- they can throw in new ideas without the diehards getting pissed off (like myself) Anyway i can proudly say- Superman and Star Trek2 are my top 2 CBMs coming out.

btw- nice article, I like it because it gives all of us a chance to discuss our rankings and stuff ;D But as different as my ranking is to yours, I think I am the only one on the face of the earth who really isn't all that excited about the Avengers film, LOL. Not a big avengers-fan ;D haha sorry. =P

@Superguy- I got a feeling you and I would have similar rankings to each other...similar to the extent that we'd both probably put 'Superman' as our #1 most anticipated CBM ;D

@JaySin420- Damn your list and my list would be almost the same. Just replace your #2 spot with Trek2 and replace your #4 spot with Spidey and we'd be almost the same. But definitely where you placed Superman and TDKR are the same as my list. Cap, IM3, Wolverine and Thor I just don't know...not huge fans of those guys. Avengers wouldn't even be on my list...and GL I think I'd put him right after Spidey on my list.

6th: Captain America
7th: Thor
8th: The Wolverine
9th: The Avengers
10th: IM3

@Threebigtacos - I would argue they actually are. They are the main 4 from the golden age which has not changed much and is also the most known over the world. Spider-Man is well known but the four previously mentioned are better known than Spider-Man, Iron-Man or even Aquaman.

@Darkmatter - DC superheroes translates as good as Marvel heroes. Over used and tack? That's the dumbest thing I've heard. That's the opposite of the truth, we call that a lie.

I would guess that DC characters are still better known around the world than Marvel. In North America it is a given to know Captain America, Iron-Man, Hulk and so forth but not in other countries.
I dont think those Marvel/Fox produced films are so extremely 'popular' as you make them out to be.
My mother in fact has no idea who Thor, Iron-Man or the X-Men is. She knows who Superman, Batman, Captain America and Wonder Woman is however.

Once more you lie with calling DC stale. Mentality?
In the end it seems you are a Marvel-fan boy who just don't like DC. But oh my god - the grey zone? People problems? People from Hal Jordan, Barry Allen, Jonn Jonzz, Clark Kent to Bruce Wayne, Diana Prince and Arthur Curry has human problems which we can relate to as well.

And not to rub anything in as well for you but this proof actually right in front of your eyes.

The one thing you get halfway right is "The Justice League" is set to release most likely never" - That sounds likely for the time being but it will probably come, depending on The Avengers success

Check mate - wtf? Get over yourself. You haven't mentioned anything worthy of claiming victory, and this wasn't even an argument.

@Darkmatter - Exactly how old are you? You seem like a little kid. And I am neither a DC fanboy or a Marvel fanboy. I enjoy all, and both comicbooks without putting a retarded label on it.
I havent disgarded anything you've said, I've just said that you are talking empty truths. So there's nothing to disregard. And would you care to elobrate how you measure if a character is lame or cool? Is it subjective or objective in your eyes? You are officially the dumbest person I've encounter on this site, during my two days being a member. And I love the supposed arrogance you have, it's reassuring for you, no doubt. Get a grip.
PaulRom
PaulRom - 3/21/2011, 10:03 AM
Adding to the current discussion...I agree that DC is kinda stale compared to Marvel. Maybe that's why Warner Bros. is afraid to put out more movies on their characters.
@Darkmatter I think saying a JLA movie will never be made is too far of a stretch. We don't know if they'll do it. Besides, GL's success would weaken or broaden the likelihood of other DC movies like Flash, Aquaman, and even JLA. Also, I think that, after The Avengers blows everyone's minds, Warner Bros. will want to do the same thing: crossing over their properties to create a JLA.

I am honestly getting confused by your nonesense. The butthurt comment really reflects on your anger, which makes me gues you're either a 10 year old girl or a mega-nerd in his late/early 30's who's had a redbull too much.
I had no intentions on starting a fight but you've obviously have no regards of a sophisticated conversation.

"You're whole argument hinges on what you percieve as a popularity contest between characters and the FACT is that Marvel has more characters out their in film than DC does."
- Now let me make this abundantly clear: I have never disputed that Marvel has more characters out than DC. My argument, if it ever was one to begin with, was that I think it's dumb to claim that Marvel has better characters than DC. To add to that: the state of mind of the character, people relating to a character is simply too diverse to make an outright claim that people relate better to Marvel. You utterly believe that Marvel is more realistic, which is definitely not right. Marvel's is as preposterous as DC's in its characters origins. It appears to me you haven't read anything I've wrote, which does not suprise me at all.
Trinity would

And I never said DC is more popular than Marvel. I believe, I base this of my exchange student experiences in Europe, DC characters are better known. I understand this isn't much of an argument, I am surely not completly right in this statement but from my experience Wonder Woman, Superman and Batman was really well known, especially their origins.

I cannot dispute your opinion on DC and their characters but I think it's a dumb thing to be completely biased. I am defending DC now because, well, DC needs defending. If it was Marvel, I'd defend Marvel simply because I enjoy both.
And the retcon issue - so what if they retcon? I won't bash Marvel as a return.

I do not follow what you mean by truth hurts? You've established not a single truth except that Marvel got more characters out than DC and that people watch more movies than they read comics or watch cartoons.

And I still believe that World's Finest could cash in more than The Avengers. Popularity here in US is totally different compared to what is popular, or known(strike popular) outside North America.

Paulrom agrees with you, yeah. It was childish of calling you stupid but I still think it was some dumb comments you wrote.
Berger45
Berger45 - 3/21/2011, 3:23 PM
And regarding the intro of my comment above, forget it. I didn't mean it. I won't edit it out because it would go against my own code of ethics, if you will, on the net. Again, sorry.
Berger45
Berger45 - 3/22/2011, 4:15 AM
It's your opinion that DC characters are stale and played out. That's not a fact. DC's and Marvel's characters is different, whereas DC is more traditional and Marvel is more radical. Marvel has different characters, Dc has different characters. There nothing more to it.

In the case of Silver Surfer or Captain Atom, people probably would choose Silver Surfer, yes. Silver Surfer has been featured in a movie already, so he is already established. If you would continue the list, it would absolutetly be not so certain on whom the audience would like to see. Marvel would by all means not dominate as reaffirming as you suggest.

I've never said that the Golden Age characters are more interesting or popular. I said they are better known. Superman, Batman, Captain America and Wonder Woman are probably the best known superheroes of all time. So in some sense I agree with you, though it's a misunderstanding.

The Avengers is not so well established as you might think. I am still convinced that World's Finest could do better than Avengers. At least outside America.

You're a douchebag too. And thanks.
