Don't stone me for saying this but the talent assembling for Akira is shaping up to be something pretty grand. THR reports that Warner Bros.' adaption of the beloved Japanese anime Akira has narrowed it's search down to two for the role of Tetsuo. In many ways, Tetsuo is the most important role in the movie and could potentially make or break the film. Looking to take on that pressure are actors Ezra Miller (bottom left) and Alden Eherenreich. Variety's Jeff Sneider is reporting that Ezra Miller is the one to put your money on. Many film critics are starting to generate Oscar buzz for Miller for his portrayal of the titular character in We Need To Talk About Kevin. He will next be seen opposite Logan Lerman and Emma Watson in the “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.”

Both actors will read for the role next Tuesday so we could hear something as soon as next week.

Lets see, that's:
-Appian Way's Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson producing
-Katsuhiro Otomo, the manga author and anime director serving as Executive Producer
-Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown and Orphan) directing
-Steve Kloves, screenwriter for Harry Potter franchise and The Amazing Spider-Man wrote the latest draft
-Garrett Hedlund is in talks to portray Kaneda, Helena Bonham Carter was offered the role of Lady Miyako, Keira Knightley has been approached for the role of Kei and Gary Oldman the same for The Colonel.

Yeah, I'd say this is Warner Bros. next tentpole, Dragonball and Chun-Li this is not. Approach this one with an open mind fans, the studio appears to be taking this one seriously.

Akira (アキラ?, stylized as AKIRA) is a 1988 Japanese animated cyberpunk science fiction film directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, written by Otomo and Izo Hashimoto, and starring the voices of Mitsuo Iwata, Nozomu Sasaki, Mami Koyama and Taro Ishida. The screenplay is based on Otomo's manga Akira.

The film depicts a dystopian Neo-Tokyo in 2019. The plot focuses on biker Tetsuo Shima (Nozomu Sasaki) and his psychic powers and the biker gang member Shotaro Kaneda (Mitsuo Iwata), who tries to hunt down Tetsuo from releasing Akira. While most of the character designs and basic settings were adapted from the original 2182-page manga epic, the restructured plot of the movie differs considerably from the print version, pruning much of the last half of the manga. The film became a hugely popular cult film and is widely considered to be a landmark in Japanese animation and film making in general.

I haven't watched the Akira anime yet. The animation look disgusting...but I'll give it a try after exams.

Cant see Keria going for this, although she auditioned for Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises so shes obviously looking for a big budget comic movie. It would be great to have a established cast though, i mean it doesn't get much better than Helena Bonham Carter and Gary Oldman.

ManofKrypton: If you were a true fan you would have Akira tattoed to your chest and own a mock up bike and would dress up as Tetsuo every year for Halloween and Easter, and you would never support a creative vision that may end up being a cinematic equivalant to the cartoon (oops anime) if it has the right people involved. What is wrong with you?

Miller as Tetsuo is pretty inspired, hope he takes the role.

Ceejay, joking of course.

Wards, true fan smuu fan. I'm a huge fan of both the Manga and Anime and I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do with this.

"good God, PLEASE CHANGE THE ENDING. THAT GIANT GLOB MUTANT THING ONE CHARACTER UNEXPECTEDLY TRANSFORMS INTO IS THE STUPIDEST IDEA EVER AND COMPLETELY RUINED THE MOVIE. TOOK IT FROM BEING A 9 STAR MOVIE TO BEING A 4 STAR MOVIE..."

Then you dont understand why he transformed, why #28 came back and why Keneda becomes a changed boy.

@danwgriff & Wards

Nothing is wrong with me.... The thing is some Akira fans are so narrow minded that they think the Manga should be in one art form.... The Manga transcended well into an Anime even though they cut out huge chunks from the Comics/Graphic Novels. Now finally we're getting a live action adaption.... I look at things in a positive light, let's say for instance this turns out to be a big pile of sh!t, which is a good possibility I'll always have the Anime to fall back on that I love so much. My major concern at the moment is the Director they've hired.

And just because the Manga is set in Japan it doesn't mean it HAS to be in Japan with a Japanese cast - you have to remember back then Akira was targetted towards a Japanese audience it was never intended to be made for the West.

This is an american adaptation now.... So let's see how it turns out, if it turns out great then people will be praising it (Rise of the planet of the apes anyone? most people shot that film down way in early production). And if this turns out crap I'll still have the Anime to fall back on... So it's a Win/Win situation for me.

Some people really need to stop whining so much... If you don't like this then don't go to see it simple as that.

@Nephillim - But that doesn't change the fact that him growing into. Bulbouse giant tumor monster was just plain stupid.

Testuo changing into the monster was in the Manga too but it was a different point in the story compared with Animie. I dont seen any reason to change for the live action adaptation.

The cast is shaping up surprisingly well, but I'm having little expectations for this film. I have been let down by previous anime films (Dragonball Evolution, The Last Airbender) and this might be Hollywood's chance to actually make a good film. But I LOVED the anime for Akira as much as I loved the manga. But there were so many changes in the anime that I didn't even care... I have a feeling that I'll end up liking this film.

Thinking about it, Ezra Miller would be perfect for Tetsuo

While I do like the choices, I think Tetsuo should be played by an asian actor.

Tetsuo should be asian. Damn Hollywood and ALWAYS having to have a Caucasian hero. But out to of these two Ezra Miller would be the best pick. At least he looks half asian.

fistofthenorthstar - 11/5/2011, 9:33 AM
Ok, now this has got my attention! although i agree with the rest, the leads should be asian. there are a lot of eligible american asian actors out there. still this looks like the warners aren't [frick]in around anymore. looks like we've got ourselves something, don't know what, but its something.

btw, THANK GOD "Ceejay" ISN'T A CASTING DIRECTOR!! WTF IS W/THAT SHYTTY LIST!? PFFT!!
PaulRom
PaulRom - 11/5/2011, 9:36 AM
I'm actually looking forward to this, though I haven't seen the anime. Hedlund and Knightly are pretty good actors, Oldman's a god and Carter's awesome. That alone makes me look forward to the film.
I also enjoyed Unknown (though it was puzzling at times), so I wish Collet-Serra the best with this.

croniccris
croniccris - 11/5/2011, 9:50 AM
@gunsmith yeah its gonna take SOME kind of effects to pull of those floating rocks.....

and the reason they are not going to be asian is cuz the movie isn't being made in japan its being made in america so hence the white ppl being cast...if you want asians to play the roles well better hope japan comes out with their own live action akira movie

jazzman - 11/5/2011, 10:35 AM
this is getting stupid all this casting call is only white actors. not a Asian, Black, Latino actors are not consider to play the lead roles.

@croniccris

even tho its been made in America they can still cast a Asian-American actor.
Bandrews1
Bandrews1 - 11/5/2011, 10:46 AM
Ok as much as I don't think this should happen, I'm actually starting to warm up to this. The casting choice are just great, and I'm casting my vote on Ezra Miller especially after his performance in We Need to Talk About Kevin. Who knows this actually turn out to be a good movie, but if not we always have the original to look back on.
ManOfKrypton
ManOfKrypton - 11/5/2011, 10:56 AM
People seem to be forgetting that Katsuhiro Otomo (The Writer and Director of Akira) is on board as an Executive Producer for this film, I don't think he wants to see a bastardized version of his Film/Creation.... I think people really need to calm down on here.... Like I said before if this film turns out to be awful we've always got the Anime.
