Stop and Think About This

Just my take on comic books that get turned into movies.

First, let me say that this is no way a dis or put down to anyone! This is just one man's opinion.

Yes, I am guilty of this too. I am talking about bashing comic book movies that are not true to their source material. I remember sitting in front of my television when I was younger (I'm going to date myself now) watching Spider-Man on the Electric Company, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Wonder Woman, Batman, and all those shows growing up, and thinking to myself wow how cool would it be if these were made into movies? Then it happened. Slowly, but surely they started to make them into movies. At that time I didn't care if they stuck to the source material as much, because I thought it was just cool they made it.

Now we look at the movies that have rolled out I'll say from the early 90's to today, and everyone seems to have a problem with them. "They didn't do the origin right. They didn't cast it right. The robots sucked. The Director sucked," and so on. But stop and think about it for a second: when you were growing up did you not think the same way I did? Now like I have said yes, I am also guilty of bashing movies about one thing or another; however, at least they are movies and not just television series or comic books any more.
We all remember reading the comic books growing up and truly hold that core material with us, but cut the studios some slack because it’s not always the way that it was in the book. The technology that we have today could not have brought us Transformers, Ghost Rider, or even Green Lantern.

The main thing I want you to stop and think about is this:
1) We all love comic books.
2) We all love the movies (more or less).
3) No matter what we will all go pay to see the movie just because it was a comic book to start.
If you stop and think about it the comic book companies are just returning the kindness that we the fans have shown them over the years by buying the books and turning them into feature films for not just us but our kids to enjoy as well.

As I stated in the beginning, this article is in NO WAY a bashing to anyone it's just my opinion.
Thank you.

I agree to an extent. To nitpick over small things when you're getting a good product is a little ridiculous. I've never understood being a purist when to make something a live action movie, there always have to be some changes. However, I do understand complaining. If you have love for a certain character or franchise, you might have an idea of how great it's movie could be. If the people making the movie seem lazy, make changes that actually make things worse, and just deliver a subpar product, you'd rather have waited a few more years for the right people to make the movie. It often feels like the movie was just an attempt to cash in rather than people genuinely trying to tell a great story.

Largely, I agree. Better to have than not. However, now that they have been going successfully for over a decade, we have somewhat reasonable standards to hold them.
I went to see "Superman Returns," solely because of the visuals. I read the story background, and knew it was going to be lacking. I am still about supporting the genre as a whole--at least as a rental DVD.
Here's the problem: most people forget that the product is made for the movie ticket buyer...it will respect and pay homage to the book, but licensing is not as stringent as we would like.
On the whole we're doing better than the old days when novels' rights were purchased, and the end product was not to the authors' likings.

I see both your points and do agree, like I said this is open to interpretation and just my thoughts. Trust me I have been let down by some movies as well but, I still shell out the money to support the effort. On another note thank you to whom ever added the pic and did the editing for me. I never thought of laying the bullets out like that. THANK YOU!

Kewl article! Dude, you have a great opinion and stuff. I also think the same things. Im not trying to disagree with you but movies like Dragonball Evolution and The Last Airbender should have never been made. Movies like Spiderman, Transformers, The Incredible Hulk, Superman Returns, Batman and The Dark Knight, etc. were all movies that were great because:

1). They didn't disrespect the source

2). They made their own story but on the same journey

3). Actors that did the character right

And more! You guys know where I'm getting at here.

Examples like Dragonball Evolution and The Last Airbender was terrible. Atleast Dragonball Evolution had its own story but on the same journey and it was a lot like the anime. The Last Airbender tried to follow the same story and journey while trying to be different. One of its many downfalls! The Prince of Persia was barely close to the game and I was angry but I couldnt complain because the movie was good. I can't wait for a real prince of Persia movie. It all matters what they think the movie is in their head's creation but doesn't mean they have to be Blind ass bats. Thats why there are changes because its wat it defines in their heads

Good work! I do believe that when the studios make movies about these characters that they are focusing on the average movie goer. It is acceptable when changes are made to fit the film, but it is unnecessary when they are made just because they didn't care at all about anything but money. We all go to see these films just to see for whatever reason we have to. You did a very good job here. :)
