ANT-MAN AND THE WASP Director Peyton Reed Breaks Down Hope's Awesome Kitchen Fight

Ant-man and the Wasp is filled with multiple fights and creative uses of Pym particles in sequences that involve Evangeline Lilly's Hope van Dyne, aka the Wasp. One particular scene that ended up being a highlight  of the film was Hope suiting up to fight Sonny Burch's goons in a kitchen in order to retrieve an important piece of black market technology to finish building the quantum tunnel.

In an exclusive video interview with Vanity Fair, director Peyton Reed breaks down the kitchen fight and explains how he approached this particular sequence, elaborating on the attention to detail and realism that they tried to convey, and his desire to have the characters and action adhere as much as possible to the laws of physics.

Reed also highlights how it was important to show Evangeline Lilly as much as possible, even in scenes that involved visual effects. Speaking of FX, Reed describes how they seemlessly meshed practical and visual effects and used CGI to enhance particular scenes, such as highlighting the "disco effect" when Hope shrinks or grows.

It seems clear that Reed is a director who takes great pride in his work and strives to honor the source material.

What  do you think about how Peyton Reed approached this particular sequence in Ant-man and the Wasp, and did you enjoy the final version? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual spot below!

This was really cool and I really enjoy when directors do this.

As for the film, watched first Ant-Man again and I defitnelny enjoyed the second more as a whole, but the action set pieces in the first are just so much cooler

Also Peyton Reed isn’t my favorite MCU director, but he is definitely one of the most passionate about the comics and the characters in his films, the heart of these two films especially would lend itself great to a Fantastic Four movie and the more I hear from him the more on board I am

Damn, somewhere Reed sounds a lot like Michael Douglas

When directors talk about the process behind movies, you just really get an idea of how much goes into these movies. It's really dope.
Side note. anyone else thought about this:
The og Avengers was probably a combination of Antman, the wasp, Nick Fury, coulson, Goliath, agent Carter, and captain marvel with Howard stark being the guy in the chair.

@MyCoolYoung - I’ve thought about that and it’d be the perfect opportunity for a prequel if they ever wanted to do one. Or a tie-in comic/novel.

@ArkhamClown - tie in comic would be legit or even if they all reassembled in Avengers 4 with coulson saying to a shocked Stark "I told you that wasn't my first rodeo" or Nick Fury "I told you you weren't the only hero"

Sadly the movie is releasing on the 13th of this month in my country. I've been watching Lost on Netflix (haven't watched it before), and my gosh Evangeline Lilly is a stunning woman.

It was a good opening fight sequence. I would like to see him break down the one in the final act because it was a long one and all over the city.

When you make a video like this you open yourself up to the same level of scrutiny as you are using to explain what you did to make the scene good.

Logical errors;
• Time does not work the way it is supposed to. They CGI edit a guy's arm to imply he will throw three more knives, but based on how fast Wasp turns and the speed and angles of the other knives - it's not physically possible for the guy to have thrown a single knife in that time off-screen.
• By increasing the amount of fire, the practical effect is effectively covered up for most of the shot. In addition the practical effect is on a smaller scale so it makes no sense that a large fire burst would cause such minimal fire damage

Discrepancies;
• 0:46 - Wasp flicks a salt shaker looking over her right shoulder, her arm is down and she is looking up as the salt shaker was flicked upwards. The next shot shows her arm by her side moving upwards to aim at the salt shaker while her head is looking straight and not entirely in the right direction. This seems to be a shot taken from a potential 'threatening' scene where she would have pointed at the criminal to cause him to run
• 1:14 - Upon contact with the salt shaker, the grow disk turns into energy rather than just staying physical as demonstrated in Ant-Man and when used in a similar way in Civil War. It could potentially just be designed differently for weaponized use though.
• 1:38 - In the wide shot of the knife thrower just before we cut away, another guy is very briefly seen right behind him. This guy vanishes completely in all other shots of that scene.
• 4:51 - The thug is looking at the kitchen table holding a mallet prior to Wasp landing, he does not appear to track her movements to realise she would land there as his head never changed direction from the table
• 4:53 - Pointless digital shot of Wasp is used for a simple shot of the character looking upwards with effectively a background that could have been done against greenscreen
• 6:52 to 6:54 - you dont get to really experience any of the shots because you are shown a flurry of perspectives at once (Widescreen, Close-up, POV - repeat) 6 different shots in under 2 seconds
• 8:56 - Wasp lands and skids in what appears to be flour, in the next shot the layout of the flour and size of the surface it is covering is completely different
• 8:58 - Wasp jumps at the guy whose arm is on fire, in the next shot his arm is not on-fire and she knocks him to the floor with it not being on fire
• 11:11 - Idea of showing more size changing is good in theory, but having her size change from one angle then cutting to another with a practical version makes the deception more obvious and you dont get to really see the practical version do the block because of how fast the scene is as shown at 11:30

A lot of these aspects i missed when seeing the clip originally, it is only due to the director slowing it down that i noticed all the issues. In regards to any that are potentially scene breaking the only two i can spot are the guy throwing more knives than physically possible in the timespan and the guy appearing and then disappearing behind the knife thrower.

That kitchen fight was awesome. In fact, all the action scenes in that movie were awesome. I really loved the use of shrinking and growing, it was all really well done. I also liked the phasing effect on Ghost.
