BARBIE Star Margot Robbie Finally Responds To Her And Director Greta Gerwig Being Snubbed At The Oscars

There's been a great deal of backlash aimed at the Academy over its decision to snub Barbie star Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig at this year's Oscars, and the actress has now weighed in on that...

We've grown used to the Oscars snubbing those that deserve to be nominated on a year-by-year basis as it's an inevitable part of any awards show. However, the Academy's decision to neither nominate Barbie star Margot Robbie nor director Greta Gerwig in the "Best Actress" and "Best Director" categories, respectively, has led to a global backlash.

It's not just on social media either; mainstream media outlets have covered the news and even high-profile personalities such as former U.S. Presidential hopeful Hilary Clinton have chimed in to criticise the Academy.

For what it's worth, though, Robbie isn't letting it get to her and seems pleased with the positive attention that Barbie has received so far.

Appearing at a SAG-AFTRA discussion about the biggest movie of 2023, the actress said (via Toonado.com), "There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed. Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director. What she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing. What she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films."

Robbie is clearly choosing her words carefully here but admitted she's "beyond ecstatic" that Barbie has picked up eight other Oscar nominations, including "Best Picture," "Best Adapted Screenplay," Best Supporting Actor" for Ryan Gosling, "Best Supporting Actress" for America Ferrera, "Best Costume Design," "Best Production Design," and two nods for "Best Original Song."

"Everyone getting the nods that they’ve had is just incredible, and the best picture nod," Robbie said before later adding, "We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it’s already done that and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this."

"People’s reactions to the movie have been the biggest reward of this entire experience. Whether it’s seeing what people are writing online, or even just seeing how much pink I can see in this room right now...I’ve never been a part of something like this. Not like this."

"I’ve done comic book stuff and that gets a big reaction, but this felt very different. It still feels very different," she concluded. "And I can’t think of a time when a movie’s had this effect on culture. And it’s amazing to be in the eye of the storm."

Both Gosling and Ferrera have been critical of the decision to snub Robbie and Gerwig but it's not like anything will change at this point. Snubbing the lead star and director of a movie that's up for "Best Picture" is undeniably baffling, but that's the Oscars for you!

Snubbed? was this really a oscar contender and not a comedy film based on a toy ? I guess it has a strong message against the patriarchy so it's suppose be nominated right cause that's whats popular right now

The trailer was enough for me to the movie was utter crap that is not Oscar worthy.

Horrible movie and Robbie has been far better in other roles. Heavy handed girl power man bashing in a toy spinoff does not make it oscar worthy. This is a ridiculous article.

@Shivermetimbers - thats your opinion, but you're in the vast minority as the movie is highly loved all over the world, and critically acclaimed, not to mention the highest grossing film of 2023. Your 100% entitled to your opinion, but don't ignore this movie was a massive success. You call it a "girl power" movie, so does that mean the Godfather is a "boy power" movie since its mainly men running everything and the women are mostly abused mentally and physically?

Shivermetimbers - 2/3/2024, 11:55 AM
@PrincessCyana - Just because it was successful also does not make it oscar worthy. I never ignored its success. It just wasn't good enough to be oscar worthy. Your comparison to The Godfather is nonsensical. The Barbie movie was clearly delivering a message about female empowerment, while trying to make men look like buffoons. That was literally what the entire movie was about. The Godfather may have shown abuse, but that was not the message of the film. And it was also a very long time ago in a different era. What an idiotic comparison.

PrincessCyana - 2/3/2024, 2:29 PM
@Shivermetimbers - The fact you realize men look like buffoons is the exact point, because many do act like buffoons when it comes to women. You proved the movies point. Its not just about empowerment, its about how women have to go through life never feeling good enough, not living up to male standards, sexualized, and then blamed for tempting men.

Godfather is a perfect example, because that movie shows male behvior. that movie is all about power and money and when it comes to women, it shows the history of them being just objects in a male dominated society. Women have only to be on the mens arm, have babies, be an object. Its exactly how society has been for a very long time. And Barbie is showing the same thing just in a different way. The minute the Ken's get an idea of power, they become buffoons and a-holes.

It's amazing to me that no one, NO ONE, in the idiot media and online cried this much for Ben Affleck who legitimately directed the best movie of the year (Argo) and really, the best "Oscar-type" movie in YEARS (it was a dark time), and he didn't get a nomination for Best Director either.

Guess it doesn't follow... THE MESSAGE.
Jacory
Jacory - 2/2/2024, 7:48 PM
@HistoryofMatt - But the movie won best picture. Having the best movie out doesn't make you the best director and vice versa. There are other things involved with making a movie than just direction.
HistoryofMatt
HistoryofMatt - 2/2/2024, 8:24 PM
@Jacory - Again... it's the exact same situation, and yet, not nearly the same reaction. When Argo was nominated for Best Picture, Affleck was not nominated for Best Director. The reaction to that is nothing near to the gnashing of teeth and wailing for the press regarding Gerwig. Why?

THE MESSAGE. That's why.
Jacory
Jacory - 2/3/2024, 7:19 AM
@HistoryofMatt - It's not the same situation. Many if not most agree that Argo was the best movie that year. Barbie doesn't have that same kind of talk. If that's not the case, then what's the message?
bobevanz
bobevanz - 2/2/2024, 10:10 AM
I mean Margot lost to 5 other women, and Greta lost her spot to Celine Song for Past Lives. What's the problem here? Margot didn't have a better performance than others, and Past Lives is 100x better than Barbie. This is fake rage bait for the tap water drinking incels

PrincessCyana
PrincessCyana - 2/2/2024, 3:08 PM
@bobevanz - what are you talking about? Celine Song was not nominated for Best Director either. Greta to me got snubbed by Martin Scorsese. I didnt like his movie at all. It was extremely white washed, over acted, and not that accurate. Greta to me blew away Scorsese. Her direction was far superior, especially how they made the film with real sets, the color palette, the costumes, the music, the cast, and uniqueness and boldness. Thats what movie direction is about. That said Chris Nolan deserves the Best Director Oscar. Long overdue and he is probably the best director on the planet. Greta deserved the nomination, just not the win.

This “issue” is the epitome of pointless modern discourse. The Far fewer people care about the Oscars than in the past anyway. What a waste of time and an article.

Except both Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig DIDN'T get snubbed tho something which you actually point out in the article.
PrincessCyana
PrincessCyana - 2/3/2024, 3:57 PM
@batman001 - Yes they did get snubbed for Best Actress and Best Director nominations. Thats the entire point. Why is that so hard to understand? Pretty much the movie's message is exactly what happened here. Gosling getting the nomination, but not the star and director. Makes no sense. But im happy to hear Margot's comments because she is so right. The movie itself is whats important, not the awards.

batman001
batman001 - 2/4/2024, 5:01 AM
@PrincessCyana - Yet both the star and the director would also receive an award should the film win Best Picture which is more prestigious then Best Actor.
