UPDATE: Nicholas Winding Refn In Line To Direct The Next JAMES BOND Movie

As you'll see for yourself, the Only God Forgives director's response to being asked about possibly taking the reigns on the James Bond franchise is VERY interesting. Check it out after the jump. UPDATED with new info.

First Showing's Alex Billington has heard that Danish director Nicholas Winding Refn (Drive, Bronson, Only God Forgives) might be one of the names being looked at to take over from Sam Mendes on the James Bond franchise. This alone would be a cool enough little rumor, as Refn could definitely bring something very unique to 007, but when Alex got the chance to ask the director a few questions he mentioned this to him, and his response..well, take a look for yourself.

"I had been tipped that Refn might be interested in the new Bond, as it sounds like EON has been meeting with a large number of unique directors recently (including Chris Nolan, Danny Boyle, J.A. Bayona). So I asked him if he's considering doing Bond coming up. "Where did you hear that?" was his immediate response. I pushed him a bit more and tried to get confirmation, but alas "I love Bond... I love him," is all he said. Check out the smile when I hint that perhaps we have to wait for an announcement coming up."

For me, that's either a sure sign that Refn has at least had a meeting about it, or he's winding Alex up -- but my money is on the former. What do you guys think? Would Refn be a good fit for Bond?

UPDATE: Variety confirm that Refn is indeed one of the names being looked at for the gig. See the article a few above this one to find out who else is in contention.

I'm pretty sure Nolan will be busy with his new space movie. Maybe he can do Bond 25.

A large numbers of international critics actually rated Only God Forgives pretty high, heck the majority of Danish critcs loves the film... It's just sad that rottentomatoes don't use so many internationel critics.

So yeah, the critics are pretty divided. I heard from many who was actually at Cannes that while there were some buuhs, there was also a decent amounts of applause but that wouldn't be as "news worthy" to report, would it?

That would be cool. Too bad that his new movie Only God Forgives is getting panned at the Cannes film festival. But it would be nice to see him or Nolan helm the next James Bond.

Bond should be one of M16's operatives in Afghanistan in the next film pursuing some North Korean WMD's (or whatever Mcguffin).
Bit more of a military spy surveillance feel, stick some Special Forces in there for the grand finale.

The only film of his I've seen is Drive, but I'm looking forward to Only God Forgives. Based on Drive, he could make a very unique, interesting, visually stunning and intelligent Bond movie. I'd be happy with him getting the job.

Apparently the mixed reaction Only God Forgives is attracting is due to most critics expecting it to be similar to Drive, when it's much different.

Check out Valhalla Rising and Bronson, two totally different films compared to Drive. He would do an amazing job no doubt.

So making smart films makes someone pretentious?

Good to know that your opinion no longer matters.

He's too artsy. They won't let him do what wants.

Just Aronofsky and Wolverine, and every other genre movie he considered directing. Big budget genre movies are committee controlled and super commercially focused. Big budget genre filmakers have to put up with a whole lotta bullshit.

@Intruder
Now you're confusing me, because you always pretend to be smart. Does that make you pretentious too?

Interesting, but Nolan is still the best choice for the next bond. Hoping he gets to direct a Bond film in the future.

In the meantime, Refn will do.

any 'intellectual' film can be labeled 'pretentious' by someone who choses to dislike it. For every aguement there can be an equally solid sounding counter-arguement. In the end, its all a matter of perspective. So Live and Let live.

I'd be completely satisfied with either Nolan or Refn. I've feel all their films, not just their big ones (Dark Knight, Drive).

Refn is pretentious, but he's still made a few really great movies. Most great directors are pretentious as it takes a certain amount of over inflated self worth to get a singular vision across. If you want to make the best movie possible the guy making it has to actually think he's making the best movie possible.

I love Trudy's thoughts on Noaln's movies. Guy spends way too much time thinking about why he hates him, wow!

"That's a good question. You would have to look at his body of work and come to the realization that every single one of his movies are psuedo-intellectual, brooding, dark, serious and have a smug sense of self importance.

His entire career is that loner guy in the back of the library in his white button long sleeve, hipster glasses, stern expression and slicked back hair reading Catcher in The Rye."

LOl @ you trying to pass that as a negative.
You are just happy you discovered the word "pretentious" because you THINK that is the biggest criticism you can use against Nolan! A pretentious person would not have a BA in English Literature.
Just give up and admit you are jealous DC had him on their side. :) Its more believable. Chow.
