EDITORIAL: Is Marvel's animation really inferior to DC?

For as long as I can remember DC has outshone Marvel in animation. From Batman the animated series to Young Justice. We take a much needed look into why Marvel just isn't on par!

Marvel and DC are constantly at war for our money, time and loyalty yet when it comes to animation one seems to always outshine the other! Is Marvel really that inferior to it's competitor? Well Yes and No... Here's how I came to that conclusion:

Being an animation student I understand the process behind what we love to watch and judge. There's basically 3 factors DC understands that Marvel is still trying to master...

1. Art Direction
This is the point that bothers me the most... Art directors are the ones that decide what a show will look like. Once Marvel is releasing crap like the Black Panther unaired series, we need to be concerned! If it was up to me all Marvel's 2D animation would look like it did in Hulk vs. They hired Jeff Matsuda(The Batman) to do the character designs and in result it looked great! Imagine if the new Avengers show looked like that...

2. Tone/Audience
Marvel needs to make more shows for all ages. We want show that we can watch with our kids! This new Spiderman series for example is a little too childish. Marvel is probably gonna need to change the tone of the show so that us grown ups can enjoy it too.

3. Consistency
Unlike DC, Marvel hasn't quite learned to stick with what works! DC are consistent when it comes to animation. If they see a style works, they stick with it! This gives them identity so that fans can recognize their work even if they don't know the characters... We can see that consistency in their old stuff and in the new! Heres some examples:

But Marvel's work isn't all bad and should be given props for what they are doing right:

A. Marvel's Anime Series

B. Marvel's CGI

C. Marvel's 2d Potential

So is Marvel really inferior to DC when it comes to animation?

No because they can produce the same awesome quality DC offers...

Yes because they haven't and can't seem to do it continuously...

That's my two cents, do you agree?

DC animated films are much better, and this is coming from a huge MARVEL fan

Yes and no.
Justice League is my favorite cartoon to date, cannot be topped.
There is ONE (actually TWO) problem(s) in DC's animation - the focus on Batman and Superman. They'll work so hard to push out some really good material that isn't Worlds' Finest, but then they'll backtrack like you wouldn't believe.

On the other hand, Marvel is mostly about Spider-man and X-Men, and their motion comics truly do not count.

The two studios have that in common, just as they have two shows with great promise - Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Young Justice. If these shows can continue promoting awareness to characters outside the big movie icons, then their respective studios will benefit greatly.

My money is on DC though.

Marvel needs better writing when it comes to animation and comics.

Marvel did great in the 90's.
There was a show about pretty much every character.
However, DC has always been the top dog in animation
Batman TAS
Superman TAS
The New Batman Adventures
Batman Beyond
Justice League
Justice League: Unlimited
Static Shock
Teen Titans
Young Justice
And over 14 animated films

I liked the anime Fantastic Four.
The character designs were awesome. The writing needed some work, that's all

This is pretty much the only medium that DC was slightly better in.

Good editorial.
I think the short answer is : " Not for long"!
Animation is Disney's bread and butter, so eventually they'll get around to maintaining a 'brand' of animation consistent with DC's.

Best DC:
#1- Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
#2- Wonder Woman

Best Marvel:
#1-Blade
#2-Planet Hulk

Dc definitely have the edge. Had marvel not tried to make there character design look like comic art in the 90's they would have more successful series'. When they created Xmen evolution i thought they finally had a good story and charcter designs that lended themselves perfectly for animation. Thats the problem with marvel they seem to either go too complicated (Xmen, Spiderman the animated series') or simple (the spectacular spiderman. I like what i've seen so far from Ultimate spiderman, animation comparable to spectacular spiderman but far better characer designs. Its also about drawing too few frames i think as even though avengers has good designs for animation, it still is far to slow cmpared to young justice.

Marvel's coming along while DC is still well ahead. What I find interesting that despite their animated series being terrific, I have not found myself engrossed in any of DC's books. While Marvel's books keep me interested and its cartoons are just okay.

It would be impressive if Marvel could make up the difference with a series that lasts as "Smallville" did.

For the record, despite my 'handle,' I proudly own the entire "Superman TAS" and the entire "Justice League" run.

dc does it better in factors of animation and even writing sometimes but you do have to admit though, marvel has more cool heroes than dc.

DC is superior when it comes to animaton for the most part.
but in all mediums? really? yeah, that's why WB/DC can't come up with a movie that's not about Batman or Superman that doesn't bomb at the BO like the sinking of the Titanic. they're trully superior lol :P

Marvel is whooping DC's ass in everything else
The only successful live-action franchise WB/DC has had in a LONG ASS TIME is the Nolan Batman series.Maybe they'll step up their game. Who knows, Man of Steel looks really good so far.

DC is also better in video games.
Batman: Arkham Asylum & Arkham City take care of that..

I do not agree that DC has better animation than Marvel. However, I think DC wins on videogames and I get very upset about Marvel's lack of good videogames.

I like both. They're both different and I think they both need to do different things, but both are great.

Animated films: Yes DC does make better animated films. Marvel's animated films aren't nearly as good.

TV shows: Pretty much both are on par with this. Spider-man: TAS, Batman: TAS, Young Justice, The Avengers: EMH are pretty much all about the same quality and do the right thing for the characters.

Live Action Movies: Sure DC has Nolan's Bat films but that's pretty much it. Marvel has made some hits and misses in the film market but most of those are because other studios didn't do the characters right. The one's directly done by the studio has yet to make an actual "bad" film. Like Jonah Hex, Batman and Robin, etc. Where as DC has always had complete control over their property's.

I'm not saying either is bad. I'm saying that both are good and that both need to work on some things.

Great write up though. :)

What video games does DC have that can be considered critically acclaimed? Other than Batman's Arkham series?

Great points. I don't know how to say this, though...in my opinion, Marvel isn't necessarily inferior to DC in animation products. They just haven't found their 'soul', perhaps, and that's why I agree on your point on DC being more consistent than Marvel. It is quite apparent that Marvel keep on changing the overall aspects of their animation products, thus creating various animation lines; obviously different from DC's consistent Original Animated universe. That's not a bad thing, however - I think Marvel can shine with that their various takes on animation products, so that people can enjoy seeing the Marvel characters through different tones, designs, et cetera. The only problem with that, is that it will be hard for people to get used to them, and people might find some of these different takes being unacceptable. (As an example, we can see from this upcoming Ultimate Spider-Man, which a lot of people see as being far too childish.)

It has to be admitted, however, that Marvel's creative team on the animation department often acts unwisely, too. Canceling Spectacular Spider-Man, Wolverine and the X-Men, and releasing an animated movie like Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow could be Marvel's biggest mistakes in this case.

That being said, I am a DC Fanboy (though I love Marvel too) and I think they're animation is 10x better. This is whats called an "opinion" however.

Marvel is bad with it, because I'm not there offering ideas. LET ME STOP LOL!! Seriously I've been disappointed with Marvel's animation direction- especially since I've always liked Marvel more so than DC. DC actually seems to cater more towards older people. Meaning people in their early mid and late 20's, 30's 40's, and 50's even.

This age group actually enjoyed their stories and even animation back in the 90's with Batman animated series, then later with Superman, and Justice League- and now with Young Justice, and the movies they put out on bluray/dvd its only gotten better.

Marvel tends to go more for the youngins, I'm not sure if being linked with Disney has anything to do with it (lol). But I and many others find their stuff a bit too childish. Its always centered around high school issues, and the animation is either mediocre, or they tend to go too Japanese anime-ish. Although Spiderman should always be high schoolish- he's more exciting in that setting- but I was annoyed with the X-MEN cartoon that did this too, and then later Iron Man... Tony Stark as Iron Man in high school.... Seriously?

Then we get The Avengers. Stories are decent of course, but the animation or character design is terrible- again too cartoony for my taste- and later the X-MEN animation that appeared on G4TV was too anime-ish for me... SO, I decided to actually do something, instead of sitting about being annoyed. I'm not expecting it to go anywhere, I doubt anyone will listen, but its better to try and fail, than to have never tried and forever wonder what could have been- besides it will be a fun side project for me anyway.

I draw, and have been working on a graphic novel/video game designs. My influences include Jim Lee, Joe Madureira, former SNK artist Shinkiro (famous for Fatal Fury, and King of Fighters), and some of the artist (who are often nameless and faceless) of CAPCOM.

I'm drawing Marvel characters, as if I were designing them for animators. I also don't understand why Marvel doesn't get into using the many great stories of their books. I also feel music and sound- should be done by the team who worked on the Marvel Superheroes/CAPCOM vs Marvel games. I was so amazed by the sound, and soundtrack- it captured the Marvel universe perfectly in my view. I remember first hearing Doctor Doom's track in Marvel Superheroes, and was like "That's Doctor Doom!".

Could you imagine watching an awesome Fantastic 4 series, with better animation/character design, with that music going as they are fighting him! Or the Genosha track of X-MEN Children of the Atom, playing while fighting on the island, or fighting sentinel!? These are the things that popped into my mind when I first heard all of these sounds.

Marvel kills it with the live action movies, I want them to kill it with Animation as well.
