Young Justice: Designing the Costumes

Young Justice: Designing the Costumes

Over at his personal blog, Young Justice executive producer Brandon Vietti has posted an entry in which he discusses the look of the costumes for the members of the team.

"When Greg Weisman and I started developing Young Justice we had a lot of discussions about how we could make another DC superhero show in a way that feels new," Vietti explains. "In both art direction and story a lot of ground has already been thoroughly explored in shows like Justice League, The Brave and the Bold, Teen Titans, Legion of Superheroes, The Batman, and Batman: The Animated Series. We had no desire to disrespect any of those great shows by trying to copy or emulate them. So it was important to us to create something new to establish a unique identity for our series, present familiar material in a new light for our audience, and also to challenge ourselves artistically.

"I think one of the most defining characteristics of our series is realism. Once Greg and I established a realistic tone for the series it was clear that the art style of the show would have to match that tone. I do the majority of the art directing as part of my duties producing the show so the first rule I established during character design development was that it should never appear that any of our heroes shop at the same store for their clothes. Each costume should not only reflect the wearer's personality, physical needs, and traditional DCU look, but also have unique tailoring. Conveying a sense of texture/tailoring variation between costumes would be the mark of realism needed to match the tone of the stories Greg and I want to tell. Hopefully it would also help to visually set our series apart from the other animated DCU TV shows that came before us.

"The two characters that best illustrate a difference in tailoring are Aqualad and Robin . Aqualad's outfit is nearly seamless and shiny to convey a slick and textureless material designed to cut through water fast. Robin, on the other hand, has a costume that's all about seams and padding. When fighting crime on the streets of Gotham it just makes sense to wear protection. Robin's costume seams imply reinforced stitching and sewn in materials designed to protect the body during street fights or even stop a bullet. Unlike other versions of Batman in the animated DCU, our Batman will have the same extra stitching lines on his outfit for all the same reasons that Robin does. The subtle difference between them is that Batman's costume may have the feel of next gen. military gear where as I wanted Robin's outfit to be a little more sport inspired to match his youthful energy. Kid Flash not only runs fast but also uses his momentum to become a human cannonball. His costume needs to be protective against skidding and impacts so I wanted him to have lots of pads and a leathery texture which is indicated by thick folds seen on his outfit."

Yeah Aqualad looks good. He's gonna make a great leader. Plus I like the fresh new take on a young robin and flash. Robin looks good in the Tim Drake type robin costume. Best of the robin costumes even better than Damien's hooded robin suit.

@ Superguy: I don't care about the continuity I just wanted different characters.
We had Teen Titans, Batman & Robin The Animated Series, Batman The Animated Series, The Batman, and all the old shows with Dick Grayson as Robin. We had one show with Tim Drake and it did not last long.
Justice league, Justice League Unlimited, Superman, and The Batman versions were all Wally.

Don't get me wrong I love Grayson and West as characters but I want to see different versions. Only thing about there choice in Wally is Barry Allen is Flash which has not been done in a series in like forever. As for Grayson I just hope they show him as Nightwing down the line.

As for the continuity they chose it raises question cause anyone that knows a damn thing about Earth 16 knows that is the Earth with the The Worlds finest Sons. Which is quite interesting if they introduce them.

Also, all of the character designs in the show were awesome.

@ earzmundo: Why are you glad it rules out Nightwing? IMO it gives more of a possibility of it happening in an episode that takes place in the future as well I hope it does because if not it is all in vein. I Love Nightwing and he gets little t.v/animated time.

@ LEEE: Garth is in the show. This Aquaman take over for him for some reason. He may be tempest in the show and be the villain which would be awesome but Garth is confirmed in the series. Thought you might like to know that.

@Oreos

....But Garth was created in the 60's. So he MUST be cool, and nothing modern or different from the comics can be cool, right? I mean, kids were screaming for Garth and his man-panties to show up!

earzmundo: agreed with the him receiving his own series but as for all the guest appearances you do realize that they have confirmed over 150 other guest DC heroes/villains to appear in the first season alone.

I'm actually more upset that 1) Wondergirl won't be a part of this... for now. and 2) And I'm not happy about Arrowette. The costume sucks major balls. Ever seen the real Arrowette? SEXY! Besides if it's going to be Dick and Wally then where is Speedy?

It's like they took the Teen Titans and Young Justice and sorta threw them into hat then pulled out this show.

The pilot episode was good however and I'm looking foward to seeing more of it. Just not happy with the concepts and continuity.

I agree with earzmundo. Let's keep the JLA's appearances in this new series to a minimum. Those guys had their own show. Let the younger heroes learn from their mistakes (and I want to see them make a few- makes things more interesting) on their own, with a minimum of interference. This show has potential, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of it.

Yep. They said that Aqualad WILL have several episodes where he teams up with Tempest. Don't sweat it Lee!

Bamf7 - 12/6/2010, 4:37 PM
By the way, I am pretty sure we WILL also see Nightwing. The producers said that, unlike other shows, their cast is going to grow up as the show moves on. That means Robin will get older, become Nightwing, and that we may even see (gasp) Jason Todd! You never know, it's like when they rebooted the Star Trek film franchise...the possibilities are endless now!
